Guys my Dad was from Hunter hill in Paisley Scotland and was a friend of GR throughout school, obviously he followed his career when GR formed Stealers Wheels and all his solo career in the states, R I P GR. Every time one of his songs would be on the radio (mostly Baker Street) my old boy would say " I went to school with him " it used to drive me mad lol .
Is it rock, is it blues, is it jazz... no it's Jerry Rafferty! What a blend, what a brillant music man. It truly breaks my heart that he lost his battle.
Yes, Baker Street in late '78 was a great song with that saxophone, and still is a great song. Then I found Right Down the Line, and then this song, and still love all three of them. They never get old.
This is what a music video SHOULD be - the artist creating the song. Nothing fancy. No multimillion dollar movie production. Just the song and those involved in making at at the factory. God forbid someone like Bouncy and ZJ so a simple and to the point production like this...
I can't believe I was 17,when this song came out, bought the album, those were the best years of my life,70s and 80's, I feel like I live in a different world now..
Such an under rated singer song writer, Just as great as Lennon and McCartney in my humble bum opinion. He quite rightly shunned and distrusted an industry that wanted to exploit him, then it shunned him. But nearly 40 years later his songs meanings statements still have so much relevance today as did when they were written.
Yeah i agree man - it shits me when people over or misuse the expression ‘underrated’ (especially on RUclips) but Gerry Rafferty really is and was criminally underrated. He wrote so much music that was interesting, complex and so damn listenable. His music creates extraordinary atmospheres that pick you up and take you places. Absolute top class.
Perfection comes very rarely, and this is one of those rare occasions when everything falls into place to produce a work of art that only Jerry Rafferty can accomplish. Sadly Misses.
What a fabulous voice Gerry had I must admit I didn’t appreciate him or his band mates at the time ,the old saying “ you don’t appreciate what you’ve got until it’s gone” is so true. Superb footage everything in it is just perfect and just look at the smiles on their faces a great moment set in time……..
..and the poor man drank himself to death, passing away ten years ago in 2012. I was working in Kuwait when I heard the news. Such a crying shame. There was a documentary about him posted here on RUclips, and there was a wonderful tribute show in his honor with his family and friends participating, singing "Family Tree". Chills. It may still be here. His former bandmate Billy Connolly was part of it too.

No argument with the songwriting, vocal or playing talent but, dear god, did they need to learn some stagecraft and learn about how to dress. "It's all about the music" is no excuse. The greatest had _everything_ down.
blackmore4 ... Er .. actually the point is that these true musicians don’t need “stagecraft” or special clothes - unlike many nowadays whose “music” is so mediocre that they *need* the gimmicks to entice people to watch them ...
@@ingfig1 is right! What a shallow comment from blackmore4
Recorded at the legendary “Chipping Norton Studio’s in the south of the UK which is now a dentist clinic but Gerry was a legend and a Scotsman like myself so what’s not to like a fantastic recording from a legendary Scottish artist. RIP Gerry we love you mate.
Gerry was indeed a unique brilliant talent. Brings me down. But matters not his nationality, he was a total peoples person with issues like the rest of us RIP ❤️
I lived in Chipping Norton around the time this album was recorded...had a tour around the studio too...awesome to see where it all happened!
The world is a poorer place without this legend
FrankOwen73 he’s still alive and coming in concert to Buckhead Theatre ! But yes I’m the sense of no more of his tunes , I agree 👍🏻
April Plumley ummm, he died in 2011
What a legend, this place is missing Gerry Rafferty
My wife and I danced to Gerry, the night before she died, at home, during lockdowns. I miss her so much! 6 months alone. 😭😭😭
Sorry to hear of your loss, but lovely to hear you both had such a lovely last evening. Life if precious.
Heartfelt sorrow for your loss ❤️
Sorry isn't enough. My brother died during lockdown.I know it's not the same, but love will stay with us forever.
*@D T* ☘️ So sorry to read of the death of your wife. It's a very hard thing to adust to, but keep cherishing those precious memories, it can sometimes help to write those happy memories down on paper & often during that more & more memories start to come flooring back to you. My Thoughts are with you. 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Condolences and best wishes D.
That sensual sax , relentless beat, and powerful message. How can you go wrong??
Words sent from God!!
Right first time!🎶🎶🎶
Beautiful driving bass , what talented lads they are .
JUST listening to his voice brings me right back to my teens in the 70's
Great memories 💥🤗🥰🎶👍
❤❤❤❤❤
We were so fortunate to have spent our formative years in that decade.
Well said well bloody said for real
There's talent in that room.
Take note all so called pop stars, you do not need electronic trickery, just a bunch of very good musicians backing a guy with a unique hypnotic voice who will be listened to long after most of todays "stars" have been forgotten
Oh do hush - that argument is so stale and lame.
This songs absolutely flawless. It takes me back to the late 70's, I was about 9 years old, growing up living in England at the time. This song seems so right for that era It gives me goosebumps every time I hear this song. These musicians are virtuous! R.I.P Gerry Rafferty, you are a Legend.
England of the 1970's yeah it was great, yr country looks like Pakistan now, never seen so many women covered from head to toe. Well done, great job for womens rights.
Nice Comment..
Where are you now Fred , please ?
@Chait Singh Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh foreigners are people too. What about the two men who threw themselves into the liffy, their last words " I can't take it anymore". Are they not people our are you only interested in foreigners because you can m make money off them.
Same here!So evocative.
Yeah me too 9 in 1980, this came on in the car last night and i remembered it straight away but didnt know the title, so googled it and now here i am back in 1980 🎶👏👏👏👏R I P Gerry
I get it, it isn't everyone who could claim they went to school with a musical genius.
Haha that's a nice story to have 👍
@@Colm-c2y thanks man.
Is it rock, is it blues, is it jazz... no it's Jerry Rafferty! What a blend, what a brillant music man. It truly breaks my heart that he lost his battle.
Drugs and booze have robbed the world of so much unfulfilled genius.
@@phildavenport4150 Amen Phil! Didn't know what we really had until he was gone. Such a talent!

