"Looking back, Randy Moss was the best player in the game from the first day he arrived. We just didn't want to go overboard at the time incase it did not pan out" - John Madden
And that showed in Madden 99, where they gave Moss a 65 catch rating.
Factual
@@jdb2002 he is on NFL gameday 99 for the PlayStation but I think on there he has a higher rating.
sorry to be so off topic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Ayden Jackson Instablaster :)
Randy Moss killed us his rookie year. What a Hall of Famer.
Coolest Vikings player ever.
The moment you realize that both quarterbacks actually won Super Bowls.
Geez..life isn't fair, lol
@E. Love funny how these are 2 of the best defenses of all time
@@guileweaver1574 ikr! 😔😕
@@goddammitnappa1617 well, the Bucs wouldn't get that title until '02/'03, but they had a stacked one in '98/'99 indeed.

Having both CC and Moss is probably the one of the best WR duos in NFL history.
Has to be 2nd best after Rice and TO. Can't think of any other that's better.
Even CC and Anthony Carter or CC and Jake Reed -- Vikings had *already* had top receiving tandem for several years IMHO (before adding the greatest NFL talent of all time.)
And yet here we are still unscathed by the Super Bowl bug. Sometimes it's tough looking back on my 48 years as a fan and seeing the greatest defense, the greatest receivers, the greatest running back and yet nada. Such is life. Sammy White was my guy as a kid. Man, him and Rashad. It's been fun when it hasn't been soul crushing...
Lynn Swann and John Stallworth.
Monk, Sanders, Clark...."fight on fight on till you have won son's of Washington, RA RA RA!!!"
NOW THAT WAS A RECEIVING CORPS
Those clowns in tx with the star on helmet geographically situated incorrectly had a nasty groups of receivers, also........ Harper and Irving.
Miami had Duper and clayton.
But yes, Carter and Moss.....gotta admit, this redskins/commanders fan would have like to have seen that duo get a ring.
Not even counting Moss/Carter, this game had a ton of stars. From 1997-2000, RB Robert Smith was an absolute beast. Crazy, this game had Smith, Dunn, Alstott and Neal all in the backfield. Running Randall Cunningham started season as a Backup for Johnson (before leading them to 15-1 record). Tampa's Defense had Derrick Brooks, Lynch, Barber, Sapp. Nickerson. Minn had Robert Griffith, and John Randall the one man Sack Machine. Two SB winning QB's as well in Dilfer/Johnson. Awesome seeing this old footage!
The Vikes had a great backfield with Hoard and Palmer backing up Smith too and their receiver core was deep with Jake Reed and Matthew Hatchette behind Moss and Carter. The O-line was great too, one of the best rosters ever and they failed to win a Super Bowl. The Bucs great roster won a few years later and the only loss in the 15-1 season was to this Bucs team.
Mitch Berger was a great punter when he had the odd chance to show his stuff too!
Covid 1984 and boy could he kick the ball past the endzone. And this was well before they moved the kickoff up.
skooly nugenator right? That’s another way the new rules pussified the game. Most don’t even think about that.
Mike the superstar Morris long snapper is an underrated from those teams too. He had a talk show!
Robert smith was so underrated as a running back
I thought he was the singer of The Cure.
The NFC Central in the late 90s has two of the best running backs that both ended their careers to early. Dorsey Levens (Green Bay) and Robert Smith. It’s a bummer Smith decided to retire early and Levens had a bad knee tear.
@@tempest20000 Barry Sanders retired prematurely too.
Dion R wow. How did I forget Barry?
And over rated as an analyst and play by play guy
"We've got a star on our hands in the NFL, Randy Moss!"
What a disgusting act by randy moss
I'm not even a Vikings fan, but seeing that '98 team still feels like a punch to the gut (especially when Anderson MAKES his first field goal of the season)
The first TD catch by Moss was on the Madden 2000 intro!
As a Vikings’ fan, no player infuriated me as much as Mike Alstott did in those years. ‘Can’t anybody bring him down!?!?’ No. No they cannot.
