Yeah. As soon as I saw the name Gerry Rafferty, I thought "Wow - the saxophone used to be so huge in pop music - even David Bowie was playing one early in his career - and now it's basically extinct."

I'll never forget hearing that on the radio when it came out. That sax! Then the guitar comes out screaming right after it!
That song was a showy rollercoaster, like Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Total Eclipse of the Heart, and others, that took you on a musical, symphonic journey. They weren't just pop songs, they were epics.
Modern pop is more formulaic. Like the man said, they just don't write 'em like that anymore.

And I thought he had one of the smoothest, soothing male voices on the planet. I also have three of his most successful albums. Alcohol or not, you are sorely missed. RIP Gerry!

One of my favourite singer/songwriters of all time is Gerry Rafferty. Such a golden voice. And such immensely powerful lyrics. I used to think, " if only I could say so much by saying so little ". In his songwriting, he was a brilliant observer of the emotions and all the highs and lows of extreme living and needs and longings of being human, strengths and frailty. All of his music was in a league of its own. A master.

He was a very talented musician with an instantly-recognizable voice, and I was saddened to hear of his death back then. He was definitely too young to leave us and doubtless had much more music to create. But the photos provided in this video seem to hint at a man with serious internal issues. Some of the group photos have everyone smiling except Gerry, who looks like he can't wait for the photoshoot to be over. May he rest in peace.

My memories go back to the late 60s when my dad, in our new home in Hamilton, told me he had been to see a terrific folk group called the Humblebums.
I never met Gerry, but years later I did, albeit briefly, meet the Big Yin.
Gerry fell foul of that awful drug so many of us Scots love and fear. There is no shame in that, and certainly he gave such joy to so many millions around the world.

In 2020, Gerry's daughter Martha, set out to create a fresh posthumous album as a tribute to her late father. Rest in Blue was a mix of unreleased material recorded before Gerry's passing combined with some of his demo material going back to the '70s. Significant input to some of the new and revised songs came from Gerry's old music partner, Pawel Rosak, sole survivor of the '90s trio that comprised Gerry, Hugh Murphy, and Pawel. "Rest in Blue' was released on 3rd September 2021 to critical acclaim.

i live 20 miles from Poole & had never heard of Gerrys’ residency in Upton but am aware how Toyah & Fripp live 28 miles north near Salisbury & the Dire Straits tall Bass player & Knopfler are neighbours along the Solent new forest coast (the picturesque bit where there’s woodland ,marsh ,livestock grazing at the tree studded shingle/sandy shoreline ,panoramic views of downs traversing the western Island ,Cowes, shipping ,sailing & cruise liners & even the Portsmouth skyline at night or sunrise during good vis & not the busy crappy bits along Christchurch Bay with its 1960s residential blocks ,car parks & view only of The Needles because nobody appreciates or notices Purbeck to the west)but Gerry with a song the whole western world above 40 probably recognise went undetected so it could prove how he kept his head down somewhat. Bakers Arms ?
The lyrics of Night Owl certainly made his situation very clear & i always loved the solo at the end of the tune. Nice .

He rarely gets recognized as a really good guitarist. Sad ending for a talented musician and songwriter...
    Long live'em.

I saw him in concert at the queensbury hall , dunstable(since demolished) in 1978. Talk about Boring! His Baker Street was the Only highlight. He just stood their playing and singing like he had to do it.Even worse than Rod Stewart

    Thank you for the memories, H & H L.
Autumn 1969: I was invited by a friend (David Curry, I believe), for whose children I was a babysitter, to visit the Railway Inn, West Calder, during one of its 'Folk Nights'. _The Humblebums_ were playing/performing.
As we arrived, early, Billy (Connolly) was having a pint, sat at a table next to the stage (with his back to the stage). Gerry was on the stage, carefully checking out the sound system.
David and Billy gleefully greeted each other, and then I was introduced to Billy. He shook my hand, smiling warmly, and welcomed me. I brought some pints over, after asking Gerry what he preferred.
By that time, the pub was filling up. We four shared pints and happy blethers before Gerry and Billy started their gig.
    _A wonderful night._

I had no idea he was Stealer's Wheel. Joe Eagon is singing in the 'Stuck in the Middle' video minus the presence of Gerry Rafferty.

@woodzeppelin3241. Apparently Gerry had quit the band but as the single had “charted” a promo’ video was needed. So Joe Egan lip - synched over Gerry’s vocal.
