@@f.w.2054I think Lennon gave the original track a (slightly gritty, in the sense of musically imperfect) emotional authenticity and Nicky Hopkins' incomparable piano gave it soul. Bryan Ferry has a stronger voice than John Lennon, but I think John’s version is better, I think it’s the piano, it makes it more emotional, I don’t cry at ferry’s version, but John Lennon’s is really sad X
I heared that song the first time in 1981 as a young man of 28. It became instantly one of my favourate songs and I'm happy listening to it here again.
I think you said it better than anyone else has (in this comment section). The original was already a beautiful, heartfelt song. A man baring his soul and confessing his sins… but Roxy Music just took it to a whole other level, and built (respectfully) upon the foundation presented in the original to an elegant, emotional masterpiece. This goes well beyond being merely a “cover”. This is one of the greatest tributes of all time, wrought with raw emotion and beautiful musicianship and production. Your summation is much more accurate than everything else I’ve read here.
No real doubt about it in my mind. As a huge Lennon fan even I know this is really Bryan Ferry's song, he just took ownership of it because he can sing it as it deserves to be sung.
I'm crying when I write this my dad loved Bryan ferry and roxy music, I was lucky enough to take him in 2,012 to Newcastle arena to watch your set he was gone 8 months after that, the smile on his face was worth every minute thank you for an amazing show I've still got all his roxy music on tape, that day was the last time me my dad and sister were together it was her birthday on the 1st of October it's ran into the 2nd your show was the last time we were together we have never spoken since he died. It unreal the you must get anyway thanks for the Newcastle arena what a show it was
This is ridiculous! John Lennon made this. So don't even think about that you might like this song! J-J-Just don't listen to Roxy music bullshit *John Lennon* yeah *John* freaking *Lennon* wrote this masterpiece goddess gracious!!
That synth music that was everywhere in the early 1980s, from Bowie, Roxy Music and Duran Duran - you just can't beat it and much kudos to anyone that lived thru it first hand like me. So many great memories.
One of those rare moments that a cover is better than the original by some margin. Everything about this is perfect. It's one that really pulls on the heart, you can literally feel the pain and regrets through Brian's vocals as if he'd written this himself. A masterpiece.
To make a cover for John Lennon tune, it takes a daring courage and a most serious talent. Bryan has achieved in this timeless classic something incredible, a better cover version than the original. I always argued, Bryan and Roxy Music are a category on their own, as one of the finest, most gifted and greatest bands of all time. I would suggest that there should be a museum dedicated to them, somewhere in central London, with all the memorabilia, style and elegance. A true national treasure. Avalon with Flesh and Blood albums could feel like bathing in organic milk and manuka honey, with sips of Dom Perignon, say 1947....
Why does it take courage from Bryan ferry hes a better singer than lennon ever was ferry added his own style to jealous guy and got it dead on lennon again couldn't do that because he didn't have the foresight or intelligence he wrote the song but couldn't do it justice like ferry did so what is thing about courage seriously
I was lucky enough to see Brian Ferry at a very small live concert in Germany, I’d say less than 1,000 people, with giant earthen owls eminating a scented smoke that, by it’s sweet odor, reminded me of something we used to “fly away” from our daily worries... It was a magic concert... stage catwalking straight into the crowd, Brian close enough to touch him, vibrating with a magical charisma that one would be unable to find these days in any of the so-called “stars”... That concert was pure magic, and I thank the lord on my knees that I was at the right place at the right time back then. My one man web design company that propelled me from the bottom to the top here in Thailand innthe late 90s was called Avalon, that should say it all. I love Roxy Music and Brian Ferry to bits. It was a magic time (80s and 90s)... A time that one can only dream of nowadays, where a socialist elite tries to strangle us all to death. My strength to overcome all this is the music of the 80s and 90s. Love to all you Roxy Music fans out there. ❤️☀️🇹🇭🏖🌴🥥🐘🌈
Nobody can deny the impact and importance of JL and of course the Beatles, but this has to be the best cover of all time, and absolutely shows Bryan is up there with the absolute legends and pioneers of rock/pop and not forgetting an icon of popular culture! BF "Legend"
Great song, but want to say a word for the video direction as it's as exquisite as the song itself. The slow panning, the mirrored image at the start, the cut from a close-up to an even closer up, the focus on a single band member at one time and the way the camera lingers on the sax player after his part. And Bryan Ferry looking, as he does, both deranged and yet unquestionably cool, in his pastille linen suit with eyes that could seduce millions into bed, whilst simultaneously snarling to the camera and singing about being a bit of a bastard. Utter utter utter brilliance.
Absolutely brilliant comment ... Bryan really is deranged, cool, seductive and a b😂Start snarling at the camera. I can't take me eyes off him even now after all these years. Thanks for nailing it!
Man Ferry nails the shit out of it, especially the whistle solo. Not to mention Manzanera and Mckay putting out a serious 80s vibe. What a bunch of real 80s men about town, not to mention their earlier gems. You dont pull off class like this unless you were in a shooting war with Bowie in the 70s and the rooskies
One of the finest songs ever written, and of course written by one of the finest songwriters in history the amazing John Lennon. Fantastic tribute to him by Brian Ferry.
Wow another classic that Roxy Music covered and improved - takes me straight back to my youth. How beautiful was he? Dark black hair and blue eyes - what a combo.. Effortlessly classy, stand out music, beautiful man with a unique voice and tons of style. I loved being a teenager/young woman in the 70/80's - we were spoiled for music.
How ultra-cool was Bryan Ferry! Handsome and cool. The video is timeless. Beautiful lush melody amidst horrible background tragedy. I love the strings at 3.50
I don't know why, but that final scene, with the sun rising behind the mountains, along with the whistling and the synthesizer, it all gives me a nice sense of hope. 🙏
Through the course of our lives, every one of us hears an inordinate number of songs. There are those we've forgotten about, those that were mediocre to say the least. those we thought were OK, those we thought were great, and those we thought were nothing short of amazing. And once in a while there's a track we will never ever forget because it/was FAR beyond that last category of "nothing short of amazing". I'm way more than halfway through my life (I won't make it to 102, that's without question!) and amongst the handful of tracks from my 51 years on earth I can place in that "elite" category proudly stands this sheer stunner.... Yeah, normally I hate when people whistle in a song, but Bryan gets a pass. It works beautifully here.
This will always be my favourite Roxy music son, Bryan is as is indeed the whole band classy, best dressed and frankly talented unlike so much current cr#p.
I mean look at those suites
One of the most exquisite synth solos of all time. So so good.
Yeah, I love string-synth. This is right up there with Love Will Tear Us Apart, I think.
What synth did he use? A Solina maybe, or probably Synclavier? cheers
@@patkelly8309 A Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 to be exact.
that last keyboard solo gives War On Drugs vibes
@@DanielThureskog Makes sense that it was the Prophet. That was one of the first widely used synthesizers. It was also used by Phil Collins around this time on In the Air Tonight.
Roxy Music were always a classy act. Thier influence on the groups in the 80s was obvious
If anyone has ever nailed a song it's this guy!
Sometimes I like the original and Bryan's covers equally. This is one. I can imagine Bryan singing that to me.
My dad's tune,, RIP 💙💙💙 I miss u so much, hope your dancing in heaven 2 this song ! See u when I get there dad 💙💙🕊 xx
My dads song too ❤

