My boys school always excepted clothing, naps sacks etc.. to give out to kids that didn't have much The one rule I had with my boys that if they saw anyone wearing what we donated to never never approach them and say I donated this. One day my son came home and said mommy today I saw someone wearing what we donated and he felt proud knowing that he helped someone that was in need.

I recommend moving the cube unit to the basement or to one of the boy's rooms. The living room will look less cluttered and more organized and calm.

I recommend making a caddy for all the art supplies and moving the games to the photo corner or into the boys' bedroom. they can bring what they want to play with and put it away. That way you can eliminate the whole cubby in the living room and upkeep is easier

Important topic! We over consume waaay too much and one way of changing that is to buy second hand first and give away the things you don’t need to somebody else. 😊 Plus it’s better for the environment! 💚♻️ Love your videos!

I worked up to getting rid of stuff. Started out selling things online, then I started giving it away on buy nothing groups, now I am able to load up car and take a bunch to goodwill easier than it use to be.

Being part of our local buy nothing group has been life-changing for me. It has allowed me to declutter so many items that I might’ve felt like I couldn’t before. I do not have hoarding disorder, but I am quite sentimental. I’ve done so much as to explain this when I post an item of my child’s and often I will get a private message afterwards from the Mom showing it being used by the next child. It makes me so happy!
Joined before the pandemic and during it, it was an essential way for some people to get food or items they needed because we do requests.
Instant someone might post we’re having a hard time and not sure what I’m gonna feed my kids tonight . Then offer things or ask to private message them. I have four chickens and it’s been so great to drop off a dozen eggs when people needed them.
It goes beyond just letting go of items I have consciously you no longer need. When another person post to request often I realize I do have a duplicate of that or that I can let it go and offer it.
It’s a beautiful way to get to know some of my neighbors and a very slow and somewhat distant that isn’t overwhelming . It really makes my neighborhood feel more like a village than it used to.

I've been cleaning beaches for years. I pick up trash--especially plastic-- most places I go. Here, near Chicago, there are beautiful forests, rivers, and Lake Michigan. I buy maybe 3 brand new items in a year. This year, I will buy a pair of shoes because I only own 2 pairs. Tina, Al's wife

Unfortunately, my buy nothing group isn’t that great. I tried to give things and it was just one person after another falling through on the items. It is much easier for me to donate to a local thrift store that gives back to the community than to mess around with messaging multiple people per item.

Melanie, I LOVE that dress! Those are my colors! Thanks for explaining your "Townsgiving" in more depth. I have that book on my list to check out from the library at some point this summer. Right now I am reading a book about how companies and advertisers use propaganda to overstimulate and profit from consumers...kinda goes hand in hand with the Buy Nothing.

Yes I have to be careful about just constantly scrolling through my buy nothing group. I only get on to gift things or if I’m looking for something specific. It can be a way to just continue to bring stuff into my house that we don’t really need. You’re so right that the shoppers high is a real thing and does occur even on buy nothing.

As I understand it, Buy Nothing, began on Bainbridge Island, WA (where I used to live). That small island had multiple Buy Nothing groups by region of the island because all the groups were so active. Through Buy Nothing we were blessed to receive a kid's bed, toddler bed, couch, veggies, and countless other things. It was amazing. Especially when we moved, I loved being able to return the favor.

I've been doing the buy nothing thing for a couple years but I don't get free stuff either. I only buy the necessities, clothes for kids when they grow up a size, shoes when they get torn, items to replace broken or worn out items, school supplies when we run out. We really don't need anything else. Kids get one Christmas present and one birthday present and I try to get the smallest toy possible because they rarely ever play with bulky toys. No seasonal items except one box for Christmas decor. I still wear clothes I wore 10-20 years ago. It's classic pieces, nothing trendy.

I’m in Australia, in my city there’s a buy nothing group for each suburb. I’ve picked up some beautiful items and given away items that I don’t use. My local supermarket, added an item to my delivery that I didn’t want and it’s not cost affective to return it, posted on my buy nothing facebook page and someone picked it up a couple of hours later. It’s so easy.

Even though you are a recovering hoarder you are allowed to have “new” to you things but in your case it’s a good rule of thumb to do the one in one out method. Just because you have things to still let go of doesn’t mean you are never allowed to change things up.

    • @ahoardersheart

You are absolutely right my friend 🙏🏼❤️ That’s why I’ll only post an “in search of” for something I really need! We can absolutely enjoy new things but for myself, it’s a matter of self control and recognizing my current limits when acquiring new things ❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

We also have free groups in Scranton pennsylvania. I run a kids clothing ministry through my church. I get donations from other people who don't want to post it themselves and I group them together and give them to people who need them. Biggest problem I have is hackers who sometimes will take it and bring it up to the consignment store for cash. It's a wonderful idea especially in this day and age to give away items you don't need

I didn’t know the second part even though I’ve been with them for years 😅
We have loved being part of our local. Made so many friends, too.
And my things now suits me better while the ones that are unloved here gets to be very loved elsewhere.
Between buynothing, verge/hard rubbish collection and church community we buy very few non-consumables. And actually regularly get consumables there, too (food esp)

Yep …. I once was an Admin of a local FB buy/sell group…. **was.**
It was baaad, because I was one of the few getting to see the post before it was even approved and put out there.
Again…. **was.** I did not have the self control that I have now and my gathering simply got … out of control.
*Yes, it was unfair that I, as an Admin, jumped on so many items before others had a chance, but at least the person was still getting their asking price from me.🙃

Thank you for sharing your experiences, it always motivates me to clean something, too (today in the garden).
I would recommend to store the things (games, stationary etc.) in the ikea (?) shelf elsewhere. Your boys can bring down from their rooms, what they need and afterwards put it back.
Eventually you can use the space for wardrobe or something? I remember you have no hallway... I think that's very hard, because everything gets immediately in the living room 😬

I find your channel personally very motivating and healing. The basement is truly amazing and reflects all of the hard work you have done on healing past trauma.
Where do you keep birthday cards and special event invitations etc?
Also I would be interested in your meal planning strategy and recipes from a busy mom.
