Lyrics:
Night comes down and finds you alone
In a space and time of your own
Lost in dreams in a world full of shadows
Down the street the neon light shines
Offering refuge and hope to the blind
You stumble in with no thought of tomorrow
Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end up looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can't say no
Oh no no no, no no, no no
The lights are low and the music is loud
You watch yourself as you play to the crowd
One more face in a palace of mirrors
One more drink, you're sailing away
One more dream but it's looking okay
One more time to watch the flow of the river
Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end up looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can't say no
Oh, no no no, no no, no no no no no
You've seen it all, you've seen it before
Like a fool you always come back for more
You live your life like there was no more tomorrow
Night comes down and finds you alone
In a space and time of your own
Lost in dreams in a world full of shadows
Yes, I get a little lonely when the sun gets low
And I end up looking for somewhere to go
Yes, I should know better but I can't say no
Oh no no no, oh no no no, no no no no, no no no no, no no, no no...
#GerryRafferty #NightOwl - Видеоклипы
Sat here on a Sunday night in April 2024 and this wonderfully crafted song is still way ahead of anything we are listening to now.
Sad he died. He wasn’t that old. Think alcoholism played a part.
You are so right too there then sir of course as well too.
So far ahead
Gerry Rafferty , .has never got the recognition , that his talent deserved , I played , the album , City to City , over and over .
Mr Rafferty was an class act .
The instrumental arrangements are top tier and it’s amazing to see them playing it! The 70s truly was a great age for this type of music.
Shame that most radio stations only play Baker Street. Great song, great singer. Rest in peace, big man.
I do feel Gerry Rafferty deserved more of an accolade for the great music he created and yes this is the better than Baker Street .
Noticed that myself
I hear it quite a lot on Radio Jackie!
So true, and why 🤔
And again today!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
you may be right
You got that right. I heard it on the radio today and I couldn't stop singing along with it. Compared with this, most music today cannot even be classed as music.
A song that opens the heart Chakra ❤️
Agree 100%
Being an old hip hop fan I have to admit his voice is golden.
I could listen to this man's voice forever. RIP Gerry. 12 years gone today.
Push him more, an amazing talent. I’ve pushed him as much as I can on RUclips.
Genius in music.
@@bruces6347 Yeah I agree Unique and excellent 🖐❤🏴
What a voice..💁
Thanks I was wondering about that may he rest in peace
No screaming, no shouting, no vocal gymnastics. Just a great vocal, great musicianship, great song. Fantastic
A true gent with a great voice and a massive talent for writing songs, sadly missed X
Perfectly put Lee James 👍
I'm 57 yrs old and still listen to this material like I did when I was 13 RIP GERRY RAFFERTY
Gerry never raised his voice a true musician
So true, it’s the vocal gymnastics era, how many octaves can I go up in and down over and over
I was in my kitchen making myself a cuppa, and this song just popped into my head, quarterbacking it to remember it. I was born in 73, so I was very young when it was released. I lost my 17 yr old son last year. I listen to music to comfort me. So glad I found this one. I'm going to listen to this over and over because it's perfect.
Rafferty's mellow voice is timeless.
Definitely
My God…such a beautiful, haunting song. Gerry’s voice is like velvet, there will never be another like him. RIP you wonderful, talented man!
Indeed. Great artist….. so many great songs.
100 %
There will be another.
Gerry should have been knighted for all his services to entire world of singing and music .As I previously said all his songs he sang Gerry wrote .I will again remind every person Gerry never covered any other Artists tracks. So of course he was in no doubt profoundly underated .
Agree so sooooo much 👍😎 Gerry was talking about himself when he wrote this song!!!!! Breaks my heart when I listen to it......👊☹️ The big man never got to grips with his Demons, but he tried !!! God bless him, he tried.....
Being a night owl and previously a heavy drinker, this song really gets to depth of my soul. What a talent, RIP Gerry.
me too
Greatest respect
So same..
@Tenoderaaridifoll
Absolutely, as a former binge driker it's spot on in so many ways.
Yeah the crazy days our boozing at weekend looking for the party but what a song and hits home.
How Gerry didn't get more recognition for his talent/ music- - I don't know.
Dont know if you were around when this was released but I have the orig lp from day one . I can tell you it was huge then , also perhaps if he stayed off the gargle and lived a bit longer that might have helped. Yes im a Fan , seen TOO MUCH DRINK BACK THEN TO.
He didn’t like the limelight he shund it. He just wanted to be in the studio making music. He never toured America …..
He did.
Widocznie nie podpisał paktu z diabłem 😮
What an incredible voice. I never get tired of this beautiful song. RIP Gerry thanks for giving so much joy to so many.❤
👍👍👍 You are absolutely right!!
Yes same 😢
Yes same, he was g8t, god rest him 😢
Gerry was a great talent love his work especially this song.
RIP Sir sadly missed.
Mo Foster, the excellent bass player on this passed away a couple of weeks back. R.I.P Mo.
Oh bollocks… :(
"I get a little lonely when the sun gets low, and I end up looking for some place to go." Rest in peace Gerry. you never got the recognition you deserved, but it's not over yet, as the younger generation are starting to appreciate your magical songs and lyrics.
Gerry was a genius ,passed far too young. Sorely missed ❤
Probably the saddest song I've ever heard, so honest about his alcoholism
He obviously wrote this from personal experience. So sad that the demon drink got him in the end.
One of the best songs I’ve ever heard. RIP mate.
Totally agree, it's an absolute classic from a very talented musician.
So glad I was a teenager back then were the music was proper music and the artist did it for the music and not just fame..this gives me goosebumps every time and sends me back to 79...pure class..
This track just immerses you, and you just can’t help but love his voice.
Pity I was that wee bit young to appreciate his music....know a few that the demon drink got on the way
Think the song is about his demons..."I should know better, but I cant say no, no no no no no"!
One of the best musicians and song writers of all time, he really did not car about fame, just loved music and you can hear it in all of his songs plus he always tells a story of the trouble in his life, RIP Gerry
You're right Andy .All of the songs what Gerry wrote .In certain countries throughout the world will always play a considerable number of Gerry Rafferty Tracks
Feel for him his trouble I could relate to ,I used alcohol for many years to medicated my wounds. Untill got help from Buddhist monks
This is the reason why I am of the opinion .Gerry is immortal. As creating his own material .for the songs as being a lyricist. Never covered any other tracks from other Artists. World class musician enormously inspirational. To all generations within the music Industry !
The man is a frigging legend
Scotland,s greatest composer of popular music, love his voice
Real music, real people, proper musicians and no gimmicks tattoos or talentless tosspots
Different times...now long gone unfortunately.
How beautiful is this. Smooth and stylish music. Tuneful and heartfelt. Can we ever go back to these times? Thank you Gerry. Very missed.
One of the greatest songs ever made.

