this whole build is so satisfying the 996 finally getting what it deserves
100%
Thank you!
Painting the back of the Amp black might the move. Additionally, your air hose gun the best interior tool for under seat. And a light mist of window cleaner goes a long way for cleaning vents and other plastic seams. Just remember to tape the metal tip. 👍
Check out the 996 factory bose subwoofer. Tidy unit that sits on the rear tray. You could get one and wire it into your amp.
The little plastic cowls, lights, re-wiring, vacuuming and cleanup were all very satisfying. Thanks for the content!
Glad you enjoyed!
This looks so clean, loved the conversion and getting rid of those old messed up wiring is so satisfying!
Great work man. I’m impressed. One word of advice for an owner of 11 years… always leave the frunk popped when parked in your garage. On a tender, there’s that too. And I eventually just removed the frunk light bulb all together. All of these things will prevent headaches.
I have decently easy access to the cable release just in case.
When I was modifying my 997 turbo one of the first things I did was move the emergency pull cables so they were accessible if the battery died.
On my 996, I routed my battery tender connector to under my cowl cap. I can plug in my tender without opening my hood. It did require trimming a hole in the cowl, but it doesn’t show even with the hood open.
Damn bro. I wonder if the previous owner is aware of this channel and just looks at all the half assed shit he did with this car 😂😂
LOL would be a great conversation!
I have that Atoto head unit in my 01’ turbro, too. A lot of bang for the buck. It’s nice because I tether my internet from my phone’s hotspot, and once they’re paired I don’t have to touch the phone again. Telephone contacts and calls, Waze, Spotify and all other apps are run through the head unit display. Your car is coming along great. It’s fun to watch the progress.
Yea it’s a great unit, thanks!
Hey Mat, the replacement of your head unit, together with the upgrading of the amp & sorting out that mess of wiring is very impressive.... Utmost Respect!👍👍
Wish I had your courage to tackle/upgrade rhe head unit on my 997 Carrera 4S back in the day......the original unit looked so dated!
Give it a try, well worth it!
As others mentioned, I like that you also show the mess you make and the cleaning up after the job, sometimes cleaning the garage takes as long as the job itself lol.
Great stuff, looking and now sounding like a great car again!
Thanks! I try and keep this real and fun!
For the key fob - you could install an automatic starter, a lot of them include lock/unlock. Not oem but would give you the functionality
Damnit Matt, so you finally got me on board as a subscriber. Enjoy your videos and wry sense of humor. Anyone who's smart enough to wash the girlfriend's car while attending to his toys must be a good dude. I've even been going back and watching all the truck content. Keep up the fine work buddy!
Thanks for the sub finally! lol
You should put a little black vinyl wrap over the silver exposed part of the amp. It would clean up the look a lot.
Not a bad idea.
Huge progress made in this episode... the 996 is looking mighty fine and sounding it too I imagine.
This has become my favorite build on youtube. Great project. Keep it up.
So kind, thank you!
Frunk and engine compartment are connected, if ones open both lights are on, on my 03
Ah, makes sense!
great video. the 996 should be able to take a cigarette lighter plug adapter for the tender if your hood gets stuck. also plastidip or vinyl wrap the bottom of the amp to black :)
Montage of clearing under the cowl with air hose made me lol. You should redo the 2 zip ties for your tender. Start from underneath and then up and over. Won't see the knuckle of the zip tie ;-)
I thought about that afterwards lol
You should get with Larry from Drive and Protect to do a detail and take it to the next level…a little cross promo for your channel. Nice work!
19:13 the underside of the wing mirror is hanging off !
Yes I need to affix that again.
I had a pioneer sub which is supposed to go underneath the seats, but i had it wired in behind the passenger seat snug fit wedged vertically, bass was amazing and filled the cabin perfectly as its only small, but you have a lot more room it being a 911 and 4 seater, 8 inch subs do the job great!
Very nice transformation.
love it. All those wires is overwhelming to me. God for you doing this!
The only thing I would be concerned with is the amp not getting enough cool air and possibly overheating. Awesome video as usual. Thanks
Time will tell
Greate job!
I would have installed the amp backwards, where the top black cover is revealed and not the back metal one.
Not a bad idea.
Great video and awesome progress, I noticed the driver side exterior mirror bottom needs some attention but other than that great job!
