I agree. Niners/Cowboys hasn’t been relevant in years and Niners/ Seahawks ended when Harbaugh was fired. They face the Packers every year in the playoffs they’re the Niners true rival
I had the same box of grass from lambeau Field, a few years a good friend who was a huge packer fan got killed in a construction accident and I placed my box of grass in the coffin.
It's still insane to think Desmond Howard almost had two punt returns for touchdowns in a row!!! I remember sitting with my dad watching this game, we were screaming and hollering that's for sure! What a game.
Young tried toughing it out but it wouldn't have mattered if he played Green Bay was just too good that year.... Two great free agent signings that year Desmond Howard and Andre Rison they played such a huge role
Several memories evoked----Favre's absolutely rocket arm. Sometimes he threw the ball so fast it was like it disappeared on camera. Edgar Bennett having the game of his life. Desmond Howard having probably the best post-season a punt/kick returner ever had. On the punt return for the TD, you can see a 49er LB closing in on him from behind only to be taken out by his own punter who made a useless attempt at a tackle. Later on the sideline the LB had to be restrained from punching the punter out.
They played on Monday night at Lambeau just a couple months earlier. 49ers did not have Steve Young for that game, yet it was much closer - 23-20 GB in OT… I flew in from where I was stationed in Europe to watch that in person. What a game, what a season.
The game that cost Seifert his job. Eddie D got fed up with yet another loss to former assistant Holmgren and the offensive ineptitude of this team. Eddie also considered removing Seifert after the super bowl win in ‘94 to promote Shanahan to HC in order to avoid losing him to the Broncos. Eddie then hired Mooch thinking he was going to be the Holmgren or Shanahan he let get away. Mooch did a pretty good job considering the chaos of the Niner organization from ‘98 on. But it was clear even in this game the Niners were on the decline even though they had a couple of good seasons after this. Seifert kept it very much like the Walsh 49ers for a few years but it was clear starting in ‘95 the organization was declining and this wasn’t the Bill Walsh 49ers anymore.
This might sound like a weird thing to say, but I think there’s a world where the Niners could’ve repeated in 1995. Consider that they were the two seed and thus played Green Bay in the divisional round. And that was after playing a regular season where Steve Young had been hurt and they started Elvis Grbac for five games (two of which to Carolina and New Orleans they lost closely). If Young starts, there’s a good chance they win both of those games and get the one seed. And Dallas and Green Bay would have faced off in Dallas in the divisional instead of conference championship game (and Dallas took that one), and if so, I’m taking the Niners over Philly in the divisional round, over the Cowboys in 95, and over the Steelers in the Super Bowl. The Niners had pretty good teams over 1995-1998 before falling apart in 1999, Green Bay had their number though obviously. But in 1995, I think there’s a world where they could’ve dodged Green Bay and won it all, whereas the years afterwards I don’t think you could argue that.
Notice that Desmond Howard was absent from the field on that special teams miscue at the start of the second half. As it turned out, he was still in the locker room changing into some fresh pants!
Yeah, Desmond said that he heard the whistle as he was walking out of the locker room to the field and he knew the 2nd half kickoff started. He got in trouble with Mike. Kind of a funny story now, but then it wasn't for Desmond then.
I remember ths game like it was yesterday...Young only lasted 2 series. Had broken ribs from tht td run the week prior against philly..We dropped 21 point before pulling it within 7...It was just greenbays year....Even if we had one I seriously doubt we would have gotten past Carolina in our next game..Tht team was really good tht yr too....Back when football was football!!!! T.O rookie yr and coach G.Seiferts last....
I was 12.. Just falling in love with football.. Begged my parents to rush home from the pet store just so I could watch this game. No regrets, I was becoming a man.
One of the worst mistakes (of many) SF made during that period. Marc Trestman was a complete joke as an OC and, while Loville sucked, there were no real moves made to fix that porous O-line. Timid Mariucci came in, never could draft, and well the results of that showed with the garish mid 2000's teams.

I've come to the conclusion that the 49ers lucked out in 93, 94 by Dallas playing the Packers instead of them . Because they just had the 49ers number and was a match up problem.

Green Bay always got lucky with injured 9er teams 😂 They wouldn’t have Won it all until Rodgers without literal lucky breaks. History’s funny like that
I don’t think the 49ers vs Packers gets enough respect as a rivalry. They meet in the playoffs a lot it seems.
Understand what you coming from with that back then Dallas aikman Irving Smith etc was more of a rivalry
