It started for me back in 7th edition when my wife bought me a Astra Militarum Start Collecting Box.... Dozens of Lutein vids, over 50 books read, a combined 20,000pts of models from 5 different armies, almost every video game played and beaten, I can confirm first hand it is indeed a rabbit hole lmfao
Love this breakdown. Im not super familiar, so this is a cool primer to me. I do remember one day i spent at least an hour on the wiki reading in both amazement and horror 😂
I've recently caused someone to dive in by running the Wrath and Glory game. It was surreal to see it from the other side. That person now has nearly the entire heresy series and multiple modern 40k books.
I understand what you mean, but it struck me as funny since he said in the early part of the video the tagline for 40K is "in the grimdark future, there is only war".
Excellent overview! I've been weaving around the 40k universe for close to 30 years now, and this is possibly the best "short and digestible" introductions to the setting that I've ever heard. Kudos!
It's why the orkz are the best race. They're like a race of gag characters who only exist to fight forever, and have fun, using the power of imagination and believing in yourself, to do the impossible.
As one of those people who love reading the lore and invested/wasted :p years trying to put it together, I will say that was a really good summery. Well done. 4 more days, until us normal mortal get access to this game, and I can not wait.
@@XYZ-em5vu this guy is literally behind the fall of the Imperium to what it is now in 40K. Heck, he is the one who manipulated Horus into falling into corruption and plotted the fall of the Imperium. Weshammer has a lore video about Erebus if you want a short 30 minute rundown of why he is such a issue and source of many problems.
@@XYZ-em5vu As much people would blame Lorgar for Horus fall, Erebus been plotting these things for years. 40K lore is so damn amazing! Theres so much and super diverse stuff! Hope some people really get in to the setting, as the hobby side of 40K saved my life due to my depression being improved massively after picking up models and making some amazing friends in the hobby 🙏🏼
So Mr. House from New Vegas overseeing a vast interstellar empire - including ‘Brotherhood of Steel zealots’ - that is existentially threatened by Dragon Age’s Fade demons! I am 100% in 💪 In all seriousness, as someone entirely ignorant to WH40K lore but very excited about this game, your video helped tremendously. Thanks!
Y'know I never thought about that but it's a pretty solid comparison, kinda makes me wanna play some New Vegas again, Mr House is such a fun character. Since our times and that of Fallout: New Vegas are basically completely unknown for humanity in the year of 40k you could even invent some head canon where Mr House and the courier succeeded and that's why humanity was able to colonize the solar system and beyond, lmao.
Thank you so much for this video, I'm quite curious about Warhammer 40k lore but every time I try to watch some lore videos I end up drowning in concepts I'm not familiar with. Having such a "high level" explanation is a real bliss for new comers like me!
As a huge 40k fan and a lore nerd in general, i gotta you did an excellent job. There were a few moments when i had an "umm actually" thought but everytime I realized that while your statement may not have been completely accurate, there wasnt a more accurate way to succinctly give a basic understanding of the concept
This was really well explained, strait to the point with a little fat as possible, i'm really impressed. I would direct my friends to this primer above others for sure, thanks for this!
You did a great job of summing up WH40k for this game! I've never actually played the tabletop wargame, but I've been into the art and lore off and on since middle school in the late 80's, haha. It's such a unique, wild, satirical, and (of course) dark setting.
You are the man Morty, honestly i very much love you style and appreciate all your work you do. Admire the passion for games and how you've forged that into your career. Hope to do the same soon so you are a huge inspiration thank you.
This video was so helpful! Playing Rogue trader for the first time and have no WH 40k experience or knowledge. So much easier to follow along after watching this. Thanks a lot!!
Amazing breakdown - very helpful for someone who had/has no idea about the overall lore. Probably need to rewatch it again (or a few times) to get it to all sink in - but great job! Really looking forward to this game!
I came to understand most of this when I beat the beta build, which, for some, is a good thing because it leads me to think there are solid explanations for anyone unsure about 40K lore in-game. This is a good video for anyone coming to the game on release. Enjoyed the video, good upload Mort!
As someone pretty familiar with 40K this was really well done as a primer and wisely you avoided falling into the trap of going into detail about the Horus Heresy amongst other things.
Exactly what I was looking for, great video. This will be my first game related to Warhammer, I love cRPGs and especially Owlcat's Pathfinder games, so it's a good enough reason to play Rogue Trader. Most of the Warhammer lore videos I see are long and pay too much attention to events and characters which I can't say I care for. I just wanted a brief summary of the setting and the factions we'll encounter in the game. I wanted any mention of characters and events to be short and only mentioned if it impacts the general behavior of a faction you encounter. You did just that, thank you.
Nicely done. I would recommend this video to anybody who don't know anything about Warhammer 40K and want to play this game. A lot of informations for new people and it´s not too long.
I think my favorite aspect of the entire Warhammer universe is that the Imperium has become EXACTLY what the Emperor was trying to get away from and it was almost entirely his own fault.
Calling Warhammer 40k *"the final boss of nerdom"* is not without merit. It's so absurdly massive you'll probably need lifetimes to consume it all... and then there's the games too! 😂
Oh awesome! I'm glad you made this video because just like you I don't know much of anything about warhammer. I'm so excited for this game to come out! Been loving the beta and all the different outcomes for things so far

I'm in the tricky position of having been in and around Warhammer in general since Hero Quest in 1989, and 40K since Space Crusade in 1990. As a result, I'm continuously tripping over lore that's been retconned or changed without me noticing. Rather annoying, I think you'll agree. Also, a small note on 40K being a satire. People sometimes conflate Satire with parody and silliness or humor. 40K is not like that: it's satire in the same way as Judge Dredd. It's a very British form of satire that takes itself, and it's internal lore, very seriously but is absurd when examined from a modern perspective. Which isn't to say 40K can't be very silly when it wants to...
