It's always funny to see people on twitter claim they want lower budget, stylized games but didn't buy Octopath 2, Triangle Strategy, Bravely default 2, neo twewy and a whole lot more. I still remember when that Bayonetta origins game was first announced and my timeline was full of "who asked for this?" tweets.

@@Centrioless because remakes need to be advertised also as a normal game. they cant be made only for fans. like what is the chance that someone will buy a game second time when he/she already knows the story and knows how the game mechanics work. only hardcore fans will buy that. there are exceptions where original is so widely known and 'ancient' that the hype for remake carries the game into initial sales, but besides that, there is nothing that would otherwise boost the sales beyond advertising campaign.

You can say what you want about FF7 Retrilogy but you can't deny that it sells pretty good over the long haul and has good reception. Dead Space Remake was an issue because most people are pussies. @@mikev8746I think it also depends on whether a remake is needed. Persona 3 needed a remake to make it more accessible to the general populace. Regarding FF7 Rebirth's sales, I think many people simply can't afford or don't want to buy a PS5 just to play this game. I did, and I certainly enjoy the game, but it doesn't justify the over $600 I spent just to play it. I agree with your first point. I KIND of agree with your second, with caveats. I got FF7R because I needed a diversion from real life at the time...but that's not common nor consistent with me. I wont' be buying FF7R2 or FF16 when it comes to PC. I don't want to pay full price for a year (or more) old game after dodging spoilers for a year. So I just watched playthroughs of the games, engaged in theory discussions with people, and moved on. More and more people are going to do this until they stop the exclusivity. While I DO fully expect the PC release will sell more copies than the PS5 release did, I think it will sell LESS copies than it would have had it been released directly to PC.

The benefit for console is that they have only one baseline for settings to cater to, rather than a whole different host of settings that multiplatforming can do. And a game working well on one platform does not necessarily work well on all the others, even when those others may be objectively better. This has a lot to do with the engine the game was developed under, as several work well with console only and only one console at that. Had it been developed under an engine that works well across platforms, such as Unreal Engine, it would be much more likely to be multiplatform.
I have seen the cross platforming of games go badly too many times over the last couple of decades, even when a game was supposed to be released on multiple platforms from the start. And this isn't only a relic of the past, it still happens fairly regularly to this day.

The stinkers are necessary to an extent because they never really know when one of them is going to blow up into something that can be franchised: another final fantasy. But the video game market has gotten so bloated and expensive that there’s really only 4 models that are selling well, I think: the blockbusters like FF7R (remakes being a subcategory of blockbusters), the indy games that people pay 5 to 20 bucks for, play for a week and never play again, the MMORPG (FF14), and the pay to win PvP games like Brave Exvius and WOTV.

All they have to do is drop the exclusivity deals, and have all hands on deck to refine and polish games Like FF7Rebirth and KH4 with quality we've been starved of since the PS2 days. They had their era of "Do everything but make the games people want." Now they're saddling up and getting ready to return to the big hitters THE RIGHT WAY. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, and others. They have the means, they have the IPs, they have a functioning game engine, and they have the fans. That being said, what I was getting to was largely more cookie cutter yearly releases and pay to win economies in free and paid games (I'm fine with microtransactions as a concept, it's use can simply vary greatly from good to bad).
To be fair you also have Nintendo, who very well knows their games have long term appeal. Which is why they specifically limit the sales on their games (not speculation, they stated their 'evergreen' games have enough long term appeal and demand that they don't have to cut the prices down much). Make of that what you will.

@@RippahRooJizah First of all, there is NEVER a good use for the concept of microtransactions for what's supposed to be a finished product; first it was DLC then it was console based subscriptions just to play online and then microtransactions. I dread to think of worse - oh wait they tried with NFTs, thank goodness the world's brain hasn't rot that far. Yet.
Second of all when a game after twenty years still gets a mention and draws in a crowd for copies of the game as you appropriately mention, not ever dropping in value, you know you're in for a good time.
Most modern games are put on sale barely a year out of the box. Case in point - A copy of the original Silent Hill you could charge a hundred and people would pay it whilst the likes of the RE2 remake, is frequently going on the storefront discounts while most who played it once or twice will never look at it again, whereas it's original incarnation retains its worth. I remember back in 2020 that Remake basically had to save the company after the Avengers left a huge hole in their budget. Would they have done better by being multiplatform? Probably. Would they have recouped the much higher costs in money and time that come with designing for multiplatform unless they used an engine specifically designed for multiplatform use like Unreal Engine? That is harder to tell. And you have to consider the fact that their primary market is not composed of PC users and is, also, not us in the rest of the world. A Japanese company will make products primarily designed for the Japanese, even when said company has a global reach. Just as an American company develops primarily for an American marker. Any reach outside of that primary market is a bonus.

Thus they try to pander to what is "hip" at the moment, hence we get failures like foam stars, avengers, forespoken and babylon's fall.

I mean a decade ago their dev team struggled making a good game and it was never rated 90 +. They now have great capable dev teams and FF games have started reviewing well. Their sales aren't even bad and if you look at FF7R and FF16 they are already much better successes than the drama at launch people spelled out for both titles. It's just not selling insanely well. But really FF is all SE has. It's their biggest IP ignoring things like DS and KH. They have to double down on this somehow. Accepting FF7 Remake Series won't sell crazy numbers out of the gate but will achieve the company multiple set goals over the long term is the way to go.