Man we should have won that season. Most incredible football team I’ve ever seen and they played their worst game of the year when it counted...still a ton of fond memories.
Greatest receiver ever
Ur damn right it is best to ever do it 🐐
@@B-Tom He was called THE SCARIEST DEEP THREAT TO ENTER THE NFL SINCE BOB HAYES!!!!!!!!!!
@@dwightlove3704 y’all sound dumb The guy had one route a go route lol not a complete receiver scary yes complete no !!!! Jerry Rice was better !!! Shit I hate Terrell Owens but he’s got just the same if not better numbers than him.
But I can see most of y’all are Minnesota fans so your opinion doesn’t matter cause your bias
@@tonymullin6934 But it was that ONE ROUTE that put the ABSOLUTE FEAR OF GOD into DBs&Defensive Co-Ordinators on Sunday afternoon or Monday Night.I hope your not a fan of GREEN BAY if you are I can see why your critical of the man called by pro scouts the scariest deep threat to enter the NFL since BOB HAYES who also earned a living using the VERY SAME ROUTE in the '60s and nobody in Dallas complained anymore than ppl in Minnesota or New England complained about Moss.
I was gonna make a highlight of this game for my channel, but my footage was pretty bad. Glad to see the cleaner, much better looking version from the official NFL archives! Don't hesitate to revisit the '98 Vikings again soon!
Revisit the choking. As a 49ers fan I certainly don’t know how it feels to choke,
@@jakesmith44 Kyle Williams
Gary Anderson,
Brett Favre in 2009.
4 superbowl losses in the 70s,
Started off 6-0 in 2003 and missed the playoffs.
This was back when opponents didn't realize single coverage was like leaving Moss wide open.
2nd TD both safeties were playing deep..not just deep enough😂
playing a single-high safety is leaving him open.
Triple coverage too 😅
Imagine any of the greats paired with Moss(other than Brady). Montana. Marino. Moon. Sheesh! Records that might never be broken.
Mike Alstott was a bulldozer back then💪
This game was when everyone realized Alstot was passed his prime.
Yea and he missed a couple key blocks
Yeah they had Alstott and Dunn in the backfield. Something even crazier, the backup fullback for Tampa Bay was Lorenzo Neal who would go on to have 4 Pro Bowls in his prime. BTW this was deff not when people thought Alstott had passed his prime (IDK if you were joking). It was only his 3rd season out of 11 in the NFL. Also, He arguably had his best year in 1998, and went to 5 straight Pro Bowls during, and after this season. Including two straight 1,000 all purpose yard seasons for a fullback, in 98 and 99 which is insane.
The good old days. Bucs need an offensive line now
"You're in safe hands with alstott"
Man he underthrew moss so many times lol. Moss was just so great at tracking the ball.
Yeah a lot of air on those balls too. Elway he ain't.
And of course Cris caught 2 TD's as well, all that man did was catch Touchdowns!
Best dollar the Vikings ever spent was on Carter.
Guile YES SIR! and the tip toes.
TD's and First Downs... CC was co good!
I was loving this throwback until I saw Gary Anderson trot out, which reminded me of how this season ended. Ugh. Still a gut punch two decades later.
So true.
Still feel the pain. This team against the Broncos could have been a classic Superbowl.
I wanna see Gary vs morten, now...1v1 winner keeps his leg and the name
I am a Raiders fan and I still feel that Comes team should have been in the Superbowl.
Enough Ripping on Anderson already. Moss and Denny Green and our Average Defense that Failed are bigger reasons as to why the Vikings Lost. Anderson made Over 100 Kicks in a Row!!! He Barely missed by about 8-10 Inches due to our guy Not Blocking Properly and him SLIGHTLY Over Compensating. Give that man a Break already!!! HOF'er If you ask me. Moss Dropped a Touchdown in the endzone and our Coach decided to Kneel!
This was before Randy Moss had a connection with Dante Culpepper in the old Metrodome. A Great Connection
Randle Cunningham came before Culpepper
Sometimes a QB like Marino makes average receivers look like stars. Moss made average QB's look like stars.
