I grew up watching a lot of crime dramas including New Tricks, so I always knew Alun Armstrong was an excellent actor, but I never realised this was him until today! I've been watching this recording for years and all, and he just *becomes* Maitre Thénardier so seamlessly that I never recognised him. Also did not know he could sing, let alone this well!
My respect for this actor just keeps growing, it seems.

Like many British actors of his generation AA had a very solid grounding of working in theatre and learning his craft there as well as in a drama school. This is less and less of an option for younger actors, many of whom seem to create a stir on TV on the basis of one characterisation, but often can't seem to progress beyond that. But AA and his ilk developed and honed their abilities over and over before becoming "famous". He is really is splendid, isn't he?
