Virtual Desktop was just too troublesome for me, i always had issues with it and SteamVR, they just didnt like each other. Steam Link worked perfectly for me first time and i couldnt believe it, back to PCVR games that i had left in my library for over a year now, will finally get to play them with Quest 3 and Steam Link.

      Really? ,
I've had no issues with Virtual Desktop and Steam for PC VR with my Quest 2. It's miles ahead of quest Airlink even better than corded. Not sure how he does it, but I love VirDir!

@@chrisl8292 im not sure what the issue was but this was about a year ago when i last tried it a few times and it had issues so put me off using it again. Issues was only with SteamVR though, Rift store games worked no problem if i remember, it could be because i had multiple headsets connected like htc vive, rift s and quest 2. I guess the issue could have been SteamVR instead of VD! But when i tried steamlink it worked first time which was a big relief for me :D although i dont have the other headsets connected now, and steamVR was easily able to find my headset and controllers and just work to play half life alyx

Hard to know. When I first got my quest 2 I remember spending hours upon hours experimenting with all kinds of setup and config changes. Eventually settling in on VirDir. The diagnostic popup option you can enable to see real-time fps and other metrics was hugely beneficial. I know you can also download those to use with Steam VR...
So, if I were to guess on your VirDir issue, I suspect the issue may be which driver is given priority. The oculus or steam VR driver. Towards end of this video he referenced a steam VR setting where he switched from oculus to steam. I think in my case, mine may also be set to oculus driver. I believe that means one less layer to go through like oculus thru steam to game. Versus just oculus to game. Sorry I have zero detail on this, it's been 2+ yrs now I think since I last dug around.

IIUC, if you want to have a stable USB wired connection, then Quest Link from Meta (not Air Link or Steam Link from Valve) is the only option available. That probably should've been mentioned in the video when discussing alternatives. I think there's still a ton of people who don't have a good setup to go wireless in a stable fashion. Needs too much debugging of the "air waves" in some homes. And if you're playing a sim game where you're mostly just sitting in a chair next to your PC, then the wire isn't a huge problem.

It runs butter smooth with my quest 2 and RTX 2080 and produces a more cleaner image with less color banding and codec artefacts at identical data rates. I also think that it has a bit less input lag. I'm very impressed of valves good work!

tabletop sims vr implimentation is not that great, would recommend not bothering with it.
also as for "finally being able to access steamvr games for free" there were already options to do that, search up "meta quest link".
they provide both a wired and wireless option to play games from your pc.
a wired connection will be more stable and have less latency, though you will need a decent cable to do so, both in quality and length.
you can also use "oculus killer" to get rid of the oculus dashboard and go right into steamvr instead, this is currently what im doing.

I haven't used my Quest 2 outside of native games in a little while, because I am primarily a Linux user. The announcement from Valve that they dropped the Link app for the quest was very exciting, but mostly because I hope they are able to launch Linux support sooner than later. I have tried getting ALVR to work, but it has been spotty for me, and I have had issues with audio in the past. It is cool and a good step forward, but I am hoping Valve can get Linux VR with the quest to a good point soon, then I don't have to keep my Windows partition around any longer. I haven't used it is so long as it was, and the only reason I booted it up was to try Half-Life Alyx that I just bought on the recent Steam Sale, and even then, I had started working on getting ALVR to work on Linux so I could try it that way. It was very convenient, and I don't have a newer headset with the newer features, so it was fine for me. It worked, gameplay was smooth, sound was good, I didn't have any complaints on my launch day Quest 2.

    2:27 "Foveated Encoding"
Not sure if I just need to crank my bandwidth but SteamVR through Steam Link is blurry in the central focus area at the default 1088, when I turn the number DOWN then the image becomes much more CLEAR (bandwidth set to 100mbps). At 512 the peripheral blur is very noticeable but at 768 I can't tell it's there in games, that setting only bothers me when looking at menus.
Crazy thing is the "Virtual Desktop" app looks fine at 40mbps (less than half the bitrate), which would indicate people with slow wi-fi would be better served using Virtual Desktop than Steam Link.

in steam link when you open up Steamvr, obviosly it doesnt show base stations if you do have them,
I have a valve index, i wanted to try out wireless full body and i seen the post for steam link and i thoguht, Oh.. maybe its time to try, some time later i got steam link, i was amazed on how easy the set up for it is for quest 2 pretty much just click and play, but i noticed i couldnt get the base stations to come up,
but you can, when you click the button to change channels on a base station it actually comes on, and it came up on the steam vr window thingy whilst im using the quest, you still need the space calibrator to get that part set up ofc, but yeah, if you wanna be able to do full body with a quest 2 on steam link it is,
    Open steam link
change the channels to force your base stations to become fully on, hopefully it will show them in your steam vr like it did for me
get space calibrator, in space calibration you need to click on right controller, do a figure 8 while holding a tracker, only turn on 1 while doing this,
and you should be set to go, you can also use your index controllers i noticed,
so if you are also a valve index/ any headset that has lighthouses, try what i said and you will have a great time, the quality quest 2 is a bit janky but that might be based on wifi? im not sure but hopefully everyone else has a better time when it comes to visuals

If Valve can release a headset significantly better than Quest 3 then I will definitely buy one.
Meta has some great standalone games but I really wish the screens were better, both in resolution and contrast.

I would say currently, Quest 2. It's cheaper and has a huge user base, so lots of support and is still being sold alongside Quest 3. If you had apps on Oculus Go, I believe you can actually access those on Quest 2 with the same account. I got access to my Samsung Gear VR apps on Q2 this way.
