Roxy Music has a discernible musical progression over the course of their career: they started as a sort of proto-glam experimental outfit (hell, one of their original members is Brian Eno who went on to work with Bowie (among many others) and invented ambient music), then moved into a campy dance outfit (as in this song) and then moved to a sophisticated but quirky soul sound on their last two albums. Amazingly, they had commercial success, in England at least, in all these phases.
Along with this musical development, Brian Ferry from a stance of ironic detachment to one of deep sincerity. This is best heard in their final album, "Avalon". While the title song would meet your criteria nicely, I would recommend checking out "More Than This". It has one of the most exquisite moments in pop: in the chorus Ferry sings, "More than this, you know there's nothing. More than this, tell me one thing.." and he sings those last four words just slightly behind the beat as if the notion that anything could ever be more than this is just absurd. It's not just great singing; it's great communicating. The song, which has been shimmering and sultry throughout, effortless morphs into a deep, chugging groove during the extended outro. It's a gem that will shine brightly for you.

Big radio hit in the mid-70s.
This band was co-founded with Brian Eno. Rather than play any instruments, Eno processed guitars, keyboards and voices through what looked like a desktop spaceship. He stayed for only two albums but his former bandmates continued to record and perform live with him (except Ferry).
Eno is probably the single most influential person in modern music since 1972. Not exaggerating.

This album, Stranded and Country Life are all great, and their first album has its moments. Don't be fooled by the suaveness of this and later stuff, they could rock. Thanks for uploading.

Good reaction to a very cool song. 'Siren' was my first Roxy Music album. That's Jerry Hall on the cover.
In '74 they were on tour and coming to Milwaukee. I sent in for tickets, but it came back with "Not In This Zip Code" stamped on it. Damn! So I didn't see them until 2001. But what a show!
Ya wanna go a little deeper? Maybe "Mother Of Pearl" would work for you. It's almost two different songs. Very fun. If ya wanna get a little darker, how about a love song to a rubber blowup doll, "In Every Dream Home A Heartache"? Very creepy organ with an almost rave up ending.
So glad to see Roxy Music getting a little love on a reaction channel.

One of my favorite bands. This was the first Roxy tune to grab the US radio waves consistently. I'm thankful for it because it opened up the rest of their music to me. I saw them on their Manifesto and Avalon tours. Funny how bass was always prominent in Roxy . After the first album there were only session and touring bass players in the band. John Gustafson was a brilliant player in the studio for them (among others). Even John Wetton toured with them after the first era of King Crimson ended. I always say that Roxy Music bass players ,as one , are my favorites.

I recommend several songs that are maybe more interesting than Love Is The Drug... Out Of The Blue, In Every Dream Home A Heartache, Both Ends Burning, Editions Of You, A Really Good Time, and my absolute favorite, the live version of If There Is Something on their Viva! live album. This was Roxy's biggest single in UK until Jealous Guy -and 1975- when you could only buy singles in vynal which was at its height that it is saying something so expect they made money. Releases off Avalon must have been big but by that time I think singles buying may have been on the wain?

Roxy Music had three constants in Ferry, Manzanera, and Mackay, (Voice+Piano, Guitar, and Sax+Oboe), but always managed to have great sounding drums and bass players. I tend to think of guitar players as either melodic, rhythmic, or textural, and there's hardly a better textural guitar player than Phil Manzanera, though he's not in the forefront of this song. They were one of the few pre-punk er bands a lot of the punks liked. They had to be a big influence on the early Psychedelic Furs. I'm sure were also a big influence on British pop in the 80's; I can't imagine Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, or even Wham being the same without them.
It's funny that you asked for something somber from them, because I can't think of any song that's more somber than "A Song for Europe".

The band was the launching point for Brian Eno as well. Jamiroquai has done a live cover on this song.

The song was released at the height of the disco era so I'm sure that it was aimed at that market as well...

Love this song. I would also suggest "Take a Chance With Me" and "Same Old Scene".

I do love this song! More somber sounds in the 3rd album Stranded - A Song for Europe. I really loved their move into the sophisti-pop sound on the Flesh and Blood album that solidified in the following Avalon album. LOVE the cool, atmospheric groove of that whole album, especially Avalon, The Space Between and More than This.

