Cosmo Canyon and Gongaga were hard to traverse, but I personally loved the aesthetic. Makes sense too, one is a jungle, and the other is basically the Grand Canyon haha. Cosmo Canyon gives me super Arizona vibes.

One thing Kalm isn't, though, is "calm." It has quite a lively atmosphere, in contrast to the Kalm in the original game, which is much more subdued.

Gongaga kinda sucks, but what I think they were doing was mixing it with the Ancient Forest. You had the mushroom jumps and stuff. Your right on the second play through it’s much easier.

The Temple of the Ancients being in a different location (right next to the Forgotten Capital) makes a lot of sense. In the original FFVII, I always wondered how Aerith managed to get off that island without the Tiny Bronco and traverse half the world all by herself, presumably being attacked by monsters along the way. Mind you, this is a game that has a talking lion/wolf/dog, an evil house that attacks you in the slums, and a robotic cat riding a stuffed moogle whose weapon of choice is a megaphone, so logic obviously isn't Final Fantasy VII's strong suit!

The logistics of Aerith travelling will forever be crazy, but yeah I agree it makes a lot of sense for that change. I even remember getting confused finding the Temple of the Ancients because I associate it so much with the City of the Ancients, it just works having them closer together.

Utahn here, it always reminded me of our southern region. It’s funny how often it’s used as inspiration, you really can’t blame them it’s a truly awe inspiring place.
I didn’t like how gongaga was, but I liked the canyon because it was still easy to run and glide about, but took some thought. I struggled hard with that jungle.

Amazing. Personally I love the aesthetic and grew up with references to it coming from seemingly random places in media (e.g. the setting of Roadrunner Looney tunes cartoons, and background stages from Tekken 1 where they used monument valley) so it's actually always been on my bucket list to visit the southern states. I agree with your points on cosmo region though, I thought it was pretty nice to navigate, particularly compared to Gongaga so didn't get the criticism so much.

I understand why they made things more compact. If it was the really huge, people would complain that most of the map was empty. Just like FF15. I imagine FF15 has a bigger map than FF7 Rebirth but it's Rebirth is more memorable since each area there's more to do and the towns are far more distinct.

It's a really interesting bit of worldbuilding in Rebirth that Shin-Ra seems to have a habit of building their cities and facilities literally on top of existing settlements. It's not something I noticed in the original, but in addition to Midgar, Junon fort similarly covers the existing city, and the same with the Gold Saucer over the top of Corel. It makes me wonder if, left to their own devices, they would have similarly built Neo Midgar above the Ancient Capital.

The only area I genuinely didn't care for was Gongaga, honestly. I tried to enjoy it, but mostly just found it frustrating. It was easy to get lost and the trees would often obstruct the camera. I think there had to have been some way to make those bouncy mushrooms actually fun, lol.
I've definitely heard a lot of criticisms of Cosmo Canyon, but I don't get it. I feel like it really isn't that hard to navigate, especially when you figure every single launch pad becomes a fast travel point. I loved exploring the town, too. The moment I heard that music, I wanted to cry.

The temple of the Ancients reminded me of an Atlantis type place, Atlantis being most likely a myth I know.

Heh. I don't think I've ever spoken to those guys, but who knows maybe we could rope in Ben Starr and do an all-British FF roundtable. In other news I do currently have a collab underway with Birds of Play on their channel which maybe of interest 👀

I had a relevation thinking about sephiroth the other day, as he based his whole new identity on the shina documents he found in the mansion after his breakdown, the story shows us these documents were inaccurate jenova not been a cetra and revenge he thinks he inherited is false. Which leads to this is sephiroth simple a product of his nature, as jenova is essentially calamity and destruction. Does he sting, basically because he is a scorpion? Did he ever have any control over this? Its wild for his whole being is based on innacurate information he sourced about himself

i love the world of rebirth, but some of the aesthetic choices compared to the original seem inferior to me, in particular the unique colour themes which distinguished locations originally
e.g. kalm losing its blue theme
e.g. mount corel losing its yellow sky
e.g. gold saucer losing its exterior gold theme, and interior rainbow theme
e.g. cosmo canyon losing its red sky
e.g. vincents underground cavern losing its purple theme

I think the outdoor areas would get some of those aesthetics back if they let us change the time of day, so the town’s lighting and objects would show the unique color themes.
