Atlanta Falcons beat the Philadelphia Eagles 14-13 at Fulton County Stadium in the 1978 NFC Wild Card Round which was the first playoff game in franchise history.
I remember that following year Steve Young went out with a concussion against the Cardinals and that ended his career. The 49ers ushered in the Jeff Garcia era and although he put up good numbers they missed the playoffs the next 2 years and not having Garrison Hearst healthy really cost them in 99 and 00. When he was healthy in 2001 they bounced back with a 12 and 4 record and a trip to the playoffs. After the 2000 season Jerry Rice left for the Raiders.
I hate how this Falcons team gets disrespected in hindsight. They were 14-2 that year, the same record as the Broncos, and they beat the--at that time--greatest offense ever to exist, Vikings or not. But with hindsight, they would have you believe they were some 10-6 or 11-5 team that got lucky. The Vikings had several chances to win that game, not just with Gary Anderson's missed kick, but they didn't. Jamal Anderson led the NFC in rushing that year and would have led the league had it not been for TD's 2k season. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my opinion. Have a Happy New Year.
It's a not great schedule, but this team was loaded. They had a great defense, a pretty good offense, and they had morten andersen as their place kicker
This game would’ve been so much different without the Hearst injury but that call on the backwards pass did almost as much to level the playing field for the 49ers that I’m not sure it would’ve changed the result
What's up with all those Young Ints tho?? Ur right Hearst would have alleviated some pressure; maybe Young wouldn't have forced those balls. They still should have won! Now I remember why I couldn't stand jamal anderson. That stupid dance. Glad he never won shii 💍 🤣
I remember this game. So many memories. Wife went to Florida to see a dying friend and her family who are originally from Atlanta. My family are long suffering Falcon fans. I was already feeling tears coming when Talley made that stop. Then that INT to seal it. Wife called and she was in tears and the friends too. SF, hate it Hearst got hurt, but we had that game.
I remember that injury like it was yesterday. Worst feeling in a game I've had until last year when Brock Purdy got injured. I believe both games would have turned out differently if not for those injuries.
This game (along with Steve Young’s injury a few games into 99) marked the end of an era for San Francisco. They had a win percentage on par with Alabama from 1983-1998 (which essentially encompass Montana and Young’s primes), and then in 1999, they fell off a Cliff after Young got hurt. They had two good years with Jeff Garcia before sucking for most of the 2000’s.
I always liked Tim Dwight!...I also always thought Dan Reeves didn't get the respect he deserved....he lost 4 Super Bowls yet so did Marv Levy and he's in the HOF.
Game was decided on the 1st play. Hearst had 2100 all purpose yards in 98 & was the engine of that offense. 49ers would've missed the playoffs without him.
This game ended on the first play. That was such a heart breaking injury.😢Especially after the emotion from the week before with Owens. Owens. Owens. 😂
Kirby did have possession and he was down. I’m not sure what the controversy was about. Maybe because the officials made two different rulings on the same play. I’ve never seen that before.
Steve Young with another playoff game making critical mistakes. For as great as he was he just wasn’t a good playoff QB (aside from the super bowl vs chargers).
Was lowkey the Aaron Rodgers of the playoffs of that era. Outside of the Super Bowl win over the Chargers, he was average to above average in the playoffs.
These teams played three times that season, with the Falcons scoring 71 points and the 49ers scoring 68 points. Can't get a whole lot more evenly matched than that in 180 minutes of football.
San Francisco in 98 was the end of an era. After winning it all in 81, and a 3-6 1982, the Niners had 16 straight winning seasons from 1983-1998. Then Steve Young gets hurt, they were without Garrison Hearst in 99, and the defense which was decent but aging in 98, fell apart in 99, and they finished 4-12.
With the exception of the delightful player and human being Warrick Dunn, Jamal Anderson influenced me always preferring the bruising back that can break tackles over a small elusive back. I absolutely loved having Michael Turner bulldoze players in Atlanta for several years.
I kind of say that more of 2016 than 1998 since we were just 57 seconds away with just one stop on the two point conversation. The second loss can only be washed out with a short term dynasty such as winning consecutive Super Bowls or winning six or seven Super Bowls in a single given decade. One Super Bowl will not cut it unless we run it back the very next year.
@@Shawn6751 In my book, 2016 was a bit better, and definitely more of a missing ring because they came closer to actually winning. But 98’s team was more well rounded. 98 had an offense and defense that were both top five by points, whereas 2016 had a number one offense, but only the 27th ranked defense. I’m sure in 1998, fans of the Falcons were thrilled to see their team even make the big game after never getting to a conference championship game prior.
Same as well. Like I saw the caption that they're doing us a favor of not showing it but when Alex described it, I winced. Then when I came here to look at it, I thought when the play happened, I thought it didn't look that bad until i saw the replay. No wonder one of the play-by-play announcers said don't show it again
Said it in a couple of replies, but BOY there's a good reason the Secret Base crew decided to omit the clip of that injury from their documentary. I mean, *Jesus*. It almost looks like his foot's getting sheared off. I'm not quite seeing what Alex was talking about w/r/t Hearst's other foot getting "stuck" in the turf, though. It more looks like the turf was slick and he landed at an awful angle while trying to correct.

Ladies and gentlemen, we got ‘em

the Madden curse getting Garrison Hearst
This was really the end of an era for the 49ers. Tough way to go out with Hearst.

With all due respect, record aside, the Falcons did not have the depth or overall talent to keep up with the Broncos.
@@TheAnxietyCloset And it showed in the Super Bowl, naturally, but my point is it's a shame they are so overshadowed.
@Fries Agree with everything ya say. All we can say is the Vikings totally screwed that up XD
@Fries Could not agree more. Always sad when the championship game is more exciting than the Super Bowl.

Womp womp keep crying falcons won fair and square and they would have won with or without Hurst
That lateral fumble is just one of many plays that justified bringing back instant replay.
They seriously went out of their way to try to screw Atlanta on that one.
What are you guys talking about? Kirby literally jumped on the ball and got touched by a falcon. How the hell do officials not see that?!?!?
@@johnnybegood5178 You mean he didn't figuratively jump on the ball?
@@johnnybegood5178😂😂 Are you really that dense? He never came close to possesing the ball. It wasn't an incomplete pass, it was a FUMBLE!
This was painful to watch due to Garrison's toe got stuck on the turf
I was at this game - the Georgia Dome could get pretty damn loud back in the day.
Steve Young really shit the bed

It seems as though anyone who has Atlanta on their resume is automatically discounted somehow
I was up north in the day room watching this game .. Memories boy
Man Garrison Hearst getting hurt really messed us up this game
Such an exciting year. My mother and I enjoyed this season.

Wild watching refs blow calls all the time in these old games
the nfl is rigged, stop being so naive
Falcons had some ballers on defense Corneilious Bennett, Chuck Smith, Ray Buchanan and Eugene Robinson
Hearst don't get injured we win the superbowl...
If the refs don't try to keep the game close by wiping Atlanta's clear TD off the board for the 21-0 lead SF gets blown out in this game.
I wouldn’t go that far, not sure if they beat Minnesota.
I said that in 98
Remember that game on a Saturday! Great memories!!
That was a gruesome injury to Hearst
Injuries are part of the game....back ups are there for a reason.
Game was decided on the 1st play. Hearst had 2100 all purpose yards in 98 & was the engine of that offense. 49ers would've missed the playoffs without him.
Steve young cost them this game 2 bad ints but they wouldn’t of won Super Bowl without Hearst

Yes but the 49ers would’ve lost to the Broncos. I’m a 49ers fan myself and that 1998 Broncos team was nasty.
