Great video. Your video was the only one showing to loosen the inner axle bolts. This was so easy and made the install process go so smooth. It also helped us find that some of the bolts were barely more than hand tight.
a piece of 4x2 with a hole thru it near top for old pinch bolt works well just put bolt thru sway arm hole and raise 4x2 with jack , saves a shit load of work , new unit drops in easy as shorter than stock
Just finished putting them on my car. Went for a ride on 17" and suspension is worth every penny I payed . Car is a lot more precise and response on steering. It is stiff, but because it's precise, it's not taking your teeths out, so going for a ride with family is not a problem. Smooth ride even through rough roads.
One very important item that i didnt see or hear any one talk about. SWAY BAR CLEARANCE!!! I had to loosen the sway bar up to fit the Bilstein in my 06 Passat. It being so much shorter than the OEM set up.
For the people that do this more often, you can use a gearbox support to push the strut upwards a little, that way you wont have to losen your driveshaft from the gearbox since it wont hit.
That'w why I paid a mechanic to do mine. I watched enough videos to know that if I did it myself...it would take me all day...and night. Mechanic did it in about 2 hours.
Few questions....1) Is your air set to certain torque settings? Not sure if there's any torque specs for all the bolts, or do we just "tighten" it....2) Is the process the same for DCC-equipped GTI's? Unfortunately DCC is mandatory with performance pack in Canada, which I really want but still hoping to change to coilovers. Not sure if this affects both hardware and software with the DCC? Thanks.
Back when I did my MKV I removed the big axle nut in the hub. Is removing the axle at the trans really better? Or is it because those axle bolts aren't cheap and need a lot of torque?
Hi, I got the same coilovers on my mk7.5 gti. But in the manual stand something with ride height. That you must be between a height. Did you do that? My b14 suspension is making noise in the front and the back and everything is oké the only thing whe can do is lift it up because I think it is to low?
Good tutorial. Followed it all the way for my install. However, it took me a while to figure out on the front passenger side that the Axle had to be unbolted from the transmission underneath the car...The clamps on the the stock struts were a pain to remove!
I have golf r 2015 and install ebach spring also he sway bars but car feels like carriage now it's great to coner but every bump feels like you will dent the rims what would you recommend put old springs on or use coilovers which one you recommend I don't have DCC
Is it OK to just zip everything together with the impact like that? I would figure a lot of this stuff is torque-sensitive. Does the impact tool used have some sort of advanced clutch that applied varying amounts of torque?
+EMuybridge This would be how most techs would install a suspension. There are torque specs recommended by VW which can be used if you feel more comfortable.
Always tighten things down to proper torque specs. This is a pretty shoddy job IMO. Things like that pinch bolt holding the knuckle to the bottom of the strut most likely has a specific procedure. Something like 30ft/lbs then back 90 degrees, then tighten to 75ft/lbs and tighten another 90 degrees is common on those types.
People really do over look torquing bolts properly. I had new wheels fitted recently that use centering rings, they absolutely need to be tightened to the proper torque using a star pattern or the wheels will not spin properly causing all sorts of noises/problems.. I had a shop that was ready to start grinding down my centering ring thinking that should solve the issue because they were dead set on just using the air guns to tighten down the bolts, i explained that you'll have one bolt tighter than another bolt and one might be over torqued and one under torqued and so on.. I had them tighten all bolts to 92lbs and have not had a problem with my wheels since. I will always follow the proper torque spec now.
I just did the springs upgrade to my Mk7 GTI and I love the way it looks as you said if you have a mk7 GTI you will see the different !! After driving this car for a year in the stock suspension I can feel a big difference !! I would like to know If I get this Bilstein PPS Coilovers can I have the same high as the sprigs !? Is the ride quality better than the springs.!! ?
El Chero Yes you can get a similar ride height as the springs. Our coil overs were lowered all the way down and should be able to go up around 1.5-2 in. As for ride quality the coil overs will be much more precise and your springs.
What is the plate on the axle bolts for? And does it have to go back on exactly the same? Does the axle have to line up exactly as it was, or does it not matter?
Hi,I installed b14 on my mk3 audi TT. The rear feels very bouncy and unsettling in undulations. It appears to be a bit soft and poorly damped. The front and rear are lowered by 20 and 15mm. I’ve no complaints on the front. Can you help to get this sorted. My m4 with kw clubsport coilovers feel way better and we’ll damped. Even Mild bumps upset the car too much

Do I have to unbolt the axle to do this since the suspension on the car is already shorter than the stock struts? I know I’ll have to purchase a strut spreader tool regardless.
Curious, why not just remove the knuckle in the front rather than loosen the axle? When I'm install mine I will also be replacing the rotors, pads, as well as brake lines so I was curious if that's be easier or not.

Why didn’t you just take the hub away from the shaft? Wouldn’t it be easier to do that? Since the hub comes out with the spring and shock absorbers? And then install the new coilovers on a workbench?
Bilstein mentions to always torque suspension to control arm while on load. Seems super important, is this something you recommend? I myself wasn't able to in my home garage.

On my 2015 Golf MK7, the rubber boot covers the drive shaft bolts...in your video for the GTI those bolts were exposed. I'm not sure how to remove that rubber boot to expose the drive shaft bolts... Your videos are very helpful. I think the rears are very straight forward. Thanks much!
My only criticism is tightening everything with a rattle gun, with suspension parts if you over tighten the rubbers to much they can squeak or wear and split prematurely! Should always use a torque wrench and torque to manufacture specs. Other then that nice job! 👍
What's the size of the XZN or triple square as you put it, that was used with the front suspension? I can't seem to find this info anywhere and I'd really like to get all the tools together before beginning this.

No camber adjustment on this particular coil over. However, you can purchase strut mount camber/caster adjusters. Also, if you get the more expensive bilstein coilovers, you can adjust ride height as well as damping stiffness.

I'll be installing my new bilstein coilovers this weekend. I noticed the strut mount in your video has no bump stop or dust boot. What should I do about the strut mount bump stops and dust boots on my vehicle? Are they easily removable?
Good Afternoon,
I recently installed my coilers thanks to this video however I'm hearing a clunking noise from the front on both sides, any ideas as to what it is

The shock bolt might come loose. It’s the bolt in the middle of the top hat that connects it to the strut.
strut bearing, or you have bottomed out and are hitting the bumpstops.