One of the best covers of all time and a fitting tribute to the genius that was John Lennon.
JOHN LENNON WAS / IS GOD
Roxy Music reached some kinda divine musical peak with this song that not even Lennon reached.
Bryan Ferry has a stronger voice than John Lennon, but I think John’s version is better, I think it’s the piano, it makes it more emotional, I don’t cry at ferry’s version, but John Lennon’s is really sad X
Lennon didn't have the sexy look
I heared that song the first time in 1981 as a young man of 28. It became instantly one of my favourate songs and I'm happy listening to it here again.
a true musical masterpiece in so many ways
Lennon wrote this ..Roxy perfected it.
The end with the synth, the guitar lick &
Bryan whistling...it doesn't get any better.
Love this song ❤❤❤
I think you said it better than anyone else has (in this comment section). The original was already a beautiful, heartfelt song. A man baring his soul and confessing his sins… but Roxy Music just took it to a whole other level, and built (respectfully) upon the foundation presented in the original to an elegant, emotional masterpiece. This goes well beyond being merely a “cover”. This is one of the greatest tributes of all time, wrought with raw emotion and beautiful musicianship and production.
Your summation is much more accurate than everything else I’ve read here.
Best cover ever , bryan s voice is incredible.
Possibly one of the best covers ever made..
Hoppy Hopkins No possibly about it.
No real doubt about it in my mind. As a huge Lennon fan even I know this is really Bryan Ferry's song, he just took ownership of it because he can sing it as it deserves to be sung.
Hurt - Johnny cash
The Best Version of this song.
The Amazing Bryan Ferry.
Timeless even in 2021.
Absolutely X
Agreed. Heard this before the John Lennon version.
Spot on!
The best 🎶♥️!!
love this group and this song even in 2024 i cannot let go of the 80's music it was the best
Beautiful man, beautiful singer, beautiful song.
It unreal the you must get anyway thanks for the Newcastle arena what a show it was
Shut up
This is ridiculous! John Lennon made this. So don't even think about that you might like this song! J-J-Just don't listen to Roxy music bullshit *John Lennon* yeah *John* freaking *Lennon* wrote this masterpiece goddess gracious!!
Some day we’ll be together again with our parents and the people we love, and it will be forever!
Thats great story Dave .Sorry for your loss ..R.I.P.
JustBowser man, calm down. He just told about his memories and that‘s okay. So u r telling me that I‘m not allowed to like cover versions? Get a life
The moment his whistleing goes into the synths, gives me goosebumps every time!
w lammy it hits the soul...
Love it babe x
Show
the same:from 3.50, i am ko each time i heard it., and it is the same thing for so many years; strange feeling...
I saw him at Siromme Winery in Oz last year. Live he's awesome !!!!
That synth music that was everywhere in the early 1980s, from Bowie, Roxy Music and Duran Duran - you just can't beat it and much kudos to anyone that lived thru it first hand like me. So many great memories.
Mr Jones kudos for living thru it
Yeah I was there thru the Thatch years.