This song is one of the best lyrically and musically.........masterpiece really. Thank you very much .
The man was a genius full stop🥇🏴
I agree, love it all but the lyrics are so brilliant, somehow especially as one gets older.
Don can you please tell me if there is a tribute concert for this genius
Gerry is one of the greatest singer, songwriters that put his life in words. What a wonderful Gentleman.
Nothing else to say Donald very very sadly missed 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
He was a true music craftsman.
I always loved baker street as a kid growing up . In my middle 40s I realize it's done by a musical genius . This is true musical genius. Rip Gerry
Yes, Baker Street in late '78 was a great song with that saxophone, and still is a great song. Then I found Right Down the Line, and then this song, and still love all three of them. They never get old.
Baker Street is a great song, but it's a shame that it seems to be the 'go to' Gerry song for a lot of radio stations.
Let's face it, this man was a genius.
Beyond. It’s painful how brilliant he was musically.
I love his songs still listening I am now 85years young such a pity he sent to early
John Bowe just Effortless 🤷🏻♀️.. beat that ..❤️
Enjoy the mellow sounds John.
Check out 'Baker's Street" Prepare yourself for the Saxophone 🎷 You'll never be the same..Guaranteed! 😎
@@maryhuhnke8496 absolutely amazing music so missed rip gerry thanks for the music
Wow, almost 84 here!
This is a man who was drunk most of his life and still produced absolute genius, Gerry as a musician you got it right every time
He died from alcoholism but omfg what a genius of melody and sentiment
Just like Warren Zevon.
yeah, his drinking was one the many demons he was dealing with. there been stories the man was was not a fan of being famous. he hated fame.
Chris Story; Warren Zevon died of cancer. And was a notorious drunkard.
@@TheWalterKurtz well, I don't think his contribute to hos cancer but may have weaken his kidneys and other organs over time.
His sounds were hauntingly beautiful.♥♥♥
yes
Very much so. ❤
This is what a music video SHOULD be - the artist creating the song. Nothing fancy. No multimillion dollar movie production. Just the song and those involved in making at at the factory. God forbid someone like Bouncy and ZJ so a simple and to the point production like this...
Lucky to grow up in the 60's & 70's with the greatest music ever recorded... (64 in a month) Thank you Gerry... RIP Brother..
Well said well bloody said for real
Joe Egan on bass guitar, always smiling and lifelong friend of Gerry. Why can’t we get music like this nowadays, simple but beautiful. RIP Gerry.
Thought that was Joe.
Because no young people have any experience of anything anymore apart from plastic phones churning out shite
not joe egan
Isn't that Mo Foster?
Definitely Mo Foster on bass.

