- Jouer à, Jouer de and Faire de are all used to talk about activities, games, sports and musical instruments.
JOUER À translates to To play, we use it for sports and games.
Jouer à cache-cache - To play hide-and-seek (To play "hide-hide" in French)
Jouer au football - To play football
Jouer aux échecs - To play chess
When in English, you don't add "the" after "play", it translates to JOUER À.
JOUER DE translates to To play, we use it for musical instruments.
Jouer de l'harmonica - To play the harmonica
Jouer de la guitare - To play the guitar
Jouer du piano - To play the piano
FAIRE DE translates to To do, we use it for sports and activities. (that you can do by yourself or in small groups)
Faire de l'escalade - To rock climb
Faire de la natation - To swim
Faire du yoga - To do yoga
Some sports such as golf, football, tennis, and basketball can be used with JOUER À and FAIRE DE. It all depends on how you see the sports, is it a sport? Is it a game? Both are fine, you will be understood with each.

Yes you can, faire du piano, faire du violon, faire de la guitare, ... it's a similar way of saying jouer du piano, jouer du violon, etc :)

thank you. I get that you can use jouer and faire for games etc. But I don't get why we can say faire du tennis and faire au tennis? Thought au was just for jouer and au for faire?
We can't say Faire au tennis, only du :) But we use Faire for a lot of things in French and replacing jouer is one of them ;)

Hey, how is the best way to find out which preposition goes with which verb?
If I for example see 'J'en sais rien' I would guess that the preposition of savoir is de, but when i search savoir de on google there are no results 🤔
Savoir doesn't have one. You should remember the verbs that you use the most, that's the only way :/

Interesting. According to this video, then there really isn't much point in learning the difference between "faire de" & jouer à" as they are pretty much interchangeable...
It depends what type of sport and instrument. Mostly the one I listed at the end of the video :)

HI MieMie, to get a CLB4 you should be between a level B2 and C1. This test is very broad and includes reading, speaking, listening and writing. What is your level right now ?
