  • Following on from my speculation about a Final Fantasy VIII-2 and an FF8 Remake which i'll link to below, the remake potential of 'golden era' Final Fantasy titles seems most inclined now towards of Final Fantasy IX Remake. With successive leaks from both Nvidia and now Epic Games which has DLC packs titled Tetra Master Starter Pack, Thief's Knives and Cuisine Set which hints heavily to the FF9 Card Game and Zidane Tribal and Quina Quen respectively, we could see an imminent FF9 Remake announcement. Here we discuss precisely what that might look like and how and why Square Enix might approach the game as more 'polymorphic content'.

      Yeah, Itahana's character designs for this game are among my favourites across the series. He balanced whimsy high fantasy and a nod back to the SNES era with something distinctly new. I would hope they stay faithful-ish to that look rather than go anime/dissidia style.

      I agree. I hope they look exactly like their appearances in the FMVs in the original game. That would be indeed a faithful remake when it comes to art style. FF7 Remake managed to retain their appearances in Advent Children and made it even better. It’s said that FF9 Remake will have level of graphics similar to Crisis Core Reunion.

    I honestly don't trust SE to remake IX after seeing Rebirth, at least not with the same approach of making narrative changes and going the high-fidelity 3D graphics route. It's not what IX needs imo. I'd argue it doesn't even need anything but a coat of paint in terms of improving the hand-drawn backgrounds, the 3D models, and adding voice acting. Fans seem to agree on this because there's a few fan projects doing exactly those things.
    SE may not agree, so if I had a say I'd prefer if they just made a new FF that breaks with the recent streak of angsty protagonists (Noctis, Clive and now Cloud who has been brought back from the past). That's exactly what FF IX did back in the day, so it may be time for a brand-new spiritual successor, one that could stand on its own without having to be compared with its glorious original, rather than another cash-grabbing remake that is likely to miss the mark.

    The uncomfortable truth is that if the company truly respected both fans and the game, there would have been an effort to fix the many issues plaguing modern ports of FFIX. To ignore them or hand-wave away the issues as "why would they waste money on an old product?" goes against the themes of the game as an experience. I'm not angry at the people who will preorder whatever this is along with the DLC items, I feel a great sorrow that this is accepted and encouraged while critical thinking is systematically bullied out of the fanbase.
    Sorry to be so negative with a wall of text, the original was very important to me emotionally and started my journey with the pre-PS1 titles so I can't help but feel this way.

      @@oliverhopkins8074 The IX ports FUNCTION and that's about all the good that can be said about them. The backgrounds were upscaled with very little care for how they actually look and appear blurry. Animated textures don't work (e.g. eyes in Necron's arena). The models themselves are hardly improved. The game isn't a true remaster in the sense that your computer isn't even running the game itself - it's running a Unity emulator that's running the original PSX release. You can do the same thing by just playing the original on a PSX emulator with upscaling enabled. The latter honestly looks better. This lack of care is typical of SE in the last decade or more. The Zodiac Age remaster doesn't even contain upgraded assets, the game upscales textures live the exact same way an emulator can do. There was never any acknowledgement of issues and bugs in those, they just don't care beyond selling the same game again.

    This is a rare instance where I would be interested in a reimagining of the original. I always wondered what the FFIX of Yoshitaka Amano's concept art might have been like. Alas I think they would definitely lean into the cutesy aesthetic.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  23 дня назад +1

      I loved Amanos artwork for FF9 and I actually have a tattoo of Marcus from a painting of Tantalus that Amano did. I'm not sure how they'd render a realistic Amano style though, it'd probably be closer to FF7R than the OG FF9 look

    • @Jed-Rix
      @Jed-Rix 22 дня назад

      Amano wasn’t the main character designer of FF9. There were actually many character designers. Some made small contributions and quitted during development. If you’re interested in an FF game with art direction mainly by Amano, I recommend FF6. 5 is also a good one. For me they’re the two FF games where Amano’s style shines the most. I really want an FF6 Remake because I want Amano’s style to be brought to life.

    I adore FFIX and would love to see something in the future where they flesh out the characters and their individual journeys more. No crazy new curveballs added --- just an enrichment of what's already there. And if it was more marketed to kids, I can't see that being an inherently bad thing. I think sometimes people unjustly equate "children's" media to lesser quality media, and I've not found that to be the case. Writers of GOOD children's or family media know how to package mature themes and widely relatable ideas in ways that make them easily digestible for people of all ages.

I have no expectations of it happening but I think FF8 would benefit from the FF7R treatment. • @DutchDread
    @DutchDread 23 дня назад +4

    Unlike FFVII and FFVIII, FFIX is already perfect, there is nothing left to improve on here, or to fix, so I very much do not see the point in remaking it in the same way. FFVII needed a faithful remake because the old game had just aged to the point of essentially being lost. Unlike with it and 8, with 9 the argument that "you'll always have the original" is actually true and fair.
    I HATE the changes they made in FFVII remake, I think it destroyed the legacy of an amazing story, but with FFIX go crazy I say.

      id even say that 8 deserves the whole story expansion thing they did with 7, more than 7.
      i mean, og 7 was pretty much self contained. (im saying that as a compliment) what dirtied the water was the expansions they did outside of og7..