You are watching greatness. History at its finest. 2 hall of famers in one game and more!!!
Certified/late nite muzik there are definitely more than 2 hall of gamers in that game my friend
there will never be another randy moss one of a kind player and so cool he moon packer fan in playoff game randy moss have fun all the time throw ball up like rainbow it land in his hand he was the best
Jerry Glanville was such a goofy announcer but I think the NFL could use a little of that silliness these days. Too many color guys take it way too serious. Anywho, Randy Moss burst onto the scene like a bullet!
The greatest thing he did that immediately comes to mind is he called this QB "Mississippi" the entire time he played on the Falcons. I wonder what happened to this "Mississippi"?
This is that magical era that saw the sunset of the greatest QBs from my childhood ride out in to the sunset...but not before appointing a "Sherif" to keep the peace in the AFC East.
Peyton was the sheriff
I wanna see a player wear the single bar helmet like Gary Anderson in today's game
Miss Jerry Glanville calling games cause his commentary would always crack me up 😂
Glanville was kind of a jerk, but yer right, he could crack a good line.
And this was versus an elite defense lol. The most talented reciever ever!
in the rain in GB with Randall Cunningham throwing RM TD's on a string. Oct 98
that's when I said HS this guys a beast.
I still love watching #47 bring the hammer. Man could Lynch blow up a play!
When you realize both Dilfer and Johnson together have more rings than Brees, Fouts, Rivers, Marino, Moon and Kelly combined
Yeah but they were carried by 2 #1 defense Dilfer carried by the 2000 Ravens and Johnson the 2002 Tampa Bay Bucs they were mediocre QB that needed a defense to make em look like good Superbowl QB while Dilfer is still the worst starting QB in Superbowl History while Johnson had a decent Superbowl game still it showed once Dilfer was Cut and went to Cleveland, Seattle and 49ers and never won a starting job goes to show his mediocrity while Johnson went to Vikings again and Cowboys and finish his career 3-24 after the Bucs release him
Chris Santiago that was the point......
@@user-co1gi7yd2r that doesn't change the fact that the NFL is a quarterback driven league. Even when Dilfer and Johnson won, it was a quarterback driven league.
Brees won the super bowl wtf you smoking on?
@@thenewjord50 Well, Brees did win with Bountygate, if that means anything.
“Throw it up above their head... they can’t jump with me golly!”
Moss is the reason I became a Vikings fan. Love from Jamaica 🇯🇲 💪🏾
NFL Throwback could you guys post Calvin Johnson’s first game? (2007 Lions @ Raiders)
John lynch had some Dawkins type hits
Lynch is overrated in my opinion. Why does everyone think he’s so great? He wasn’t the best Saftey in the NFL in the 90s. I’d say both LeRoy Butler and Steve Atwater we’re both better safetys. Butler was a ball hawk and Atwater was a tank and both have better stats than Lynch. Butler had more INTs and Sacks and Atwater had more tackles and Super Bowl rings. I just don’t understand why everyone thinks Lynch is so great.
@@tempest20000 Butler, Atwater, and Carnell Lake were all better. That said Lynch was good, but he's better remembered because he's stayed in the public eye, whereas the others have retired and been pretty quiet since.
James Sullivan true. But that’s why I think they’re better. They don’t pump their own chests and make unnecessary noise. They were true competitors and great men.
Yea...back when you could hit...we are now headed into 2 hand touch now that your body weight cant come down on QBs..miss the old days.
@@tempest20000 😂😂😂all the man said was he had some big hits you must really hate Lynch huh
Great video. And an added bonus was to see Korey Stringer so many times. He was an amazing young man....
The Bucs had BOTH Mike Allstott and Lorenzo Neal in 1998, blocking for Warrick Dunn! That and their great D is why they could afford to have Dilfer as QB
They missed the playoffs this season
Dilfer has as many rings than any other QB from both teams combined.
What bout Randy Moss Thanksgiving game against the Cowboys 👌