Replace the factory speakers with Focal speakers. If you still want more bass I would recommend getting the factory Bose sub box for mounting and use a JL Audio sub.
Do you know which Focal speakers specifically?
@Matt Ross at this point I don't anymore. I have only sort of kept up with the audio world in recent years (basically keeping track of the top brands for sound quality but not what specific models from them). If you asked me 10 years ago I could have broken down the specific models for component speakers, Amp, and subs but after getting my vehicles broken into twice to steal my ridiculous over the top sound systems I backed off. Honestly I'd recommend going to a local audio shop specialist and talking with them about a recommended setup for what you are looking for. They will put together the ideal setup for you. And from my experience when you buy a package instead of just a single item if you simply ask them what the best price they can do is they will give you up to 25% off. Just make sure you go to a shop that sells products from places like Focal and JL Audio...not someplace like best buy lol. And after the discount it's typically cheaper through them than it is to go through someplace like Crutchfield.
Get a Kicker HS10 Underseat sub they are really good and will sort out the bass without going over the top.
agreed, i had a pioneer 8 inch underseat sub, which i fitted behind the passenger side in my 986 boxster and was really bassy and filled the cabin nicely with bass
Glass cleaner may be OK, but a good short term "lube" for when you need help getting something on but don't want it moving around later, is hairspray.
That's interesting, may try it!
dude...got some serious DIY skills.
Thanks!
Car is getting to be pretty sick man - well done!
Thanks!
Matt it’s really coming together. Is there no cover for the fuel pump? Seems like something should go there. Great Job!
There is but for some reason it was off in the shots when it was done.
I have one, I just didn't put it back on yet.
@@matt13ross Question for you, I just started my channel. What editing software are you using and how fast is your computer. I need to buy a laptop. Any help would be appreciated.
Adobe Premiere Pro. I have a Lenovo laptop that's a few years old. Can't do 4K but is fine for what I need. A gaming computer is always a good option, very powerful.
@@matt13ross Thank you! I appreciate the help
Coming together great! A Porsche is on my dream car list for sure.
Was on my list too. Took me 19 years to make it happen. Well worth it. Just make sure to do your research on each specific model before deciding what to get and always get a PPI
Great video! Porsche audio systems are notoriously complicated.
Just like BMWs!
For the amount of times you record throwing garbage into the bin, you really need to pipe in a quirky sound bite.
Such a great job being done on this car, I look forward to the next video. 👍🇨🇦
Haha!
Fantastic job cleaning and modifying one of my FAV Porsche! I would absolutely LOVE a 996 Turbo Tip with a GT2 kit on it! I mean like perfect! Great job. A car worthy of being treated well and put right and driven regularly and like you stole it!
Thank you for the kind words!!
Looks great, cars coming along great, enjoying the truck updates as well.
One of few who like the truck lol.
looks great Matt
Keep up the great content Matt!
Green and red look the same?? you must have fun at traffic lights 😀
Haha, only sometimes!
Awesome video!
Seeing you fix up the 996 makes me want to tackle the same thing, Good shit bro
Do it!!
The hole in the cowl where you have the battery tender connector is typically occupied by a clear plastic cover you can read the VIN through. The more you know. That refreshed black plastic looks super clean and I should probably do mine now.
The vin is in there? I didn’t even notice lol
@@matt13ross yeah that is like standard place for every car, but I don't own a car what would I know..... :(
The fact you washed the girl's car means you really want to get as much done today without any interruption, I use the same technique.
😂
Love how everything is turning out..
Car was in bad shape try the comfort convience module to see if the car recognize the key . Then try and readapt it before shelling out for a new key that might work . Try and get a VAG specific scan tool = save money on Porsche parts and problems 😅
I should have clarified, the light on the key fob doesn't light up, so I'm guessing it's getting no power.
OEM+ nicely done.
this car is looking so tidy now :D
You’re right Matt it is the little things that count 😂 as we used to say when project managing it is the last 5% that takes 95% of the effort. Keep it coming 😊
Absolutely!
i've always appreciated your workmanship Matt, nice job on the car
Thanks 👍
Well done young man great work👍🏼
if you want the engine bay to look really clean. there is a boat wash soap that you spray it and let soak for a while then pressure wash it and it will look like new. I cant think of the name right now and since I am watching this video right now I am not going down to the boat dock to get the name .
