this is sick. im often too lazy to do the few extra steps if i only have a few minutes of free time to jump in vr and end up playing a quest game instead

You need proper wifi5/6(e) tho in the same room as ur headset. And pc needs to be tethered to ur main modem. At leqst thats what works for me
There is a easier fix for the sound, go to the audio settings on Steam VR in the headset and turn the audio to Headset, a lot of people would have this on Manual

I have so many devices with speakers connected to my PC (5 or 6?), directly or indirectly, I just naturally switch to what I happen to be using manually.
It should be fixed in SteamVR Beta. Opt-in and give it a shot.

@@FIREFREAKPROS Yeah definitely, some people do that, but it needs to be a fairly powerful laptop with a good GPU. I haven't looked into gaming laptop prices in a while but I think building a PC will give you better performance at a lower price. You'll have to decide if a laptop is worth it for what you want/ need.
Can get same loading times if you use Oculus-VR-Dash-Manager
. It basically kills Oculus Dash so it loads straight into SteamVR without the overhead. Works very well. I find the Steam Link is too buggy at the moment. Look forward to the future with it tho.
Quest 3 quickly becoming the clear choice. Xbox game pass will be cool as well. I only wish Xbox would fully go into VR and team with Meta where we can plug into console and play VR updated games like starfield!

This was my observation on steam link: For me at least, it worked better than air link or virtual desktop on the quest 3 (virtual desktop pretty much always worked reliably on quest 2, air link was hit and miss, but cable/rift mode always worked). What really surprised me though was: I was resigned to having to do an upgrade to wifi 6e to get decent wireless performance. From what I've seen so far with steam link, I probably don't need to bother with the upgrade. Interestingly I notice you initialise dead centre in the steam grid, that never happened with airlink. It didn't work properly with Polybius and I haven't tried Skyrim yet, but its looking pretty cool otherwise.
That dead center somehow managed to pass permanently onto my Quest 3 even after I disconnected from my PC.

If not then it's just a steam alternative to airlink. - Hooray another app and another update.
It will be a long time before it approaches the level of polish that Virtual Desktop has. That audio issue is something Virtual Desktop fixed years ago. Airlink still has it. I have manually change audio source in Airlink every time. Virtual Desktop is the GOAT. Worth the price paid many times over.

WHY? Because it just takes 2 clicks to play a game. It's like playing a game NATIVE on the Quest. That's sick and I love that!
I was always bothered by how many extra steps it took me to get to my games on PC via Airlink or Virtual Desktop..
It's also smooth, looks perfect, and will be tweaked by Valve with their awesome developers in no time. They will also fix the audio bug real quick, as usual. (I don't have the bug btw).
Oh, and it's 100% free ;)

@@mikeh.4503 i find virtual desktop to be far more stable than air link AND steam link combined... literally the only thing that would DARE connect to my crappy mini pc and RUN smooth to boot... and it played VR minecraft at between 19-25 FPS... with all the instability going on? it kept it's connection no matter what... meanwhile Steam Link refused to connect and air link is a buggy mess... though i suppose you get what you get with free... don't really got the right to complain much.
@@mikeh.4503 Saying Steam Link is far superior just cause its slightly faster to get into a game is ridiculous. Virtual Desktops performance, as of now, is much better.
@mikeh.4503 how's that peripheral blurry mess is treating you? Completely messed up my Quest 3. VD never had that problem at all. Launched the game through Steam and unless I directly stared into the center of the Q3, everything else around was blurred out worse than the disco acid trip.
I've used Virtual Desktop since the quest 1 days. It's great.
Curious to try steamvr but at least the option to do either is there, since I've owned it for 5 years or so.
I am more curious to see if there's a performance boost using steamvr.
It seems that many people prefer to use Quest system for pcvr because of the lack of wires. Is the quality difference between pcvr through Valve Index much better than Quest3 to make it worth dealing with wires? Input from someone who has tried both would be helpful.
I can't say for valve index I know it requires wires and it also requires the sensors like the oculus c1 the quest 3 is okay with great res and field of view but there battery sucks so bad I mean really bad if that helps make the decision I personally sending my quest 3 back and keeping to the quest 2 which is just as good as battery is much much better try looking up valve index reviews 2023 maybe that will help but my personal advice is keep to wireless get a battery pack or something and play that way it be 5x the immersion
I didn’t hear about this! Just tried it for an hour and it seemed to work great for me. I’ve never tried VD but this worked better than my typical airlink set up for sure.
But Steam Link is not usable for a really good experience. I've got very good 5ghz Wifi and still I have lags, bad sound, more pixels than a real picture etc...
I wonder but would it work with the steam deck? You use your steam deck to air link to the meta quest

Considering Steam Deck is meant to run games between 30-60fps, I couldn’t imagine it being a very good experience.
We’re so close to standalone VR at PCVR level performance, and when that happens at an affordable price, VR is going to get crazy.

The loading took about 25 seconds until you could do anything and loading finished... Not 19 seconds. Still fast though.
You can technically launch a game before the home has loaded which is why I stopped it at that point. I just wanted to show the home first. That's how I always launch Steam games instead of waiting for the home because I'm impatient lol
A lot depends on what drive you have (m.2, ssd etc) and sufficient ram.
I wish meta would update the rift software its been the same since 2018. They even got rid of oculus home and still didn't upgrade the rift software.