@Lisa Gallivan I stand by what I said 5 hours ago I won't contradict what I said i was right then i am right now
Lennon being a wife beater it's probably best to forget his version
@@MephProduction The Song's about Paul not his Wife.
Bryan Ferry - what a legend. Most stylish of all the 80s & 90s rockers,
Brian Ferry can really sing Jealous Guy. The best
yes, the best!
Yes indeed,the best ever
Is it the song Lennon or ferry or our conscious that brings a tear to the eye
Helen Rose
Bryan
@@ralex3697 yes Robin annoys me to hell when they spell it with an i.
The synth intro is so melancholic. One of their best songs, i have to add Avalon with the haunting female vocals is stunning as well.
one of my main criticism is that the synth intro should have been longer. it is soo good..
There’s a great story behind those female vocals on Avalon. It was a total last minute thing, not planned at all.
The hair style, the crying of the sax, the suits, everything in this piece of art made it so classy.
That is what happens when You go to Art College !
i fkn miss the 80s
That's why that kind of rock and roll is called glam rock
And that beautiful synth in the outro
@@derekstynes9631 Not anymore.

BrYan!
The “Master of Cool” who absolutely masters this incredible cover version.
40 years later still sounds amazing, a testament to Roxy's interpretation making it an even bigger classic than the original.
Yep!
Yeah absolutly
Lennon may have written this but roxy music made it.
I totally agree
100%
Nobody can deny the impact and importance of JL and of course the Beatles, but this has to be the best cover of all time, and absolutely shows Bryan is up there with the absolute legends and pioneers of rock/pop and not forgetting an icon of popular culture! BF "Legend"
Hey im silvi from Germany IS so Nice mega Musik
Best cover, no. Best Tribute, yes
My .02, Johnny Cash “Hurt” is a better cover.
Hats off to Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music....

It was already a great song, but I agree this version is better.
I thought you were quoting a line from ''Hey Jude'
Everything about this guy exudes sophistication and class. And the band, real heart and soul.
Such a beautiful song, Roxy as always produces a unique sound to a classic. Will always love Roxy Music
Yes those eyes could seduce me into bed ;-)
Man Ferry nails the shit out of it, especially the whistle solo. Not to mention Manzanera and Mckay putting out a serious 80s vibe. What a bunch of real 80s men about town, not to mention their earlier gems. You dont pull off class like this unless you were in a shooting war with Bowie in the 70s and the rooskies

Roxy music LA mia gioventù una canzone che non muore mai non può fantastica ❤
Version wouldn't exist without Lennon and he deserves all the credit for it. But I just prefer this version, sounds to it are just perfect.
One of the finest songs ever written, and of course written by one of the finest songwriters in history the amazing John Lennon. Fantastic tribute to him by Brian Ferry.
Best not you forget who the song was written to and for.....
Wow another classic that Roxy Music covered and improved - takes me straight back to my youth. How beautiful was he?
Dark black hair and blue eyes - what a combo..
Effortlessly classy, stand out music, beautiful man with a unique voice and tons of style.
I loved being a teenager/young woman in the 70/80's - we were spoiled for music.
we sure were .I was a very young music loving teenager in that year too
Brilliant cover version. Just look at Bryan Ferry in this video, he was the original New Romantic, just so cool ❤
the whistling at the end of this track is epic by 'mr cool' ferry.
Everything these guys do, they do it well. Even if it's a cover.
Brian has such a unique voice.
A blue/grey suit and a pink tie.... So chic ! So elegant !!! So british....This man is the definition of a gentleman....
& all that style only 2 years after the 70s!!!
He looks like prince Charles, but, of course, in a really better version.
the two dapper gentlemen of modern music, this guy and david bowie.
The nazi's may have had the best style, but Bryan sure comes a close 2nd.
And don’t forget the white shoes! God I miss the ‘80s
I'm from Israel and I love Bryan Perry and Roxy Music so much, British music at its best
Timeless classic. Never gets old.
Sublimely brilliant, is there such a saying?. But u know what I mean.

2024 loving this masterpeice listening from Seychelles especially the whistling great memories.❤❤
Bryan Ferry......smooth, smouldering, addictive and has won my heart with those eyes and facial expressions. One handsome Gent.
Bryan Ferry wore his suits with class and style--and still rocks!
How ultra-cool was Bryan Ferry! Handsome and cool. The video is timeless. Beautiful lush melody amidst horrible background tragedy. I love the strings at 3.50
He’s much older now, but still very cool.
Shivers down the spine (no, through the whole body) from start to finish? Too damn right....