    I had to. Anyway I'm very scared for what they're gonna do because this game legitimately gave me a feeling of a social life when I moved from the north USA to a deeper south USA and the emotional connection is strong. REMAKE, okay. Add VA/ARPG elements but it needs to be almost a 1:1
    On another note our society and entertainment is so so entwined with NOSTALGIA. This is because it sells easier, it's about money and it sucks. Hopefully if they do Remake it's faithful and they have every possible resource to make it the best thing of the 2020s in gaming.

    My mixed feelings towards this is- I am team pro final fantasy vii remake/rebirth. As someone who loves the original it is a delight to see the characters more faithfully recreated than the compilation ever did with Cloud always being an emo edge lord and Aerith always being ethereally not tethered to this world- he is an edgelord but that’s because he is mentally a teenage boy and with that comes goofiness and sweetness- she is ethereal but also spunky snarky and flirty. And I’ve heard out some of the negative reviews and criticisms who denounce the changes or new information given because they think it doesn’t challenge the audience to imagine for themselves- I reject this because my argument is simply doing the exact same thing we’ve all known about for 20+ years won’t carry as much weight as rolling the dice to do something different. Plus I will wait until it’s completely done because I still might end up hating it but so far I’m all in to see where it goes.
    So you’d think I’d be all in for IX remake too and I am.. kinda. I love that era of final fantasy, but I wouldn’t want it to be a trend of going back and overloading and overhauling classics. If it became a trend it would start to feel as hollow as the majority of Disney live action remakes of their cartoon classics.
    But much like the Disney remakes I will be fair, I’ll take whatever comes on a case by case basis and form my opinion of each project. Though it is funny to me that 7 did this whole multiple worlds time travel type story and maybe 9 might do similar when the games most appropriate for that kind of plot line would actually be 8 and 10.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  23 дня назад +1

      Always felt 8 and 10 lean more to those themes too because the stories are based heavily on key events of generations past, and contending a fated future (have an old episode discussing their sequel/prequel potential). I think FF7 did it because there needed to be justification in it featuring Sephiroth, and nodding the OG somewhat. I think FF9 would come without that baggage and may be a legit embellished 1:1.

    I didn't like what they did in FF7 Remake. I don't believe that the current Square Enix has the ability to add good content to the original FF9 story and I doubt that Square Enix will make a 1:1 version of the Playstation 1 games. That being said, I would prefer that they not create any remakes of FF8 and FF9. If it's going to ruin the original story, it's better not to touch what's already loved by many.

    I hope they cancel it, I dont really need a remake of FF9. Having it with the Moguri mod is already perfect, if anything the only thing I miss is the two players option from the PS1 era to play with a loved one. All this new games with boring 3rd person cameras and action battles bore me to death, I hope they stop killing the memory of my favorite games =)

    Please, no. I don't want FF7 Remake's generic mid 2000's anime look for the FF9 remake. And the people currently working for SquareEnix aren't talented enough to accurately translate FF9's Studio Ghibli like style into a modern game. Just let it be. Unlike og FF7, FF9 still looks good, because it was a late PS1 game with very stylized character design.

    Genuinely hope it never sees the light of day. FFIX is fine, I'm literally playing it right now, it doesn't need a remake. The Tetra cards still look weirdly and notably terrible compared to the triple triad cards, but everything else looks and flows fine. Some small dialogue localisation fumbles, but that's about it.
    IX is weird because it's visually a kids' game, but has bigger and more adult themes than VIII and maybe even VII. (At the same time as having _a lot_ of comedy) So I disagree about 'It's fine if they lean into making it a kids game'. Genocide, slavery and existential angst are not kids themes. A remake would need to retain those or it would be another corporate whitewash. Which yeah, I do agree with the tone of this overall, is what's most likely to happen - just a dumbed-down cash grab.
    Also speaking personally I don't need another influx of 'fans' who had never heard of Final Fantasy before the release telling me that if you don't worship everything the corporation has done, you're not a real fan.

    Square isn't Square Enix. SE cannot tell stories ... demonstrably
    They get great ideas like ff13 and completely squander it.

    They didnt remake 7; they made a new game that is hardly anything like 7 original. They follow the same plot and are rpg's, that's about where the similarities end.
    We dont need a remake of games that already exist, we shouldnt be feeding the greedy piggies any more money for lazy slop.
    We dont need ff9 remake, we didnt need halo remade, we didnt need metroid prime remade.
    Those games all exist, and if people would stop bitching about terraflops and graphics and just took games for what they are, especially so the further back you go, then they would see the gems are there, and would go play them.
    Ive got games from before 2016, so many that Ill never complete them all, and have to prioritize my favorites.
    Why are you all buying xbox series bullshits and playstation 17's? When hardly anything changes besides what gets GUTTED out of the next overhyped overpriced shitpile?
    Fucking 800 bucks for a new shit game playing machine.
    My n64 still works. My snes still works. My ps1 still works. All older consoles still exist and should work if you have them and took care of them, too.
    You are all getting fleeced, and it's a big reason that *I* dont get to play fancy new futuristic games, because YOU ALL BOUGHT THE HORSE ARMOR, and now publishers are content to put up half the actual game content while doubling the price!
    Fuck anyone who buys new systems or games without doing any due dilligence in research and trying to shovel their money at the good games publishers and devs.
    Sure; buy whatever you want. But if you care about games being good, if you really love the medium, then youd at least give half a shit about why games are so shitty these days.

    as it was such a great game all it really needs is a upgrade to newer graphics for the most part! that and update to newer animation quality and putting the dialog from text windows to voice acting! but other then that no need to change any thing else!
