Edgerrin james was the true pillar of those late 90s-early 2000s colts offenses. Before he came, Peyton wasn't putting up big passing #s even with the legendary marshall faulk & harrison. Deion still went out there & played but i wish he didn't at the expense of losing his toes...everyone with sense knows deion was severely hobbled since 96 with turf toe. That wasn't the real prime time...no small or regular sized receiver was balling out on prime except Rice... it's only big body receivers like Sterling Sharpe, TO, Calvin Johnson who gave him issues.

The previous 7 years before this Deion was 1st team all pro outside of 1995 and that’s only cause he had injuries and only played 9 games. This year Deion was second team all pro and imo he won that award off of his last name. If anybody knows about Deion later years with Dallas he constantly had turf toe. In 1997 he started 12 games, 1998 started 11 games and 1999 14 games. This was Deion last year on the Cowboys.

    • @supersexysega

Constantly had turf toe isn't accurate. He hurt his toe in the 11th game of the 98' season against Arizona. He missed the last 5 games of the regular season.
In the offseason he got his toe repaired and missed the first two games of 99' rehabbing it. In 99' he had just lost a step.
Deion did have a habit of grabbing a groin, hamstring or anything else that would indicate discomfort when he got beat but this was a pattern throughout a large part of his career.

Had he passed through waivers unclaimed, he would have been able to sign a free-agent contract with any team and play during the season. However, on December 25, five teams (the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers and Tennessee Titans), placed waiver bids for him, with the Chargers claiming him by having the highest waiver priority. I was at this game in 99. Sanders came out and warmed up, taunting the crowd. When Dallas went back in the locker room before kickoff, Sanders stayed behind the rest of the team and WALKED around the entire field next to the fans signing autographs and chatting. Pretty classy dude who could back up his swagger. Wish he would have played for the Colts.

Deion is the best, but I remember this game. Hunter Smith caught him from behind on a punt return I believe, and Deion wasn’t the same since. Might not have been the reason, but might’ve done something to his psyche. No punter should ever hawk Deion.

Defenses rely on offenses caving to great corners. Saw it all the time with Deion, Sherman and others. They just never threw to them and the defenses knew they weren’t going to be challenged so it took that part of the field completely out of the game. The Colts here did some creative things to disrupt Deion, starting with that crossing pattern. They didn’t eat Deion alive but they didn’t let him get comfortable or into any kind of groove where he just took over the game either.
