    I replaced ELac UB5's with the BR03's. Huge upgrade in sound. The UB5's sounded dead and restricted even with a 150 wpc in 4 ohms amp. The BR03's took me to a new level. The sound is exciting and I can listen to them all day with no fatigue. I found the bass to be quite strong down to 50 hz

      I still use my UB5's. They really sound better at louder volumes. The BR03 sound good at a wider range of volumes.

      My experience with UB5's were, they needed alot of power, and very compressed sound. I didn't hate them, but i didn't love them either. I now own these BRO3's, and Epos Epic 2s. They are both very nice sounding speakers!

    A very well rounded review. The speakers are amazing at their price point. Actually they are as good as speakers 3x's their price. They are forward and slightly bright, but paired with a Dynakit ST70 they really sing. Pretty wide soundstage with plenty of air between instruments. They do vocals, especially females (biologic not trans, sorry) quite realistically .I swapped out a pair of MBL 323's that cost a whole lot more years ago, and don't miss them. A very satisfying speaker all around!

      @@andreassouth1523 Hi, I don't think they're too crispy or bright... Their uppermids/highs are still on the warm side than B&W or KEF kind of speakers.
      Compared to Denton 80ths(I also had 80ths), they have slightly more tweeter OUTPUT, so they actually sound brighter than 80ths..
      But they're more balanced in tonality to my taste cause they have more extended bass.. So I sold 80ths and kept 85ths and I'm happy with them.

    Joe: I really like the graphs. One suggestion. Pick a speaker, any speaker that is flat and use that response as a base and use it to compare all new speakers to be reviewed. Say use the SVS Prime as a base, the public will kind of know how they sound and then as new speakers are measured they would serve as a comparison. Stereo review, Hirsch used to have a reference speaker to compare in the reviews.

    I absolutely love watching all these reviews. Sound is subjective, and it's very cool to see that you are not WOWd by these like so many RUclipsrs, including Z Reviews. Oddly enough, it looks like he does not care for ELAC at all, and loves the tone of these over Elac's by a long shot. I assume you like the opposite?

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 года назад +2

      I listen and I measure also. I believe a frequency response graph will tell you a good amount about the tonality of a speaker. It won't tell you everything, but it tells you a lot. That means the measurements help keep me accountable for what I say. It doesn't determine what I say, but if they're consistently at odds, there's an issue. It's ok if someone doesn't prefer a sound signature of a speaker as long as they're consistent. ELAC speakers have changed their sound signature over the years. If it's about not liking a particular brand, I would want to be more up front with that. There are probably brands I don't like based on how they do business, but I would say it straight away.

    Wow these rates below ub5. I trust you Joe. I'm still chugging along my Klipsch 280f. But have lately found my jbl studio 580 to be a pleasant easy to listen to speaker. The jbl atm have replaced my ub5 and my infinity beta 50. But they're all a bit different.

      It's also just my opinion. Someone else might put things another way. It also depends on the room, although I try to take that into account.

      @@dalestorie3726 I decided on the Dali ob 3, more suitable with the Marantz 6006. It looks better built than the Triangle, in my opinion. Triangle may also have a sharper sound, according to some, but I didn't listen to them.

    @Joe N Tell Could you comment on the question of importance of the speaker frequency response in situation where Denon Audyssey XT32 is used? I own older Triangle Color speakers, which look nice in the living room, but have way too strong high frequencies when in Direct mode. I am considering getting the Borea speakers to "solve" this problem, but the question is: if I am using Audyssey, which "fixes" high frequencies in the current speakers, does it make sense to change speakers and get presumably the same final result with DSP on?

    • @joentell
      @joentell  2 года назад

      DSP can do a lot to tame harsh treble. I'm a proponent of using DSP, but I don't think Audyssey Auto-EQ does a great job. If you have an AVR that can use MultEQ-X ($200), I offer remote calibration services (not cheap) where I manually calibrate the system based on your speakers in your specific room.

    Flat speakers are overrated. No one would actually want a flat speaker I don't think. You want one that can produce evenly but flat sound is not good sound.

    • @joentell
      @joentell  3 года назад

      Perhaps, but double-blind research from Olive and Toole from Harman suggest otherwise. People prefer a speaker with a flat anechoic frequency response, but it also has to behave off-axis. This translates to a better in-room response because the reflections are also more similar to the original source signal. If flat doesn't sound good, that would imply the source signal isn't good. It's typically the room that screws things up. So the debate is more about how to voice a speaker so it sounds good to most people in most rooms. Some people don't agree with Olive and Toole and they believe their method of designing a speaker is superior. I'm all for it. I want to try it all.