Yes
No not just you no way memories
Yep...immense sadness at the loss of such a sublime talent, it breaks my heart...RIP big man😪
How admirably humble is this...zero pretense, just straight groove and soul
One of the finest. I'll get lynched for this. Owl is better than Baker st Thanks Gerry, at 73 catch at the big jam in the sky shortly
Gerry’s sweet tone feels like a favourite pair of shoes or jacket. I’m 52 yrs old but first heard Gerry as a child due to my mums great taste in music. Used to look through her vinyl collection, loved the artwork for the City to City album. Loved Baker Street which mum would play on her aiwa stereo system way too loud for the neighbours liking. I really miss the days when people considered this to be great music 😢
It was early morning radio while eating breakfast getting ready for primary school for me. Among the painful some music was soothing and memorable even for littluns!
Some of us still do consider this to be great music - we all go on a journey with music. When I was 16 I got caught up in the punk explosion and then new wave before settling into a mix of rock and soul, At my age I can appreciate any genre but Gerry`s style and wonderful delivery is just sublime. Your mum certainly had good taste.
A true musician, he didnt care about fame. One of Scotlands finest :) He will never be forgotten x

I love this era of music. Compared to today's music it feels like sailing on a wooden ship with sails versus being stuck on a cruise ship. I miss it, but haven't forgotten the experience.
Great analogy!
Perfectly put, Bill.
There something about gerrys voice that has a calming effect, and just chills you out, what a great voice,
Mr Rafferty was often described as having a liquid voice, so smooth was his tone.....
@@Brian-om2hh absolutely
I played this song every night while driving around after my husband died. I definitely got a little lonely when the sun went down. Gerry's soothing voice was a great comfort.
Gerry Rafferty, Gordon Lightfoot, and John Denver in my opinion have the most calming and cozy sounding voices ever. RIP to all of them.

Gerry from a time when it didnt matter what you looked like, music mattered, and this guy cut it,RIP Gerry.
Nicely put and oh so true.
Maybe the most beautiful song in the world? Quite possibly. What a man!
Gerry looking incredibly cool
Gerry had a unique way , whether Melody or his vocal delivery, perfectionist maybe but Artist certainly !!
The best RIP Gerry xx
His daughter Martha has said that her Dad Gerry was likely an undiagnosed bipolar sufferer. This song is a witness to some of that: struggling against the inner dark, the self-medicating with alcohol, striving upwards & against those inner constraints in a darkness shot through with light.
Rest eternal grant unto Gerry, O Lord Jesus, and let light perpetual shine upon him. Amen.+
It's nothing like that at all.

