I like this topic. Another way to distinguish Stage from Grade: Stage is only about anatomic location. You really don't need to examine the cells at all, just know where they are. Are they are only in their original location? Have they invaded locally? Have they spread to lymph nodes? More distant locations? Grading is any description of the individual cells, and can include appearance, mutations, mitotic activity, proteins they make or secrete. Sequence information is usually part of Grading, although this can contribute to subtle aspects of staging. Immunochemistry too is a part of grading. Both are important for clinical decision making, and sequence information is increasingly important.
