- A train ride along the Rhine Valley from Cologne & Koblenz to Mainz, passing mountains, castles, vineyards, river boats and the legendary Lorelei Rock. More information at www.seat61.com/places-of-inte...
I filmed this from the old Cologne-Vienna EuroNight sleeper train, which in 2014 used older sleeping-cars with windows that opened, and it left earlier than it does now, so more of the Rhine Valley was covered in daylight. For that reason it was a better train to video from than most modern trains!
I rode that route in 1956 when I was on US Army leave. Amsterdam to Karlsrue, it was beautiful to a 19-year-old Texas boy. Loved the old smokey trains.
This ride is absolutely scenic. Can't forget the countless castles on the hilltop that I have seen
Best way to enjoy the Rhine valley is onboard one of the SBB panorama coaches in EC8/EC9.
I took the train from Mainz to Hamburg long long time ago. Thanks for refreshing my memories. Always be a fans of you.
Thanks to your advise, we did this in 2018 from Basel to Amsterdam after our river cruise. Great seeing it again.
The view in the journey is spectacular!
Great trip! We did the river valley in the opposite direction three years ago. Didn’t have time for a Rhine River cruise so I figured this route was the next best thing. Would love to stop in Koblenz the next time!
Great video, Mark. I love the way you edit videos. it inspires me.
Great video
Nice video!
Great video, thanks.
Mark does the best train journey videos on RUclips.
The classic railway along the Rhine Valley is one of Germany's nicest train rides. It's been by-passed by the modern Cologne-Frankfurt high--speed line which saves an hour, but I reckon it's worth the extra time to take the old route, and some IC and even ICE trains still go this way. See how to divert along this line, with travel tips, at www.seat61.com/places-of-interest/rails-down-the-rhine.htm
Loved it.
It's great to return to seat 61; it's been too long.
Newly subscribed - love the lack of voice and music. Truly allows one to consider things for themselves.
Great mike
I walk all this valey next to the river and is very beautifull from kolonia to Frankfurt
Very good
At Koblenz to Bingen on the trace of William Turner's famous Rhine journey. He painted some castles not exist but fit perfect to scenery.
Wow 👌👌
I felt like like I was speeding along the Rhine feeling high speed thrill.
makes me think of the book 'A Time of Gifts' by Patrick Leigh Fermor.
Meine Heimat St Goar im Rheintal
👍🚗🎥
greetings Mark... we have MISSED you..is this video a shortened one from the London to Vienna one done earlier/?
Yes - I wanted a video I could link to from seat61 to show the Rhine Valley section, so people could decide whether to take the slow route rather than go high-speed. I realised that sleeper video showed the Rhine Valley as good or better than any video I could go and take now from a day train, as the windows of those older sleeping-cars opened.
THANK YOU so much..the Rhine Valley section is indeed most beautiful...We will take this route based on your videos..we hope you are well..CHEERS! CodyJ
Mark Smith Hey sir! Good to be back! Y dont u make videos all parts of the year? Ybdont u make winter train videos?
I would prefer narration by your deep voice instead of subtitles. They obscure the view and there is not much sound.
Maybe he is self-conscious and doesn't like talking to a camera in front of others.
What was speed
I think 200 km/ h or 150 km/h , because German trains are fast and really fast .
