VOICE EXERCISES for ACTORS 1

- Another video from New York and Skype acting-coach John Windsor-Cunningham, this one for actors whose voices are STUCK! More exercises in July (2024), but this first short exercise is done by leading actors over the world. (A list of the "leading actors" John has worked with is in the 'ABOUT JOHN' page of the website - Windsor-Cunningham.com And the aim is for all actors to stop their voices sounding tired, and be ready for John's main interest - to help actors see what is BEHIND any lines they have to say.
Thanks for kind words. It's quite hard to make clear - without my being a bore about it - that actors with clear voices, who are understood 'easily' just stand out. Working with or living with Tom Cruise or Viola Davis - whether you actually like them as actors or people, - must be quite pleasant, just from hearing the warm tone of their voice all the time. Women (and a few men) have trivialized for having 'sexy' voices, but it is the gentleness and clarity that's the attraction!. And anyone can GET that. John.
Thank you 😊
Thank you, this is a great one, looking forward to part two.
Wow I sound great! Never thought much about vocal warm ups. This will help me in my audition tomorrow!! Thank you!
I find that these kinds of dynamic exercises really helps with my mouth movement, especially when I get tongue tied. Thanks for the exercise!
Thank you! 👍😃
Thank you. I will be using these exercises quite often.
Thanks for the information!
I appreciate you so much John! Currently going for Jane in a school performance of Mary Poppins. Your videos are amazingly helpful and I’ve never found anyone better to help with auditions! ❤
Thanks for kind words! In fact all that's needed - when trying to do one's best - is for the lines to be understood as well as possible, and to say them clearly. The audience will love you for both! John.
Useful! Thank you.
Thank you for the info
Lovely. I think I will start every day with this exercise.
Had a problem with the PR portion. But, I’ll watch this a few more times and I know I’ll eventually get it.
Looking forward to the next two parts.
Thank you
How do you manage to say the word s Praise, Pram, Pray or Pretty!
@@NewYorkActingCoach I know how to say them, but my lips don’t … forgive me … flap around as loosely as yours. I seem to only be spitting. But, I will continue to work at it, and appreciate your reply.
You are correct in that after the exercises my voice does sound different to me. Thank you.
I'm not bothered by the notion that my lips 'flap' around. I'm quite happy with the idea! So don't concern yourself there. And - hopefully - when you say the words PRam, PRay, PReesent or PRo you're not spitting on everyone, and if you do, well I say more power to you. I can suggest a line of people who should be spat on. But, seriously, those words might be your PRimer or PRologue to keeping your spit for when you play Lady M or Nora. John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach 🥰
Thank you! One of my many regrets in life was not taking diction when I was a young man. These simple exercises brought a light into a dark room.
Yes, I know, the exercises seemed pointless when we were young, (and even for the first year at RADA), but they make the prospects of any politician/priest/actor/lawyer or judge a hundred times better. And more enjoyable. Best, John.
Thank you, this was so helpful! I’m not an actor, but I’m a nerdish writer with a number of pitch meetings lined -up, therefore I need to learn some public speaking skills before it is too late! Thanks again!😊
THe important thing is to speak clearly, and with some variety. And try to test the space you are going to use n advance, to see if people at the side will hear.. And if you are writing your own pitch just make the points clear. It is the way that bad politicians get votes and the reason why churches are nearly all half-empty. John.
This is great. This summer I'm working as a mailman, and I have plenty of "empty streets" to work on my voice.
Your exercises remind me of the Linklater technique, which they offered at my local Meisner school.
Sounds good, both Meisner and Linklater - if studied right - can help get an actor on the right path. J.
Excellent advice. Many thanks. Just the ticket as i wait in my car. . .
People have remarked on how much my acting has improved. I believe this is due in large part to your videos
Good idea! So many minutes wasted - just waiting - , when we might be making our voices gradually more clear! By the time I reach 100 I have high hopes for mine, for lots of other actors, and now yourself! And it doesn't cost anything! Thanks for watching. John
Always amazing content! Thank you sir! ✨
When will there be a part 2?
Kind of you to ask. It has just gone up. today, March 18, 2024, named VOICE EXERCISE for ACTORS (2), and the third by next week.