As someone from North East England, i totally agree.
Without a doubt, absolutely!!
Same, Englishman here, Scotland gave the world a wonderful gift in Gerry.
Gerry was the pride of Paisley.
Such sad lyrics but this is my absolute favourite, god bless Gerry hope you're at peace🙏
The lyrics are very deep and dark, but a tell powerful story through the eyes of a drinker, and the problems associated with it.
My thoughts exactly pure brilliant
hes singing about his addictions and how Glasgow night life didn't help those addictions, but he still loved Glasgow 👌🏼
@Wayne Anthony Holmes It is a beautiful song but really sad at the same time lyrics are dealing with his addiction to alcohol and the perils of the Glasgow nightlife . RIP Gerry Rafferty you left us with a wonderful legacy of music.
Sad lyrics for a very sad man.

Amen to that James. Guess you must be human
Impossible not to fall in love with his music. One of the all time legendary musicians taken far too soon. 😢😊❤

Scotland's greatest export the legend that is Gerry Rafferty. The man was much more talented than anyone could ever imagine. I often wonder what delights Gerry could have brought to the world had he still been with us R.I.P Gerry your the man.
Nice tune good sound
Not near enough coverage when he passed. Was as influential or more than Bowie, and that's saying something. He just wasn't an everyday word, but his music lives on, and we thank him for it.
Its a very mellow song, timeless i think, great singer , he is popular in England as well very much
Stuck in the middle with us.
Gerry mulligan
Only found out about this song recently. So catchy, it's been playing over and over in my head for a couple of weeks now. A real gem of a song.
He was an awesome talent and the vocals get you, I wished I had seen him live, he was awesome.
Same. Check out Eye In The Sky by The Alan Parson's Project - also a masterpiece.
Strangely, I awoke this morning with this song in my head for no apparent reason. Great song, great talent taken to soon. A unique voice.
Britain was in the middle of the punk/new wave ‘revolution’ when Gerry was writing & performing his finest music. It was a very different musical landscape 40 plus years ago, yet his music endures through the decades. I was 16 years old back then & loved all the punk bands; but was too embarrassed to admit it to my friends/peers that I loved Gerry’s music too. I lived in Paisley, Scotland at the time (where Gerry was brought up,) & hopefully now I can make amends for my Gerry Rafferty guilty pleasure. So to all the people I knew back then…I loved Gerry then, I’ve loved him since & will continue to love him till my dying breath!
Your spot with that, well said
dead right, Stewart Mac.
I was 16 back in 1979,too. I’d go back in an instant, great days,I miss them so much.
I lived in Paisley also ! Near the Kilburn picture house ,Glasgow Rd,
Good memories of Paisley .💖
He was a gift from God.
"I get a little lonely when the sun gets low, and I end up looking for somewhere to go, yes I should know better but I can't say no..." Such a sad personal reflection on his addiction. RIP Gerald.
That was me all over for many years. I can really hear the alcoholism in this song, it's very sad. These days I'm sober, but it wasn't easy.

Every time I hear this song I'm transported back to Kerry, Ireland, looking out to the ocean, chest deep in water on a sun drenched beach. There's a special bond between skilled musicians playing high-quality music. The most enjoyable part of watching these videos of Gerry in studio is the looks on the faces of the musicians - you can see they're having a blast playing well-crafted music for a genius songwriter.

So many people like Gerry who possess high talents don't get recognized while so many who possess no talent constantly self-promote and get noticed. Genuineness does not always mean you'll reap what you deserve sadly.

Echoing everyone else here, sadly no. People aren't emotionally capable of it any more. The world is in a position not to enable it. It cares about different non- consequential things (in my opinion). I love RUclips for taking me "home" to a better time & place, not perfect, but much better where people greeted each other with a smile instead of a firm hi. Music reflects that. Listen to the melody and craftsmanship in this masterpiece. It can't happen today.
Man; that was great. What a voice Gerry Rafferty was blessed with. This’ the first time I’ve seen this studio session. So refreshing to see all the musicians and the producers in the same room. No computers with auto tuning junk. Just real singing and instruments being played. This is a masterpiece classic. This was an era when so much great music was being created by great artists. I’m so blessed to have grown up in the 70’s. I truly believe that the greatest music era with all of it’s great singers and musicians was the 60’s-80’s.
One of the best songwriters of all time. He hated doing these videos for the producers. Baker Street made him a legend and quite right too but this track is also a classic that is often ignored. I never get tired of listening to him sing or his music. His songs all told a story.