Tell me about it. If you don’t have a super new computer or hardcore gaming computer, you simply cannot use Steam. I have no freakin pc as it’s the year 2024. I do everything on my phone or tablet. I haven’t had a need for a pc in like 6 years.
After the pc and headset are connected, do you have to have the game installed in your library or can you have it so it only installs on your headset? For example, I'm wanting to only have my vr games installed on my headset and my pc games only installed on my pc, is this a thing that can happen?

A fantastic move by steam gives us all more flexibility to access our games on VR, ONE small thing that would be REALLY fantastic is to link Quest 3 to a SteamDeck do you think that is in the pipeline? I do hope so. Either way this is a step in the right direction - Well done Steam and Meta

Not necessarily. If you have been fine so far with your standalone VR experience, then you are sorted. This feature is for those who already have a PC with an existing Steam library. It's a first-party alternative to Virtual Desktop and Air Link. So definitely don't feel the FOMO about it.

@@greatestytcommentator I use a gaming laptop to play it and it runs fine. Only occasional resolution and frame drops, but this can be more because of my router not being a dedicated one.

Ok. So questions. Are you recording the footage on the quest? Or on your PC? I have not been able to use the quest 3 for steam content creation due to the native airlink being so laggy, and when I use Virtual desktop I have to use the steam vr view to screen record, but when using a q3 the steam vr view is only the bottom half of the screen, so it has pretty much been impossible to make viable content with... if this resolves those issues, I will be stoked.
He said in the video he was recording natively on the Quest. Also, with Virtual Desktop, you can record natively on the Quest instead of needing to use OBS to capture the VR View, etc.
It doesn’t work out of the box if your computer which in my case is upstairs is locked. I can’t think of a way round it apart from going upstairs which seems pointless. Virtual desktop and matters system don’t have a similar problem. I’ll be sticking with virtual desktop.
The oculus pc app really needs some tlc. Like there are apps I can't even install anymore. Ones from prior to 2017 most I can't install at all. I've been going back on to some older titles since now I can play them in higher resolution, higher graphics settings and without having to troubleshoot stuff all the time.

I don’t the startup. I can jump into vd faster than that launched. The stuff you criticized was initial setup. Vd starts up faster than this. But I’ll try steam and see.

My biggest issue with air link (other than being limited to 90Hz) is that every time I open my desktop my computer absolutely can’t run it. It chugs so bad. Playing games is completely fine but once I open my desktop it basically crashes. Had the exact same issue with steam link. Virtual desktop does not have this issue and I can use my desktop as well as play my flat screen games in VR.
After I put in the code it didn't do anything. I'm just in the meta environment

I did extensive testing on link and VD and airline and link was worse followed by air link which sucked and VD which is good but can be complicated if you're stupid....

The very first time I used Steam Link a few days ago, it worked flawlessly. Last night, it tells me it’s not compatible because my desktop is connected to the router wirelessly. How I had a virtually perfect experience the first time and not the other? Any thoughts?

While I'm glad there's another alternative for people, you're exaggerating some of the "differences," lol... Virtual Desktop is also fast. The speed of getting going is not a bottleneck with either Virtual Desktop or Air Link IMO: with Air Link, once you've launched a game, it shows in your library in Oculus Dash. Even if you've never launched it before, you just navigate to Steam and press 'play' on the game. It then auto-launches SteamVR and you're in (and then next time you have a shortcut straight to it). With Virtual Desktop, it's even easier. You just use the Virtual Desktop "Games" tab to launch the game (and it picks up both Oculus and Steam games) and voila! the game launches with SteamVR. No need to open SteamVR first.
Regarding the audio sources issue, you don't actually have to manually go to your desktop and switch sources. You can do it from the SteamVR menu: there's a section for Steam Link, and in that section there's an audio setting for turning "mirroring" on and off. Just toggle that button and it fixes the audio. But. As you said, it doesn't switch the audio source back when you quit. Virtual Desktop does, plus gives you more options for audio settings. ;)
Outside of that, nice video and thanks for sharing it. Have you dived into the settings for the app yet? Given that some people are complaining of issues with Steam Link, I've wondered if it comes from changing the settings too much.
I disagree with many of these points. Sure VD takes longer to setup, but it takes two clicks to get into Steam Home (one to launch VD and another to click Launch SteamVR) secondly VD automatically scans Oculus and SteamVR library so no game is less than 2 clicks away. Thirdly Oculus Link/Air and Virtual Desktop support various reprojections which Steam Link doesn't which is a must for titles like MSFS and finally, and this is a massive issue for Quest 3 owners, there is no way to remove the super aggressive fixed foveated rendering you get with Steam Link. I'm amazed every RUclipsr seems to be brainwashed with this crap and haven't reviewed this subjectively. Some titles unless you go into Steam Link first, you can't then load Steam Link after the title has loaded. Steam Link needs work, especially if you intend to use a Quest 3 and have a beautiful clear vision like you can achieve with Oculus and Virtual Desktop streams.