Is it possible to carry a play/show if you're THAT good, even if you're not the main part? Say the main part is average or below average at acting but you as a side part is 5x better than everyone else, can you still make the audience go "Wow" even if the rest of the actors are poor throughout the show? I know it sounds like an obvious answer but I'm just wondering that's ever happened to you before or seen it happen where an actor who isn't the main part is way better than the main part and everyone else and carries the show despite not being a main part
Yes, because some actors are more truthful, and deeper than others. so of course they stand out, keeping an audience happy despite the rest of the cast being a bore. (I won't name examples here as it would be unkind, which there's enough of already. The subtext of your lines will probably need to very clever, your voice may need to be easy to listen to, and you may want to have worked out a comedy way, or a physically attractive way of playing the character which SUITS you, which uses something inside you which is simply unlike what most other actors would do. And, - if you know what Sandy Meisner was REALLY on about, - you will find it a way to fit in with the other actors. John.
How do you find out what accent to use for your character in a play? I’m doing a play with my acting college but I’m not sure what accent my character should have. The play isn’t set in a certain country which requires a certain accent, and my character is mysterious and can be played in numerous ways so how do I find the accent for him?
Hard to answer without seeing you. But it is 2024 and nobody cares what your accent is, they care that an actor speaks clearly so that he or she is UNDERSTOOD. That means working out what your lines mean. That is what matters. And more than an accent which may sound fake. All (and I mean ALL) good actors play a side of THEMSELVES. You mustn't think about how you sound or look, you must get inside the arrogant way YOU can speak, or the charming way, or the excited way which suits what is behind the lines, not an accent. Sorry if that's not the answer you wanted. Clarity and truth. Accents are ridiculous. John Windsor-Cunningham
Thanks for the info sir!👍
sir is this voice exercise will work if I deliver my dialogue in hindi
The answer is to try it, and if you find it easier to do the Prrrrr sound AFTER you do the first 'buzzing' sound (v-v-v-v) then you know your voice is finding thngs easier. If not then maybe try it more or find another exercise. I have 2 more voice exercises if you search for them with my name on RUclips Jhn Windsor-Cunningham but they are not on my website.
@@NewYorkActingCoach sir I want to train myself professionally as an actor so Is your RUclips videos are enough to master my expression, my voice modulation and many other things or do I need to join something else....
Well, be carful who you ask, as we might just want your money and say you need to do our classes ! Look at the Wikipedia page of every actor you like and you will see that they all went to a drama school or did classes in acting. It is possible to get work without 'training' if there is a 'type' of part you can easily play and if you have a good voice and you know how to find what the lines you say really mean. I don't want to talk you into coming to me, so just go online and find some acting classes near where you live. If they think you are wonderful already THEN get an agent! John.
Sir I am an engineering student and have an ambition to become a good actor and by myself only I work on my expression and my dialogue dilivery because I do not find any good acting class in my city and one more request I want to talk to you once please sir...
@@hellohimanshuiiitnagpur8421 If you want to talk to me about becoming an actor, and what you need to do, that can't be done n a few lines here. Please use the CNTACT page n my website ( Windsor-Cunningham.com ) or my direct email ( jwcactor@yahoo.com ). And I will reply with details of how we could talk. John
Sir thank you .
When you first started acting many years ago as a beginner, how did you find out how to act properly and realistically? Is it something you learnt on your own or something you were taught
The answer is that I kept acting in any theatre job that would take me, so I sometimes found parts which 'suited ' me, in which I wasn't so terrible, and made me excited enough to go to the best classes I could find in the UK and USA, (and RADA), and I gained more and more EXPERIENCE. Then I knew what reality was, had done a few jobs well, and kept working ,and working, and working at it. John.
Thank you sooo much sir .. please teach about how to remove Nasel voice please share some exercises for that
I can't help you in a few words here. Find a voice-coach online near where you live, or come to me - if you can't find anyone else - using the 'Contact' page on my website, please. All actors are different and need different advice. John
Your thoughts on Alexander Technique, John?
Well, all I can tell you, - which isn't really a good answer - is that it worked for me. When I was at RADA they saw that I didn't stand up straight, looking quite weak when I was actually very fit, and they sent me to the center in London where it was taught every week, and to this day I know what it is to stand like a king (never having to bend down, and never having a bad back). So get a good teacher of it maybe. John
🙏🏾 thanks truly appreciate you are a jewel ✨
