Hard to believe Favre never got back to the Super Bowl after this. Everyone thought this was the real Super Bowl but my Broncos showed up 2 weeks later.
I Miss these Packer teams of the 90s, we seemed unstoppable back then and going into a game as a fan we had confidence knowing the Pack would handle business. This was the last year that we would dominate the 9ers in the playoffs (3yrs in a row). The year after we would face this same team in SF and a last min TO catch for the win, would end our reign in this decade and we were never the same after that. Fast forward to present day and it looks like the 9ers have gotten their Vengeance on us and then some.......how the tables have turned!
Yeah but it doesn't hit the same we could never beat that Packers team. Completely different players and different eras. For whatever reason that niners just could not match up well with the 90s Packers. My lean is towards coaching and just slightly better players in key positions that neutralized any advantage 49ers had. We had throttled the broncos earlier that year and feel we could have beaten them 😂. Sometimes football can be a little bit like boxing styles make fights and they could never figure out the packers. That last game was controversial don't really count it.
In the 90s we were owned by Dallas but destroyed the 49ers. Essentially ending their run at another dynasty. Now it’s flipped, we own Dallas but can’t get passed the 49ers. The good news is, the 49ers or the Cowboys can’t do anything either. So it’s a partial win.
The Pack's last NFC Title game appearance until 2007. This would be San Fran's last Title game appearance until 2011. This game also marked the beginning of the Niners' decline.
And then the Packers decline starting a couple of weeks later against the Broncos. The Packers weren’t dominant anymore. They had some success in the early 2000s but didn’t come close for a while.
Niners couldn't beat the Packers. This game definitely hurt watching a young kid. As good at the 49ers where for nearly two decades they sure lost a lot of games in the playoffs at home.
When sf lost its 3rd straight playoff game to gb here they were so weak I never would’ve thought the franchise eventually have the lead in the playoff rivalry 5-4 (after winning @gb in the ‘21 season)
This was one of those "not as close as the score" games - the Packers were dominant. Only some good redzone D by the 49ers kept this from being 31-3 instead of 23-10. There was no point where it felt like San Francisco was actually in it.
I remember being so pissed they got that dirtball touchdown on special teams. Even so, it was an awesome Monday at school. Just wished they took care of business against Denver.
Green Bay was to San Francisco at this point what San Francisco had been to Dallas in 1995 and what Dallas was to Green Bay in 1996...dominant. That was the triad of power in pro football in the mid 90's.
Yep. The Big 3 of the NFC. Dallas could beat San Fran and Green Bay. San Fran could beat Dallas and Green Bay, but Green Bay could only beat San Fran, and lost to Dallas 3 years in a row. All of them won a Super Bowl after beating one another.
@@justinturley7071 You just tried to say San Fran could beat Green Bay, but only Green Bay could beat San fran. Wtf are you talking about? The only time SF beat GB was the Owens catch. Outside of that GB smashed SF every single time.
What I find interesting is that stylistically, the Packers were a much better matchup for Denver than San Francisco. I honestly think San Francisco whoops Denver in the Super Bowl if they had played. But much like 1995 with Dallas, Green Bay took 'em out before they had their chance.
This is definitely the best packer team that never one a super bowl and it is not even close . They got real cocky vs Denver who I think were 14 point dogs and Denver deserves all the credit in the world. But for Younger packer fans who think 2014 04 2021 or 2022 were bad this 1997 team makes them all look bad believe me they were as dominant in all three phases as a team could be.
It was a great team. Still baffles me how quickly they fell off after losing to Denver in the Superbowl. I thought that team would be in contention for several more years
We definitely got cocky. We went up 7-0 and I thought we would route the Broncos. Then the wheels came off. Hats off to Terrell Davis and John Elway. They earned it.
Not having Garrison Hearst at full strength made Young have to throw too much in this game. Not having Jerry Rice was also problematic from an offensive standpoint. No one could cover or tackle Antonio Freeman (who not so elegantly labeled the 49ers “The Sunshine Boys”), making a dig at them as being a soft team. The ‘97 Niners team overachieved on defense, but just like the two years prior, faltered down the stretch.
As a Niner fan this was another heartbreaker. I thought that ‘97 team was a team of destiny but the Packers were still better as they proved this game.
I remember watching this as a die hard Niners fan back in the day. I was so depressed that the Niners just could not beat the Packers (even in the regular season too). Fast forward to Harbaugh. The Packers could never beat Kaepernick and Harbaugh. Fast forward to Shanahan and Jimmy G. The Packers could not beat Shanahan (they did in the regular season game at Levi’s, but not in the postseason). It’s interesting how sports ebbs and flows throughout the years. I expect the Packers to have the Niners number in the future (we don’t know when though lol).
Man it seems to me sanfran never goes threw a rebuild period yeah they may have some off years but they never have really finished horribly. They seem to always be in the playoff superbowl hunt that's how you run a organization
Green bay was a great team who would come up short in their bid to repeat in what was a fantastic superbowl that seemed shocking. Denver was door matted in every sb they ever played in and that game seemed like a foregone conclusion. Terrell Davis and Denvers great oline manhandled the pack and made the GB defense literally quit.
Never understood why the packers were such a huge favorite. Denver matched up very well, and had a MUCH better running back. The result shouldnt have surprised anyone.
I like that last touchdown by the Packers, you could see on that play that they had broken the 49ers' will that day. Then everyone celebrates while their white jerseys are covered in mud and you can hear someone shouting HELL YEAH BABY. Lombardi himself would shed a tear at how beautiful it was.
This season the 49ers would probably beat everyone except this Packers team. They were our kryptonite for a few years there. Although that year felt like the 94 season again it was a little damping with the teams the Niners played that year. Also Jerry Rice was hurt so to win the championship that year would be bitter sweet. What I can say is that 49ers team was a bit overrated and the Packers showed that.
Troy Aikman & the Cowboys in 1992, 1993. Brett Favre & the Packers in 1995, 1996, 1997. The Dirty Birds (Atlanta Falcons) in 1998. They prevented Steve Young and the 49ers from winning more Super Bowls.

I am a 69-year-old Packer fan, and it is easy to believe. Come the playoffs, he threw interceptions too often.

You could tell the Packers game plan was to throw early and attack the 49ers CBs and it worked, it never felt like the 49ers were in this game
