I heard that when the Vikings got the ball first in OT, Reaves was surprised at the conservative play calling. When Atlanta got the ball he told QB Chandler that the Vikings were playing "not to lose" and to go out and win the game.
Atlanta falcons were not supposed to be in this game they were supposed to be humiliated embarrassed stomped on destroyed annihilated but it didn't happen Minnesota Vikings tough loss their toughest loss ever I'm proud of my Atlanta falcons for pulling this one out unfortunately we stunk up the joint in the super bowl the following week against Denver
@gregory this game was such a thrill to watch on that Sunday afternoon so long ago. I'll never forget that moment the FG went thru in OT when I sprayed beer 🍺on my friends. The celebration lasted all thru the AFC Championship game that was up next.
wow, never realized until today the winning field goal was from Anderson 39 yards out on the same field goal post that vikings Anderson missed from the same distance that would have won the game. poetic.
That was on a 3rd down too. Run a draw. If you don't get first down make Falcons use final timeout and punt. Even worse Vikes got ball first in serving half.
Also on the drive that ended with the missed field goal, Robert Smith went out of bounds with 4:32 to go. They could’ve drained the clock a lot more, and given Atlanta the ball with less time remaining potentially; even if they didn’t score on the drive.
@@dirtybirdambrose yea and the one turnover cost the Vikings due to the situation. They were about to go up three scores at the half and turned it over. Falcons took advantage and scored a touchdown, keeping them in it. Yes turnovers are part of the game. And some turnovers are more costly than others. Like this one.
And with a sore knee. He should of have not played the last couple of series but he said the heck with it. This is for the right to go to the Super Bowl.
Joe Buck get absolutely crucified for that.....Summeral was emotionless too......Listen to the call when Giants ( the team he played for btw) absolutely nothing...
What is it about you people from the modern era that feel this need to disrespect and downplay what came before your time? Summerall and Madden were the standard for BIG game NFL football commentary. Just because you don't prefer there more subdued and conservative way of calling the game or analyzing it, doesn't make them bad at what they did. Madden forgot more about football than any of these present game callers have learned. They had there own way of commentating the game. Just like Brent Musberger, or Keith Jackson or Marv Albert or Gus Johnson. Disrespecting certified legends in the booth is pointless!
As a Georgia native and Falcons fan, I hurt for the Vikings at the end of this game. The Vikings were the best team in the NFL, without question. The Vikings beat themselves in this game.
I remember this game in the 1998 season.I couldn't believe Minnesota lost which i dont know how.Eventually the Falcons went on to lose Super Bowl XXXIII.I wondered if the Vikings would of beat the Broncos but i doubt Denver would of beat the Vikings too.Atlanta is 0-2 in Super Bowl play.Falcons also lost Super Bowl LI to the Brady and the mighty Patriots.Atlanta will probably eventually win a Super Bowl.
It’s kind of hard to keep track of how many different ways the Vikings BLEW this game. If they had eliminated just one of those, the Super Bowl would have been a classic. Instead, we watched a blowout.
Vikings had so many chances to put the Falcons away. It was 20-7, they got freaking greedy. That turnover changed the momentum of the game. When the NFL uploaded the game in its entirety I also noticed that Jake Reed was inactive for this game, what happened?
I don't understand why everyone thought this was such a big upset. Instead of building it as a heavyweight match, they immediately made the 14-2 Falcons (one less win than the Vikings) seem like a David and Vikings like a Goliath.
The Falcons had absolutely no experience in the playoffs while the Vikings had a ton. The Falcons also just assembled their team while the Vikings had built up their team for years.
The noise in the dome is one of the major things people were worried about. Coach Reeves had that team practicing with simulations of the crowd noise. The Falcons didn't commit a single penalty due to noise.
Andersen beats Anderson. Summerall and Madden were such an awesome broadcast duo. They did kind of "jinx" Anderson there, though (if you believe in that kind of thing). Ironic since Summerall had been a kicker himself. I feel bad for Dennis Green. The Falcons were not who we thought they were.
I think the falcons paid for all their luck in this game for during the Patriots Superbowl. 😂 The vicking wete far abd away a way better team that year.
From the first half you would've thought going into half time that Vikings got it. They looked on fire
The best NFC championship game ever played!!
The 1998 Vikings are the only team in the Superbowl era to start the 4th quarter with a lead in every single game..
A lot of Playoff and Superbowl-related pain shared by these two teams.

According to a newspaper clipping in the Dorktown series on the Vikings, Dennis Green didn’t realize he had timeouts.

John Elway and the Broncos against the Vikings in that years Super Bowl would have been epic. But we will never know.
Yes, this was a great win for the Falcons but it robbed us of a great potential Super Bowl matchup. Kind like the 1994 AFC championship did.
Couldn’t agree more. The Falcons had no business being in the Super Bowl, and they proved it by losing ugly to Denver.

Why was it dubbed David vs Goliath? Minn had a historic offense. And name one other player on Falcons besides Jamal Anderson?
