Yeah, the others don't really seem to fit what I view as Thenardier. The 25th anniversary one made him seem halfway insane, and the movie one was only a pale imitation of this one.
Alun is funny and grungy and abhorrent and adorable and scary all wrapped into one. I have never seen another rendition of this character better played.
Yes, but he’s also an amazing actor in general. I loved the The Hollow Crown series so much and his character was quite different from Monsieur Thenadier.
@@tijay8507 A musical *is* a play. Not the *only* kind of play, of course. A non-musical play is called a straight play. They are both plays. By the way I did actually major in theater. Just so you know.
I only just started watching New Tricks and kept thinking, “Where have I seen the guy who plays Brian before.” Then this popped back up in my RUclips suggestions and I was blown away! What a fantastic actor.
@@jeffatuofl I know..I'd seen Alun in some films then started watching New Tricks and the same thing happened to me...I didnt realise his theatre work was so good as well. I was watching Braveheart one night and he popped up in that and I was so happy. 😄
I grew up watching a lot of crime dramas including New Tricks, so I always knew Alun Armstrong was an excellent actor, but I never realised this was him until today! I've been watching this recording for years and all, and he just *becomes* Maitre Thénardier so seamlessly that I never recognised him. Also did not know he could sing, let alone this well! My respect for this actor just keeps growing, it seems.
Like many British actors of his generation AA had a very solid grounding of working in theatre and learning his craft there as well as in a drama school. This is less and less of an option for younger actors, many of whom seem to create a stir on TV on the basis of one characterisation, but often can't seem to progress beyond that. But AA and his ilk developed and honed their abilities over and over before becoming "famous". He is really is splendid, isn't he?
Best ever. And all the cast of the. 25 anniversary. Don’t think they can better that. Vocally. So many people. Talented. On one stage. At one time. Priceless. I know it’s coming up. 40 th anniversary. There are many talented people out there. But. That 25 th anniversary takes some beating ❤
@darrenhaylock9942 - 100% agree, I was at this concert (3rd row left of center) Alun was absolutely BRILLIANT, as were the rest of the cast, Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast as Javert among a cast of pure magic ... Sky Arts have aired the 25th Anniv' concert several times, WHY oh WHY can't they play this in full, surely someone could remaster it !!!!!
My grandparents went to see this show when my papa went stationed in London in 95 and they loved it and they just recently took me to see it in Philly and I loved it and it was the national tour
I've watched 100 different renditions of this song by 100 different casts...and I grin from ear to ear every time I watch it. Everyone involved has an absolute ball every time this song is played. What a classic.
Someone help me, please! I can't stop watching this! It's been almost 2 hours, and still every viewing feels like the first one. I fear for my life! Edit: it's been a full month now. I thank everyone who sent food and water, but I'm starting to run out again! If this goes on much longer, please hold a Live Aid concert for me as it's my only hope.
I tried to send you some organic free-range chicken and fresh non-GMO spring vegetables. Unfortunately, I'm living in America and the compulsory melted Swiss cheese topping gunked up my fax machine. ...sigh.
Alun Armstrong is always fun to watch, not only in this production of Les Mis, but also in "New Tricks," "Sleepy Hollow," "Year of the Rabbit," and "Braveheart."
The first time I attended Les Lis Thernadier sauntered on stage and I thought I know him, who is he ? It was quite some time before I realised it was Alun Armstrong ! What an actor.
Alun Armstrong is one of those great British character actors , like Pete Postlethwaite and Toby Jones who outlast all those so called heartthrobs and romantic actors .
Every1 is awesome and incredible in this production! But, of course, i guess they had dozens of ppl auditioned for each charachter, and then picked the best...
She is indeed, both really, i can´t see another Thenardier couple doing this, as i can´t see another Jean ValJean that is not Colm WIlkinson, dont know i think they did a great job picking up the best performer for each character,
I first saw Alum in New Tricks. There was a show were the men were investigating a theatre about an old murder. Alum gets on stage to speak to the director. They are auditioning for a play . The offstage voice keeps saying do your piece " audition," or get off the stage. Alum looks down at the floor then looks up and does the to be or not to be speech. He was magnificent. I thinking he can act forgetting he was an actor.
Alun is so grimy in this performance! I can’t stop watching this! It’s fantastic!
Alun Armstrong was, & will always be, the best Thenardier by a country mile.
he is a superb character actor....
Outstanding performance from Alun Armstrong
Wonderful performance.
Just oozes sleaze. What a performance.
Yeah, the others don't really seem to fit what I view as Thenardier. The 25th anniversary one made him seem halfway insane, and the movie one was only a pale imitation of this one.
This man is even acting with his eyebrows. Simply sublime
Mrs Thenardier looks like she's having the time of her life lmao I love that

The only other person who came close for me (but only in concert form) is Matt Lucas
Agreed
he's charming in the most vile way, and he seems like he's having a lot of fun with the role!
Alun Armstrong's performance of a lifetime.
There will never be a better Master of the House than Alun Armstrong!
Agreed
His performance of this role is the best
he created the role for the west end and broadway...
@@markdaly1903 now now, it's not about who did it first it's who did it best.........he just happens to be both
i am absolutely obsessed with jenny galloway's performance here
His performance is unmatched..the pure glee in his villainy, plus the actor himself exultant in the role .. Armstrong!!!
He is absolutely wonderful in everything he does, and superb in this - every syllable cutting and clear as a knife, every expression riotously vile.
These two are the best ever.
The two kids were absolutely loving this
Alun Armstrong is one of those truly rare things - an incredibly talented actor who is very underrated.
true professional be it theatre, TV or film. he is not underrated by those who have worked with him.
Is best
What about that look he gives here 4:08 while the misses sings… sassy. 😂
Yes he a fab actor. Very surprised at his singing. Top guy xx nice to share someone with taste x
I really don’t know why it isn’t ‘Sir’ Alun Armstrong
This is the best part of the whole play, and the actors are having so much fun in this scene!
Yup, this is the comic relief song before it gets depressing again.
I know people raved over Les Mes, but I didn't care for it at all.
It is a musical not a play
Love this scene. Hilarious..much needed levity, like the grave diggers' dialouge in Hamlet.

Alun is one of the best english actors alive. A big fan from Finland.
The 2012 movie cannot hold a candle to the twisted charm of this performance.
You surprised? It's a bloody Tom Hooper film.
Alun is amazing!
Alun Armstrong, what can you say other than, Masterclass.
Alun Armstrong is unique, adds quality to everything he is in
Seen this show so many times and alum Armstrong is unbeatable🤗. His wife too is the best. Fabulous 😂
Absolutely brilliant, I know actors have singing on the curriculum at stage school but I’d never have thought that Alun Armstrong was this good 👏👍
Alun Armstrong is such a talented man he was brillant in Little Dorrit as well as New Tricks and in Les Mis
Yes mom and I loved❤ him in little Dorritt hope you saw him as a butler on Downton Abby. He is just the best thenerdier
The brilliance of the performers overshadows how good the editing is on this. The way they cut back and forth betweek closeups is brilliant.
4:46 those trumpets are fantastic
His facial expressions are excellent
I remember being shocked when I realized I recognized him from Braveheart. Exquisite professional in so many genres.
Some roles just wait for the right person to come along and bring them life. These are two of those people.
Alun makes this look easy, no wonder they repeat New Tricks all the time he's brilliant in that to.

Love this. Alun Armstrong is absolutely incredible. Regret never seeing him live.
The 10th anniversary of Les Mis showed it had the dream cast the male lineup in particular Colm Philip Matthew Alum were just brilliant
