About 8 years ago my friend and I were bass fishing in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. We were fishing the shoreline and going back and forth using a trolling eclectic motor. When arrived there was a small boat on a lift with its motor running. It was about a 1 or 2 year old Merc 15 or 20 horse power and the guy had it far enough out of water that no water was peeing out the side of the motor. I thought about yelling to him but his house was 300 feet from the shore line. So we fished for about 20 minutes and the guy never came back down. We left to another spot. So buying a used engine is a crap shoot.
Have you ever heard a Commercial by John Sirpills around 2000 where he just sings Boatsa Boatsa Boatsa Boatsa advertising the Boat Chow? It’s hysterical! It should live on.
All great tips. One more thing you might want to check is spark especially if you can't see it running. I just bought a used motor without seeing it run. The seller told me there was spark and compression. It was cheap so I took a chance. It needed some work to get it started. The reason I bought it was for spare parts since I have the same motor. It may turn out to be a better motor than the one I have. When shopping for ANY used ICE equipment, bring a compression tester and spark tester. They're cheap. If it's a 4 stroke, you'll want to see it run since you can't check timing.
I have a 2005 25hp Yamaha two stroke man start runs good but hard to crank after it sets for a week or so carbs are spotless it's getting gas and fire compression is 90 over 89 cold new coils also any suggestions
John, Can you help me in determining if an F225-TRXD mid-section will accommodate a F225-TURC powerhead? My (TURC) is subject to the corrosion issue and found a mid-section. Same year and hp (04' 4-stroke, 225TURC). Mine is a 30" shaft, and the other is a 25", but I'll just swap over the adapter and shift rod. I'd appreciate your wisdom on this..
Hi John, I have a "rookie" question about the fit of an outboard. My transom is 20" from top to the Vee in the center of the hull. So I'd be looking for a 20" shaft on whatever motor I end up with. My question is, which plate is the cavitation plate on the motor? I see there's a smaller flat/horizontal plate, (sticks out towards the front of the boat) which is about 2" ABOVE the next, larger plate below it, (sticks out towards the rear of the boat) and is bigger than the one directly above it mentioned just now. In this video, you seem to touch/point out the upper plate when you're speaking about the cavitation plate,, is the upper plate the "cavitation" plate?.
Good video but. Testing with muffs or in a barrel don't tell you how it works under a load. I bought a motor that I knew didn't run. I changed the diaphragm in the fuel pump and the gas filter and hoses and bulb from the tank. It starts great, idles great and runs on fast idle great. I put the boat in the water and it started right up, backed off the trailer and started out into the lake. When I gave it throttle it died right down, I removed the cap from the tank and same thing. I have it home now waiting for a carb rebuild kit. Tank testing doesn't tell the whole story. Thanks for your video.
Hey Jon I got a question for you I have a 50 hp Honda four stroke 2012 run excellent can drive 10 hours with no problem omitted I come to an idle for at least five minutes I got a beeping sound it’s not overheating and oil pressure is good what do you think the problem could be thank you Also once the beeping starts if I shut the engine off and restart it the beeping goes away and comes back 10 minutes later
Hi i want to know how to compare the hours of a motor with "miles" lets say a motor has 500 hours from 50 miles an hour i get 25000 miles on it. is that assumption correct? thanks
There is no way to determine this but very few outboards in the world would average 50mph. Half that would be more accurate. Remember every journey starts with launch, idle, low speed away from the ramp. And not many boats can even travel 50mph
This was really helpful. Thank You!
Putting it into gear whilst on the muffs is a good test
Thanks my friend. Clear, sequenced information. Looking for a kicker right now, so this is timely for me
Great tips. Do you also have videos of what to look for, when inspecting a fiberglass boat?

It's the lower plate. He touched the wrong one.
