Zombie Patio Make Over | No Spend Reset

  • Our Back Patio has not been cleaned up or updated in a few years! It looked like a zombie apocalypse with all the decaying and disintegrating stuff on it. I wanted to reset it so we could have family dinners back here but didn’t want to spend any money on decor, furnishings or updating it. As a recovering hoarder, I just wanted to use what we already had!

Ok Ms. Heart, I want you to paint the patio set! You are super creative, and capable, and all you need is a coat of Tremclad or Rustoleum and hand brush them out! And once you've breathed new life into them, you'll just keep them for another 10 years! This is where the creatives like you shine~ when you have to use that creativity to do something frugal. I BELIEVE IN YOU! And show us the final result pretty please. 💜

Yes to the idea of paining the patio set. Pick colors out of your rug. It will customize it and preserve it.

Perhaps this is a family painting project for you and the boys. Two chairs each and you are good to go. Wire brush and rust oleum are the first steps to prevent future rusting. Now the shed has some room you may be able to store them in there in the off season. Best wishes for whatever you decide.

I always get a little tearful when you say your hope and your prayer at the end of your videos meaning you want us to feel encouraged and inspired to accomplish something.
I have longstanding autoimmune illnesses which make me extremely exhausted and I have chronic pain. So, my clutter and “saving things for a rainy day” have snowballed.
You always brighten my day and encourage me to keep trying.
    Thank you.
And, although the outdoor furniture would like nice painted, I applaud you for redeeming it from not being used. It’s still functional and will provide lots of room for building happy memories with family and friends.
    Lisa Anne Dupree 🙂🌻🦋

The patio looks lovely, especially after hubby power sprayed the concrete. The rug is really pretty and the planters too. Your children’s gift of the flower basket hanging frame for Mother’s Day was so thoughtful and looks nice all potted up with plants. I know once you’ve treated the rust, and resprayed the chairs and the table, they’ll look as good as new and you’ll get another few years out of them. Also well done for placing the stroller on the curb, as I know this would have been hard for you, but after being outside all that time I knew you could see that it wouldn’t be safe for any child to sit in.

Yay!! Looks so good. And yay for composting, too. Aside from being great for your plants, it will save you money in the long run, and while you wait for that looong term payoff, you get lots of good vibes in the short term when you see how much waste you're diverting from the landfill. You got this!

I love those flowers. We call them Rose Moss. The patio looks great. If the furniture isn't broken, like you said, get some spray paint and freshen them up. Way cheaper than buying new furniture. Instead of buying new flowers this year, I found some flowers seeds tucked away. Some grew, some didn't.

just paint the patio floor with special color for outdoor cement floors, it is much easier to maintain then a carpet that gets disgusting very quickly, you can also spraypaint the chairs with special color against rust or just throw some pretty scarf over them.
the most important thing about a patio are the memories made with nice people, anything else is just an added bonus^^

My table and chair set is about 6 years old. I do have to get a new umbrella as that was blown up by the wind and ripped on the metal fencing. But Everything in my garden was either a hand me down or at least 6 years or more old. I like the old vintage look...Makes the color in the flowers be the Star of the Show. Using what you have is a good thing!

Another thing to consider if you are in or near a college town, is when students start moving around, especially at the end of a semester look for the stuff they leave behind at the curb. I live in a smaller college town on a dead end street. There's two houses across the road that students rent. This semester when they moved out there were dog kennels, patio furniture, amd a desk amd desk chair left on the curb. I snatched that patio furniture up in a hurry since I've been wanting something on my back porch to have a shady spot to watch the kids play. Someone else grabbed the desk and chair.
Friends work as painters and handyman type jobs have found some good stuff students have left behind in apartments as well.

The patio looks fab! I love the parasol pattern the most! Plus I have two tips! I don't know if it is available in the US but in the UK, HG Rust Remover liquid is great for jobs like restoring the patio furniture. Either that or Rust-Oleum does straight-to-rust paint if you wanted to paint over the rust instead.

Wanted to suggest similar - I have very good experience with HAMMERITE paint that you can apply (by a paintbrush) directly onto rusty metal. It would freshen up the look of the furniture for another summer or two and make it more visually enjoyable.

I LOVE the reset! You can totally paint the patio set, and it could last you a very long time. It's a great set, and you are so talented. A simple rustoleum spray paint would do the trick. And you can pick any color you like. I need to do the same with mine. I, too, left my patio set out too long for several years now. I bought material to redo the bottoms, which rotted away as they were cloth. My cushions look new because I did store them. You are inspiring me to finally do it! Love all your tips. I hope you have a lot of fun this summer with family and friends using your new space!

Portulaca is one of my favorite plants, I have it in a permanent bed and it comes back year after year. A tip ... empty all of your soil out of your pots into a wheelbarrow/kiddie pool, you can mix in soil amendments easily that way and lose less soil that way. The patio looks amazing.

I always put a few portulacas in my flower pots in memory of Mom. You can scatter the seed pods along your planting beds out back and they will come the next year.

I would've washed the moldy stuff in a bleach solution, ribsed then maybe also a vinegar solution and/or a baking soda rub to get rid of any leftover smell. Poor folks can't afford to buy new stuff so we sometimes clean or salvage from garbage day discards. Or go without. ... I love that rug you're using! I hope I find one just like it!

I am “shopping my stash” for so many things now… And, I only have a small apartment! LOL! The things (and the savings) really add up though! Cheers!

Your porch looks wonderful! I spray paint my outdoor furniture every few years and they just keep on going!

Paint the patio set! I got a free one off of facebook market place and painted it. It literally looked new. My husband was amazed at how good it looked. It only cost 12 bucks for the paint.

I have a whole 35l bag full with foldable shopping totes in their own little pouches. I never have a need again to buy another shopping bag outside. I keep throwing them into every handbag I own at minimum 2 per handbag for any surprise market/store visit. Also my country has outlawed plastic shopping bag since 2016 now.

Looks so nice! You are keeping me motivated to declutter. Threw out a box of old Christmas cards today. Also, just got a cordless sweeper from Aldi and it has a light on the front of it. Motivates me to sweep an area I clean like you do. Every little thing that leaves is freeing up space and it becomes easier to manage. Yay!
