I am french and I love both versions. Making a cover of Brel is almost impossible. Why ? Because he lives his songs so intensely that he puts all emotions he has in them. It is not a matter of singing but a matter of living the song. And I must say that I love Bowie version too. Why ? Because he doesn't copy it, he interprets the song in his own way. He is one of the very few that could make a cover of Brel without being pompous, or totally wrong. Respect to these two great artists.

Yesterday, 30 November 2023, Shane McGowan of The Pogues passed. This prompted me to listen to "Dirty Old Town". Then this song by David popped into my head. It's a little-known Bowie song and was on the flip side of the "Starman" single. I played it out of earshot of my parents cos of the bawdy lyrics. A classic! RIP David and Shane.😢

I'm French, I grew up listening to Brel's song and singing that song, always astonished by the intensity of the lyrics and the emotion that grows stronger and stronger as the song goes on. I never thought I would like an English version just as much as the original (maybe more?) the lyrics are just perfect, it's not just a literal soulless translation but an adaptation at its finest. So beautiful. And Bowie is brilliant. I'm mad at myself for only finding out about this version today.

my memory is less than reliable,but I think it was also released, possibly as a12inch tho that seems unlikely, with"The whisky song? Ie: "show me the way to the old whisky bar, oh don't ask why,oh don't ask why...." But I may be mistaken. Brels original version is astonishing, formidable. Bowie's adaptation is a truly brilliant ,&an example of the art of musical alchemy rarely ever equalled.

Généralement, les adaptations de Brel en Anglais sont nullissimes (manque total de tragique lorsque Brel écrit tragique), mais là, chapeau !!! Le texte garde sa violence et sa force, et David Bowie chipote pas, et "mouille la chemise" comme le faisait le Grand Jacques.
C'est un grand, un très bel hommage, rendu à Brel. C'est du pur jus.
S'il existe un endroit où ils ont pu se retrouver (va savoir ???) ils doivent se murger ensemble, dans un troquet blafard sur les quais de l'éternité.

Do not forget Mort Shumann, who wrote the English translation and was the first to sing it. He was a friend of Jacques Brel and he translated several JB songs that gave way in 1968 to an off-Broadway musical "Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris".

I don't think it was ever released because I've been searching for it unsuccesfully ever since those sessions, mainly because of how well he sang this song. This rare track was on the B side of the single Sorrow, from Pin Ups, the album of covers by Bowie in 1973. For some reason Bowie decided to leave this gem off the album. I really wish he hadn't. You would think it would at least be included as a bonus track on Pin Ups CDs now. I remember buying the single Sorrow when it came out ( that's how old I am ) and I preferred the B side to the A side, and I imagine I was not the only one.