Best player on the field in your very first game -- that is really saying something
The Bucs gave the Vikings their only loss that year in the regular season when they played in Tampa.

Great Bucs defense

I miss those uniforms. I have one. I love the yellow trimmings outside the numbers. And that purple. Unforgettable season.
3:45 this touchdown marked the birth of one of the top 3 best WR’s of all time.
Warrick Dunn looked like a third-down back, and he could catch. He ran outside like a tailback, and inside like a 225 lb. power back. I don't think he gets enough credit.
This feels like it was just a couple years ago. That Tampa defense was really, really good. For the Vikings to put up those numbers on that team was a bigtime statement.
Im sitting here watching the game - oooh'ing & awww'ing- like i dont know the outcome.. That tipped Moss TD always gets me, i see it so much, its on nearly EVERY highlight montage on espn or nfl network. We got our revenge, but still.

I love how he jumps into the crowd after that first TD. He's telling all them "I got this for a few years, yall..no worries."
Randy Moss’ career is born
I have been to less than a dozen Vikings games in my life. This was my first. That bobbling catch was so close to me. It's branded into my memory like no other play.
Many current NFL fans in this generation forget or don't realize just how powerful and untackable Mike Alstott really was. When in takes almost half of an opposing defense's Front 7 to bring him down sometimes even on short yardage plays, that's a sign of a very powerful player. It was like grown men trying to tackle or reign in a huge black bull insane with hunger.
Best channel on RUclips 👌
Best WR of all times period…….

Still my favorite of all time straight fuckin beast

Jerry Rice threat-level not even comparable to Moss, not even close, like, not the same zip code, how TF can anyone claim so with the a straight face? Moss zoomed through & soared over secondaries to levels never seen before or after.
Jerry wasnt fast, but he ran insane routes and was almost always open. that's about the same threat level, just not a deep threat
@@rileymcmonigle9614 From an economics perspective, Moss's impact far bigger than Jerry Rice. 1 non-qb player isn't supposed to dictate the defense that much nor is he supposed to be so automatic chunk play/TD if they isolate them. It's like comparing a queen to a knight in chess. The knight is effective but at the end of the day, it sure af isn't the queen.
@@patrickreusch6914 that's very true, honestly havent watched enough of Randy Moss' games to be certain. I seem to remember he had a few bad years before he became a patriot, a decline like Jerry Rice never really experienced.
Rice played hard every Sunday, Moss did not.
@@feddyvonwigglestein3481
If Moss had the same work ethic, people would acknowledge him as a top 3 of all time like they do with Rice.
"Miss this field goal Gary, or your family dies"
only explanation for his miss against Atlanta. Dude was automatic. He would walk away immediately after kicks. I'm still butt hurt about the loss. I remember this was the first year I watched the Vikings. I was 12 years old and just got into football. Best and worst year all at the beginning. Can't even fathom how it wasn't just a blow-out all year. Man. Imagine the cred the Vikings would have, had they won it all.
Great games back then 8n the Metrodome . Moss, Carter, Reed, Smith, Cunningham. McDaniel, Steussie, Christy, Dixon and Stringer atleat 700 lbs of beef. David Palmer awesome returner, Randle, Ed Mcdaniel, Edwards, Rudd super fast crew. And a hard hard hitter secondary. Great team.
Johnson's first deep throw to Moss down the right sideline...he threw it a full two seconds late. Fact is, after Johnson's shoulder injury, his arm wasn't strong enough to overthrow Moss. Even on the TD pass down the left side, Moss had to stop and wait for the ball to catch up. That's what 4.23 seconds in the 40 looks like. We'll probably never see that combo of speed, size, vertical and talent again at wide receiver. Moss didn't pile up as many yards as some, but he was the ultimate CB's nightmare.
Watching this both teams were dam good
Please do Patriots vs ravens 2007, include when the announcers say "Is tonight the night" after the ravens first touchdown

Good ole' fashion ass kicking.
What is Weird is BOTH QB's in this game would go on to win Super Bowls for different teams just a few years later, Trent Dilfer 2 years later for the 2000 Ravens, and Brad Johnson 5 years later for the 2002 Tampa Bay Bucs. 1998 Minnesota Vikings one of the ALL time great teams fails to win a Super bowl, yet in this game there were 2 SB winning QB's on the same field.
