All of you, the children of the 80s. You who, like me, experienced an extraordinary era. Remember this explosion of music, this carefreeness.. Never again will we experience this, but it remains alive in us... It's our heritage...

I was born in 1966 and feel lucky to be a teenager in the 80's. Carefree years, great music, I could go on. I'm 58 years old now and I no longer fit into this world and neither do I want to. It's changed and not for the better. Homesick for what once existed but will never return and now looking forward to going home whenever it's my time to depart from his earth. I feel sad and worried for today's children and future generations. Their freedom is being stolen and they will surely have a fight on their hands to reclaim it.

I was born in 1982 and am now 42 years old, but I feel that what you're saying is very true. Although I only experienced a few years of the 1980s as a child, the music and the atmosphere of that era were undoubtedly wonderful. Despite having little firsthand experience of it, the 1980s continue to be an object of admiration for me to this day.

Actually I think the 80s was one of the less creative decades Roxy Music was cool in there way and this video proves how very 80s they were. However I could go through a string of bands from the 60s will say the Sonic's and Stooges on one end to say Jefferson Airplane. And the first jam band the 70s gave us everything from Black Flag tell Linda Ronstadt the 90s had the popularization of punk. With everything from Alanis Morissette to Nirvana and mudhoney. The 2000s kind of sucked but you get the highly overrated but influential White Stripes. Is The Strokes in The Killers. I'm just scratching the surface of each decade to show that it has more to do with Nostalgia and where you may have been when you heard a certain song then one decade being necessarily more important to the than the other. Not my favorite Brian Eno project but definitely set the tone for a lot of what came in the 80s .

    • @tanginicholls207

Same age as you Brother... In my opinion the 80s was a sublime decade... every teenager should have a wonderful story to tell their Children and Grandchildren about growing up in their time, if I had a chance to travel back in time , it'll be to the 80s most definitely.

But for some reason I'm reminded of the calls and songs that various birds make. And if that was the intent, to go with the falcon-themed visuals of the video, Yanik Etienne has added depth and dimension to the song in a way that is both otherworldly and shows her gifts for vocal range and ability to sustain it for as long as she did. When Roxy Music plays Avalon, no backup singer can match what she has done for this song. This version of Avalon remains definitive and canon.

This song came on the radio when I was driving to the funeral of an 18 year old named Mark, he was reckless, like myself and of similar age. I couldn’t get it out of my head, that it could’ve been me in that coffin. I have continued to be reckless for the past 42 years, touch wood, with no serious consequences . I believe that Mark is somehow living his life through me. When I hear Avalon it makes me melancholy, but reminds me to live life to the fullest and don’t worry about petty things.

I remember running, literally, to the record store the day that Avalon was released. I ran upstairs, pulled the paper sleeve out of the cover and while studying the front cover artwork I remember dropping the stylus onto the fresh clean vinyl and hearing "more than this" erupting in my bedroom... I can still remember sitting on the edge of my bed transfixed by the beauty, the perfection and the ambiance they had created... the perfectly produced and arranged audio honey coming from my wharfedales and when it got to track three, Avalon I was in heaven
There are only a handful of albums I can sit all the way through and then play again immediately front to back... This is one of them

One of the most beautiful songs ever. Saw the Avalon tour in 1983 Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto. I have seen many concerts in my life, but that show was simply just the best. I remember Bryan singing this song that night like it was yesterday. The back up singers in blue and green shimmering dresses sparkling in the lights. Magical, beyond words....

It's basically 80s synthpop, being the sub-genre of New Romantics. Also see "(Feels like) Heaven" by Fiction Factory, "Maid of Orleans" by OMD, "Vienna" by Ultravox, "Voyage, voyage" by Desireless, "Ashes to Ashes" by David Bowie, "Forever young" by Alphaville, "The Great Commandment" by Camouflage, and "Fade to grey" by Visage, which are all New Romantics songs.

Roxy Music had a lot of cool songs, but this one is hauntingly beautiful and stands the test of time. The long fade-out is superb... the lilting female vocal in the left channel and the sweet saxophone in the right channel almost in a duel and feeding off each other.

From what Bryan said, they were finishing recording in New York with Rhett Davies, and Ferry heard a girl singing in the corridor.
The girl was Yannick Etienne from Haiti, and he was so impressed he asked her to sing the final part without the band knowing about it.
Turned out pretty good I think.

My mom was/is a hair stylist. She used to do this dudes hair named Lance. He was a big burly construction worker. Heavy drinker, but an absolute bro till the end. Our families became friends, and my younger sister, Avalon, and i would go over and play with his kids. One time, we came over, and he had Roxy Music greatest hits on CD. He said my sisters name always remind him of this song. Circa early 2000s. Evertime i hear this jam it reminds me of my childhood. What a trip music is.
