  • The last of 3 videos for American actors who want a perfect British
    accent. This middle-class 'Southern' accent is the one most often wanted, and examples of vowel-sounds are given here - with pauses for you to say them afterwards. Dozens of other videos for actors are at his website Windsor-Cunningham.com

    • @NewYorkActingCoach
      @NewYorkActingCoach  10 лет назад +257

      Yes, you're right. But there are many different accents and some people speak all of them more casually, or in a hurry, missing out some letters in the way you've noticed. But to begin with it's best to say everything clearly, and in the kind of accent most actors (and people learning English) need to learn the 't' needs to be said. Odd questions can always be asked best on the 'Contact' page of my website Windsor-Cunningham.com at no charge, and if you ever need more help I teach on Skype. John

    You've made learning a British accent so simple to grasp. it just takes practice, but the hardest thing is to not force it. Letting it come naturally. But I guess that's difficult because you hear yourself and you don't know what natural is anymore but I'm quick. Thanks for the lessons.

    • @NewYorkActingCoach
      @NewYorkActingCoach  10 лет назад +108

      Yes, working on the sounds feels different to speaking with feeling / or just speaking as oneself. Maybe ask a friend if you can speak in the accent for 15 minutes with them. Or read and study British stuff more mayube in order to feel more at home with the accent. It can happen fast, or take years to feel true with an accent, but that isnt the point, the point is to be true, and secondly do the accent. Use my website's e-mail if you've questions please. J

    I'm starting to study linguistics at college and I find dialects really interesting, but I haven't taken a class on them yet. Watching your videos is helping me distinguish the sounds in American and British English, especially the second one... this third one was a bit more obvious for me since the types of sound distinctions you were addressing are vowels you see in almost any dialect of English, so I know their IPA symbols. I think it would be interesting to learn about every English language accent, but that might have to wait for a formal class.

      What matters is that everyone's British accent is different, and nobody really cares nowadays. Audiences (or people in 'real' life) don't think about anyone's accent, they think about whether a person is speaking CLEARLY and whether there is any kindness in their voice. If you manage that then nobody will worry about the accent's details. Even the great Marlon Brando used a ridiculously bad British accent in his film of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY - and got away with it because he made his lines make sense. That is what matters. John

    i'm so happy i found this i'm going to be going to an anime convention in about 2 weeks and the character i'm cosplaying is British and i had seen other videos online before about how to speak like a native of Britain but they weren't the greatest videos I actually learned a lot from this series and never knew that there were certain letters and things Americans didn't pronounce the same until it was called out :D

    These videos were immensely helpful. I can definitely see why you're so good at what you do! You really have a way of grouping things to help Americans understand the difference between ours and British accents.

    Thank you very much Mr. Windsor-Cunningham! I found your videos quite helpful. A non-native English speaker here, whose accent has been described as her own, leaning slightly towards American, but I have been exposing myself to the beautiful British accent and its regional varities for a few years and would love to master it. I can do it in my head while reading silently, time to take it to the next level!

    • @NewYorkActingCoach
      @NewYorkActingCoach  10 лет назад +2

      Thanks for kind words. Seems to me you may have found a way, by doing it silently, of getting your voice to be just the way that you want, and to feel natural. I do coaching on Skype for people who want to fine-tune, and can always be contacted on the website for that, but also to answer odd questions for free, so do feel free to ask. On Windsor-Cunningham.com Thanks again.
