It was a rainy day in October 1993. My gf and I hit the road from Bremen to Amsterdam listening Avalon album. Uncertainties and tension of being ex Yugoslavian war refugees mixed with a beauty of lovely moments between us collided with sounds coming from my old car’s speakers. In retrospective your hard days somehow became the most memorable hours of your life. It’s 2024, I live in California, my ex gf is somewhere in Croatia and I am still listening to this album. Love to all of you.
Dude, that's awesome, thank you for sharing just a glimpse of your life. I can only imagine growing up in that environment. I grew up in Galway, NY in the US. Snowmobiles, chopping wood, shoveling snow in the winters, dirt bikes, allot of Jack Danials, Southern Comfort, and malt liquor beer in the summer. My hat's off to you. The strong survive.

Superlative stuff. Really summed up the groove of the era , this.
Мне 40 лет, и я обожаю эту композицию

Gives me chills is a line my grandparents always say
Thx for making me feel old at 53. Then again my gf 20 years younger than me makes me feel young. It's amazing what MONEY can buy. Lol
Brian Ferry’s voice sounds so freaking cool on this track. What a timeless masterpiece!
There is something that yearns and aches in his vocals on this song - so much emotion.
Im 58 still love this song love roxy music
I'm 72 and still love this man's voice sexy style❤
I used to feel that way until my younger cousin said he sounded like Julio Iglesias. No offense to julio, but it kind of made me gag. This is such a great song.
This entire album was an absolute masterpiece! Still sounds great in 2024. Genius songwriting and arranging.

Pure class…. No one oozes sophistication like Bryan Ferry.
42 years and it sounds as young and fresh as yesterday. What a brilliant work of art!
I was 21 in 1982. This song is a testament of my life, as I traveled through that glorious, wonderful decade of the 1980's.
Yes
I hope if is an afterlife I can go back there. Honestly. But not on a loop, necessarily. But if I do, so be it. I’ll take it just to be there again.

As a recovering heroin addict with 4 years I find from time to time there are things that stop me in my tracks & make me appreciate the life that I am living despite my short comings , when I hear this song I am taken back to that very day when I decided to make that change . Well said. The lyrics are deceptively simple on the surface. The song gains meaning as we age and become wiser, learning what the meaning of life and experience is.

Terrible video. This song deserves more than this.
The way it sweeps, swoons, hits highs, lows and flows, Ferry's vocals are like another instrument in its own right. National treasure.
Roxy Music will always be one of the best bast!
It was at the beginning of electronic manipulation of real artists. Yes he sound neat and kind, his swaying "dance" moves are sweet. Nice. Has anyone ventured a live cover? 😊
National treasure for who? I may be a stupid 32 year old that played vice city when it first came out, but I thought Ferry was British? If that is the case, the now late Queen should've knighted him if she hadn't already.
Should be knighted.
Absolutely.
He and Roxy spawned two full music genres.
I am 84 years old and I still want to get up and dance the night away when I hear this tune.
Still listening after all these years! It would have been very interesting if Roxy had kept going in the same direction for another album. Definitely a musician's album!❤

❤
Not a song, An anthem for the ages and is timeless. They will still be playing this Masterpiece 1,000+ years from now and still be perplexed how great it is without really knowing why? No one can say why hearing the opening salvo brings so much joy to our hearts and minds. Don't get me started on the drummer and his cymbal splashes and mixed rim shots and tom tom rolls and a session drummer at that who has played with all the greats and it shows in his performance on this anthem, not over powering but as steady as a Swiss watch throwing in subtle percussive surprises and twists and turns and treats to our ears. Bravo Andy Newmark! You leave me panting for more and besides Bryan you are largely responsible for one of the greatest anthems in rock history and wish it would never end. More Than This? Nothing is more than this anthem and thank you for putting lives in perspective and every morning when you get out of bed and your feet touch the floor say "bonus" as that's what it is.
This song has an ethereal quality to it. It is masterfully done and will last through the ages!