Nice review & as always, a good encapsulation of the song's positive attributes. My man, you have "the knack" for this stuff, the reviews- I truly look forward to yer insight. Surely you do not see yourself in that light...and I may not be the only one who regards you this way. You have my respect-so much so- that I try to write with proper punctuation. See that statement for what it is, please.
What is behind that 'statement' exactly ? A testament to the quality of your reaction videos, the ones lucky enough to click on your video for the 1st time, your subscribers and so on...
And I say all of the above with true sincerity.
Unfortunately, you can't take that to make a deposit or cash it in. But you very much are enjoyed by Craig & Jody in Milford, Delaware.
You have recently received an email from me, at least I hoped you'd received it. Feel free to write for whatever reason ! We are 3 miles away from the Delaware Bay & a half hour away from the Delaware beaches. If ever up this way, be in touch and you'd certainly have a place to stay. Wife, kids (??) too !!
There it is but for one last thing....the requestamenté (that's fake/made up Spanish)😎
The request for your reaction video is Yours Is No Disgrace by Yes.
This song is sooooo worthwhile to your years- to anyone's ears, actually.
That song really covers much of what Yes is all about. It's one of the few songs that's writing was credited to the whole band. Yay, Kaye & Bruford !! 😎
There are several movements within the song & Steve Howe's input is amazing. It is a helluva way to start The Yes Album. (Geddy Lee has said in several interviews that The Yes Album is his favorite album).
While the whole album deserves such praise, Yours Is No Disgrace is flat-out amazing !!
I can already see you smiling & nodding approval during the reaction vid already.....
It will be a guaranteed revelation to you, my friend !! Kinda like this: 🐣
So, take this comment in the spirit it was intended & please consider that tune for future consideration, please. Peace out, JP !! 👊😇

This is a concept album. So many great songs, but they sound best when listened to back to back. Also try Out of the Blue from Country Life.

Roxy Music is a band I didn’t find until my thirties....and I was / am hooked!
    Check out “For Your Pleasure”
“In Every Dream Home A Heartache “, “Out Of the Blue”, “Editions Of You”.
Thanks for starting Roxy Music. They were one most underrated bands in the US in the 70’s.

Yes, this was a radio song.
I'm glad to see you enjoying Supertramp. I never paid too much attention if the songs told a story but let me give you a heads up. Hide in your shell is a crescendo song, try to hear that one after you heard most of the album. Lamb lies down on Broadway has a crescendo song too. That's all.

Avalon, More Than This, Slave to Love, Valentine, all great songs by RM or Bryan Ferry. PS: if you end up reviewing The Magician’s Birthday by Uriah Heep, you’ll get to hear a kazoo solo! KAZOO! In a rock song; how awesome is that?!!!

Love Roxy Music. I consider "Siren" a good album but not as good as the albums that came before it. For me, the best album is "Country Life" followed by "Stranded" and "For Your Pleasure". FYP is with Eno and the most experimental.
After the break in the mid '70s the last 3 albums are uneven but "Avalon" is a sonic and romantic masterpiece. Very different from early Roxy Music.
Try "The Thrill of It All", "The Bogus Man", and "A Song For Europe".

As you hear, the music is there to support Bryan Ferry’s voice. Roxy Music’s album you put on when you sat down for a beer with you friends, maybe played cards, maybe you took the cassette in the recorder, rolled down the windows and cruiised with your friends in your car to somewhere. They are a 4 min hit song band. Avalon from the 80.s is great, still a hit song for that period of time

By this point, a group of really talented, innovative musicians was well on the way to becoming the Bryan Ferry Backing Band. I agree with all the suggestions from the first two albums and would add The Bogus Man, from 'For Your Pleasure' (sombre, but funky as hell).

In Every Dream Home A Heartache............
Roxy Music(or more so Bryan Ferry) were a big influence (at least in the way they dressed) on Duran Duran.

If you want lyrical depth, there's no better choice in my mind than "Mother of Pearl".
"In every dream home a heartache" is also great lyrically and definitely more somber.
"If there is something" and "2HB" are also more akin to what you seem to be looking for.