Gerry and his drinking, totally relatable..what a Guy he was.
I love Gerry Rafferty's voice, such a lovely sound - it is like an instrument in itself. Sad that he fell prey to the demon drink. It is used as a crutch by so many, often to hide shyness and self doubt. And some of the most gifted and special people, suffer the most crippling self doubt, it is one of life's great ironies. His old mate Billy Connolly was also a boozer but Billy gave it up years ago when he saw it was threatening to kill his talents and perhaps him too. A shame Gerry couldn't have done the same, he died too young.
glamdolly20 He was probably a highly sensitive person...
@@fredrikpaulun4956 Artists generally are.
I didn't realise he had a problem with drink. Such a loss.
There are a very few artists whose music never gets covered because they are so unique that to try and do so would be insulting, Gerry Rafferty was one of them.
I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the majority of musicians, and I mean great musicians, are alcoholics or addicts in one way or another. You get what I'm saying ? I have friends who are still in the business who can confirm that. It's a rare occurrence to find one who is as straight as a die and rely on nothing but their great talent to keep their heads above water.
Could listen to this song over and over again
His band is killer. Bass and drums lay down perfect, relaxed grooves for his songs.
He was blessed to have Mo Foster and Liam Genockey on Night Owl, Snakes and Ladders, and parts of Sleepwalking, two of the greatest session players in history. Mo sat in on most of his albums, Liam is only credited again on Rest in Blue.
His producer Hugh Murphy also played a part. He was responsible for tweaking that distinctive "big" sound so characteristic of Gerry's music......
Hugh Murphy, the producer had a big input there. He created that "big" sound......
Do you know who the guy is @ 2:40 playing the woodwind instrument?
Mo Foster on Fretless - Great
Every line in this song is genius. I often wonder if it's a bad thing that it makes such sense .
I love this record. Unfortunately most radio stations think he only made Baker Street.
BBC radio 2 brought me here , thank you 😊
It's unreal how little play his catalog gets.
Like so many other 'classic' artists, I'm afraid. Some radio stations think there's only one song by Queen, The Police, Journey, ELO etc etc
I heard it this morning on Radio London !
It's because this is deep.
This man's music brings so much of my youth back. He had one of the warmest voices
They put some girl in a short skirt and she sings some manufactured crap and sells millions of records but in ten years no one remembers her but this song and singer goes on forever.
Dead right, i am 76 and been listening to a proper talent for years right from the early days, night owl is, in my opinion one of the all time great albums, never got the recognition he deserved, except from people who appreciate musical talent at its finest, R.I.P. to a man whose music will still be listened to when all the so called pop stars of today have faded into oblivion (the sooner the better)

@@ndpcoop Agreed. All the hype and bull and sexualisation of performing female artists theses days is do with their lack of talent as well unfortunately.
@@thepub245 I only partially agree with this because there ARE female performers trying to change this. While I am in my mid fifties and prefer good rock (and there were many female performers...Janice Joplin, Heart, Stevie Nicks, Headpins) that could cut it,. there have been others since that I have loved (Concrete Blond, Dodi, Sarah McLaughclin, Adele, Pink...) Beautiful song. Kept me going through the darkest times in my life. (And I stumbled across it cos I love owls and the title drew me in...) Late nights in front of a computer with coffee and forums where most people were American so I stayed up until the small hours trying to find some company online.

I can recall first hearing this song on the radio in 1979. I loved it immediately!! I couldn’t afford to buy the vinyl record, therefore I used to have my cassette recorder next to the radio 📻 just waiting for the song to play again. At last it played!! It didn’t matter to me that the radio DJ talked over part it. I loved the song so much that I used to play that cassette all the time!!
🎶🎶 “Night comes down and finds you alone, In a space and time of your own… Lost in dreams in a world full of shadows…”🎶
Gerry Rafferty's Night Owl evokes the same sense of disconnect and alienation as in "Baker Street,".
‘Losing himself’ in dreams and shadows he finally regains his sense of life's flow. You feel the longing in Rafferty's isolation. And yet the flow of the music undercuts the alienation of the words and we lose ourselves in the Rafferty's warm vocal, the swaying rhythm, and the sweet Lyricon solo.
Gerry is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation.
From start to end, goosebumps and hairs stand up on my arms. I've adored this song since it came out when I was a kid. Always makes me feel emotional, and I never tire of hearing it. God bless you G.R x