Honestly I think the PS exclusivity is killing the hype big time. Maybe it was fine for the first game since it was on PS4 which had a huge playerbase + nostalgia. But having the 2nd game be exclusive on PS5 was a bad call. The Sony money better be worth it. IMO they should've had a huge FF7 Remake pc sale a good bit before FF7 Rebirth and then released it on all platforms. I bet it would sell a lot better that way. But who knows, maybe the Sony money is actually worth it.

@@paledrake I think the Sony thing helped with more than just money. Developer knowhow, marketing, platform focus etc. It adds up. But it also makes it tricky for them post launch if the numbers aren't insane. Again PS5 should have had 80 mil by now if the covid thing didn't happen. Maybe that would have made FF7 numbers look instantly better until the inevitable PC release. Again kind of like Remake. But even that game wasn't selling crazy. I remember the articles. Which is funny because apparently now it did 7 mil. So who's to say that after all 3 parts are released they don't all pull a respective 7-10 million. I'd say that it being stuck on PS5 at the moment is a big barrier. Releasing it on an exclusive console will result in lower sales numbers. And since there is such a long delay for it to be brought to other platforms (PC), many people just watch let's plays of the game for the story when it is exclusive and then don't see a point to buy the game years later and play it themselves when it is finally released on a platform that they want to play it on.
Resident Evil 2 Remake is a good comparison. Look at all of the platforms that game is on. It was released on PS4, XBox One, and PC in 2019, and then PS5, XBox Series X, and Switch three years later. That's 6 ways to play that game in 3 years. Remake has half that, and 2 of the three is PS4 and PS5. You are not reaching new audiences there.
If square wants their sales numbers to be higher, they need to stop this exclusivity stuff with PlayStation. It is only hurting them. PC version needs to be available at launch at minimum with XBox support coming quickly there after.

If they have really learned that lesson, excellent, they have started to go the right direction, if not, they will keep failing. Add to it that they still always have this unrealistic expectations about any game they release. If a game costs them 100 million, they expect it to be a billion to call it a success, even if they make 300 million in profit, they will assume it was a flop or at best a moderate success, and that has been their problem for more than a decade.

it didn't sell well though lol. Resident Evil 2 sold well. And not XVI is not a Masterpiece its solid but not a masterpiece. Rebirth is closer to a masterpeice and sold less.

RE 2 isn’t a good comparison due to it being a multiplatform game. But I would agree that a masterpiece is a bit of a stretch.

PC of course would bolster sales, but Xbox is NOTHING. Xbox fanboys since the beginning, since 2002, have been known as just Pew Pew Pew Shooter-types, so RPG games really gain no foothold on the Xbox platforms.

It sucks ff7 rebirth doesn’t deserve to underperform you see other companies putting out trash and they fail and a game that Comes out and is universally loved should be successful. It sucks other people can’t recognize a good game.

I was fed up with Nomura's typical Kingdom Hearts BS when the Time Jannies showed up.
Killed my interest in any sequels to a game that never should have been chopped up into 3 parts to be further cynically milked by the company.

@@sterlingdavis8244 you don’t have to like nomuras games that’s fine and it’s your opinion but my point is rebirth is quality and they are making it a trilogy because they wanted to expand the ff7 world more then what did in the og and doing that in one game would be impossible and I love the new games and I played the og recently and it just makes me more excited for the final game no matter what they do.

I'll say this and I'll stick with it. FF's biggest problem is no day1 pc release. By the 6 month of 1 year mark, the hype is gone even if the pc port is good, you lost that initial release hype. Good day1 pc releases would almost certainly boost sales

I look at this as a double edged sword. Yeah they're probably getting rid of some AA games that wouldn't have sold well, but I think a lot of their financial troubles have more to do with their overambitious AAA games than those. Way too many AAA games these days have bloated budgets that they cannot recoup and these companies need to get these budgets under control.
Maybe they should actually invest in more indie to AA games and keep the AAA releases to the series like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy that they know will sell well. Even then did 7R need to be 3 games. I get the feeling that stretching out it's development over 3 games and 15+ years is going to lead to large audience drop off by the time the 3rd game comes out that it won't be profitable in the end and they may at best break even with this project.
In my opinion it would have been better to do a more faithful single game remake instead, and I'm really hoping 9's remake is like that. Heck I kind of want that remake to be a AA game along the lines of the recent Mana games as well because it doesn't need to be as overproduced as 7R is especially since it's a much more cartoony game.

    - Stop talking about dumb sht like NFTs
    - Get rid of the internal bloat and politics inside your company, economics has proven if you get woke you go broke
    - Too many games being made at the same time with a majority of them getting little to no advertising

Yes this is good, but it's not that simple. The problem still remains: their larger games are not selling to their expectations. Rebirth is an example of a game that *should* have sold gangbusters, it did everything fans wanted, it was marketed very well, and gave gamers tons of value and content--YET it has not sold too well. Especially in a year that has not been the biggest year for top tier games so far, people should be flocking to Rebirth, at least for its open world and critical reception. But instead that is not the case. There are smaller reasons that could contribute to the lack of sales (people waiting for PC, not wanting to buy a sequel, etc), but there is no *big* reason and it's odd.

ALSO Yoshi-P title from “General Manager of Creative Business Unit III,” his position is now “Studio Head of Creative Studio 3.”.
i guess he really want to work on big game as a director not like FF16...