Abso-friggin-lutely my friend 👍🤪
Yes
Absolutely!!
The very best. I really love this tune!!
Oh hell yeah
This is a great song that never got the radio play it deserved. This is as good a song as "Baker Street" and "Right Down The Line".
Better than both of them.
I never heard "Get It Right Next Time" on the radio.
@@RonaldCharlesEpstein that's why it's such an underrated record.
FAD III better by far
Criminal when you listen to this rubbish now . Proper musicians and lyrics
Listening this 37 years later it's still powerful.
Our youth never really goes away, Robert. I'm still lost in that era and am quite happy with it.
Only the body gets old!
Music of this outstanding quality can only improve with age ,and the memories that accompany it also.!
Robert Bailie Gerry was in a zone unlike anything music has ever seen for a few years there. He couldn’t lose
I can't believe I was 17,when this song came out, bought the album, those were the best years of my life,70s and 80's, I feel like I live in a different world now..
‘ You’ve gotta die a little everyday to try and stay awake’. Gerry was a poet, amongst the best songwriters of the 20thC.
A pure classic better then Baker Street
I beg to differ, but to each their own
Such an under rated singer song writer, Just as great as Lennon and McCartney in my humble bum opinion. He quite rightly shunned and distrusted an industry that wanted to exploit him, then it shunned him. But nearly 40 years later his songs meanings statements still have so much relevance today as did when they were written.
Just wanted to make good music was not converted bout the industry
Yeah and rather fond of a wee drinky poo !!!😿😿😿
@@billsharkey9365 one mans mead is another mans poison, after all, west of Scotland working class men are all fond of glass.
Humblebum.......nice reference 👍
I love how the song builds with just the instruments then Gerry starts singing and it’s perfect 👌 harmony 👌
Harmony is the perfect word Michael!
My thoughts exactly 👌
Spot on sir
one of the greatest under rated artists of all time sad he is gone but the music lives on forever

As an old lady,it gets me out of bed, everyday.
I love seeing them all playing together. Creating a master piece.
Chezeex Days gone down is a great vid too
Jerry Rafferty night who's up for it.🕺✌️✌️✌️☺️
My God ...today we don't have musicians with such a great talent.
Somebody trying to control planet with bad music !!!
One of the greatest singer songwriters this group of islands has ever produced. The man was a genius
I'm 63, and I still love listening to Gerry Rafferty's music. What a talent he was!
Snap
Yeah. I agree and noticed the smiles too. A truly great wrap.
Certainly a lot better than the crud out there today. No doubt.
@DP Tree Sculptures. Agree on his voice. I was actually reminded of Supertramps Rick Davies voice
I was fortunate to see Gerry live in 1993.
They don’t make songs with a groove like this anymore
Music is still the best Gerry.I received your album city to city for my 21st birthday in 1978 .i am 67 now big fella and still lit to all of it.what a great man 🍺🤙

In 1979, I was 14. The music of that time was like heaven to me. This song was my favorite of that special year. I'm 51 now and it seems like yesterday. Still listening to the best music ever recorded.

My wife tells me that this is 'Dad' music but I just don't care, it still gives me chills every time I hear it. A whole unit of mega talented people working to create magic. I just wish Rafferty had of given them the due they deserved, particularly Raphael Ravenscroft.
Tell her "dad" music sounds like a lot better than this bullshit today.
Dad music is called that because Dads have done the grunt work for you and filtered the shit out so that you only listen to the good stuff.
You should thank your dads for putting you straight, appreciate the pain they went through to.leave you decent music to hear now.
I’m very fortunate, my kids and wife love all this music. She’s a huge Wings and 10cc fan. She’s got taste.
That legendary song is 1000000times better then that really ugly new rap or hihop shit
I agree with everybody's comments. Gerry is greatly and sadly missed. His harmonies were pure genius.
Me too, for what it's worth I'm just going to say that he could have easily stood amongst any company with his talent and never been seen as inferior.