There is only one word fitting for this: timeless
My God, there was no decade like the 80s. The optimism, the sufficient technologies, the attention to your fellow human being, the relaxed attitudes, the fun without the vanity the internet & social media has created. Every summer felt like an eternity of joy. It was just bloody fantastic!
Lovely comment, so true
"The optimism." Ha, that's a good one. When Reagan asked "What's going on in South Africa?" One of his cabinet members said, "They're doing well. Botha is a nice, decent guy."
Not sure what 80’s you lived through but it was also the rise of Reaganomics and the Cold War.

Glad u said that nothing more beautiful than this song x
I'm 55 years old-the 80s were the best time-I miss this carefree time-thank you that I was allowed to be there
Wonderful times (and yet stressful times) the 80s. "Carefree" = "San Souci" (in English, we have a joke translation of sansouci = "Woebegone" - "woe/worry is gone"). From my Croatian ancestry = "bez briga". I wonder if my children with have that sense of "woe be gone". We had that existential threat of nuclear war in the 80s, and while this time feels less fatal there is some new danger that plagues us. Thank you, Herr Grabenhorst, for mentioning that wonderful idea of being carefree / san souci / bez briga.
Me too. 1965 vintage.

Yes. The love you spend the rest of your life grieving...unfortunately so.
so eloquently put,,i have been lucky to have the love of 4 fantastic women in my life and i still love them all,,,i cherish the memories i have of them and the times we shared
Beautifully put and absolutely true. If those feelings for that 1st love lasted a lifetime, then you have been more blessed than the richest person on this planet. Here's to L❤️VE.
I thought it was about death and the absence of an afterlife.
It's not just Ferry's voice it's the whole package in this song.
But particularly the melodic tone of Phil Manzaneras 🎸
The outro in and of itself is heartbreakingly beautiful and good
The words of this record hit hard? ...MORE THAN THIS? ..He is talking about true love where you dive in head over heals and forget the real world! I have been there maybe the same as a few of you? Some say this is infatuation to a partner? But how do we define love to reality? If you ever actually feel this very special level of love then you will understand that it is something very different to the normality of this world! Indeed you might cus and disagree? But despite your marriage, were you ever TRULY in love 'at this level'? Food for thought, guys!
I am only 20.
And i just love 80s' music.❤❤
This is such a beautiful song 💝💝💝💝💝
My god, that VOICE. Bryan Ferry could sing numbers out of the phone book and make them sound romantic. And the synth outro .... such a thing of absolute beauty.
Your right Andrea what a wonderful singer ❤️
Don't forget the perfect guitar chords from Phil Manzanera in the outro... sublime!
Agree on the outro... Whenever this is played on the radio during an autumnal / winter drive the outro feels like stereo heaven.. The restraint in the guitar playing and the subtlety of the drumming sounds superb

This is one of the earliest songs I can recall hearing as a very young child. I was born 2002. I recently got to see Roxy Music live during their 2022 tour. My mother, and my grandmother, adore them. I was very quietly emotional throughout the gig-I couldn’t quite believe, being from a completely different generation, that I was able to experience such an iconic, incredible band play live. Beyond amazing.
Im so jealous!
Did your mom & grandmother go with you? I went with mine to see one of the last performances of... Elvis Presley! I was about 6.
Music knows no boundaries. A song from 100 years ago can make me smile or cry. Music changes through generations, but you can still relate emotionally to it. Glad you enjoyed it.
Makes today's 'music' sound like...💩?
That is SO TERRIFIC GIRL!
I can't use many words to describe the beauty of this song... awe, nostalgia, inspiration, sadness, a cocktail of emotions that hit me hard, it's literally one of the (if not the most) beautiful song I've ever heard, I never thought a song could make me feel so much.. thanks, thank you so much Roxy Music, Vice City and Mr. Tony Vercetti
I feel exactly the same way. This song was always my favorite when I played Vice City as a kid. Also, I'm sorry but his name is Tommy.