I’m a fan of black wheels but these don’t pop in video. Have you considered going to silver wheels? I think it would look even better especially since you removed all of the black paint. Either way it looks great!
I may coat these lighter.
Nice! I reckon a little cover for the fuel pump would look tidy too.
I’ve got it lying around.
Love this build
With all the watts the amp provides, I’d imagine putting super high quality speakers in the factory locations would provide a serious amount of sound. EQ is your friend! Even a single 8” sub does wonders in a little car, but might not be necessary.
I’m going to replace the speakers just need to do some research first.
@@matt13ross finding good speakers is a daunting task. Spend money on really good speakers and you won’t have a regret! One thing to think about when choosing speakers is that 3 way tend to have a stupid amount of treble. Find something that sounds good to you and visit a car audio store. Cheers!
Love the build
Nice job Matt. Well done with coping with the colour blindness. Boy done good!!😎👍
It's a hassle! lol
Great video as always matt! I actually would have liked to see a lot more detail, maybe split the video into two? Anyway great result.
You should definitely add an under sear sub. The difference is hight and day with and without a sub. Kicker HS10 or similar will make it sound waaayyyy better.
The problem with a more detailed video is, most get bored, click off the video or skip ahead. That's bad for analytics and youtube doesn't promote the video.
@@matt13ross Ahhh I get you, can't please everyone in fairness! Anyway job, car is really coming along. What happens when you finish? Please another Porsche! Maybe a classic :)
I'd love to get a 997 GT3 or Turbo. Perhaps an F80 M3. Who knows?!
@@matt13ross Oh man the M3 is amazing. But 100% go for the GT3 or turbo
@Matt Ross maybe at that time I'd be willing to sell my 997 turbo that's speed yellow as well
Well done my son. That was a particularly satisfying episode. The car is looking so much better! Are you able to send merch to New Zealand?
If you check the website it should show you. I'm pretty sure I've sold stuff there already!
Best 911 build on the internet rn 🔥🔥
Wow, thank you!
FROM BLAN TO COLLECTABLE. LOVE D PROGRESS
I considered LED lights for things like my license plate but I don't want to make it easier for the police to read my plate lol
😂
Looking nice neat and tidy…👍👍
I picked up a Bose sub from a salvage yard and wired it to the amp and it sounds divine!
I have the factory Bose system in my 997.1 turbo and I am far from impressed. I used to upgrade all my vehicles audio systems but I haven't done it for around a decade now but I dislike the factory Bose system so much that I have been thinking about upgrading the entire audio system for the car
@@sutherlacd27 just upgrade the head unit as I did in my 02 996.2. I used a pioneer head unit and you need the adapter to connect the factory amp. That system sounded awesome. Crutchfield is the best place to get car audio gear
@@mvanlinge I have an aftermarket pioneer head unit already
@@sutherlacd27 I’m thinking that you’re not using the OEM amp. It requires a special harness. It’s sounds super lame with out the harness
I was able to refresh my 2003 C4S cowl, it does get faded. I am surprised your battery tray was not rusted. Mine was pretty bad, but limited to the top of the tray. It is easy to remove and fix. Love your work and just bought merch! Look for my email.
Also restored and painted the red handle on the frunk release. Painted it, but wonder if plastidip would work?
And, there are rubber expansion nuts that receive M8 bolts to hold down the two side panels beside the battery.
Small steps turn into a big one, nice work 👍💪💥🇳🇿
Just a quick suggestion, you should have gotten a kit to build your own RCA cable to the exact length you needed to you wouldn’t have to wrap the rest up and hide it.
What speakers are currently in it?
Great to see it coming together so well though.
That would have been a good idea! Not sure on which speakers yet.
You are missing a small clear plastic cover that goes over the VIN .
Didn't realize that one.
@@matt13ross are you in Lanc Lanc area? It looks like it. I used to live there. I’m now in West Chester- about an hour. Are you going to the Porsche meet up in Hershey on 4/29?
I just happened to be there that day. Didn't hear of that meet, I'll have to check my schedule!
For the Key fob I have the same issue. From what i read there IS a counter in the processor of the Key fob. After a fixed amount of closing/opening it just stop working and only Porsche Can provide a New Key. Hope im wrong but Never find a way to make it working again. Hope you could find another way
Those cables in the amp are going to get loose just with the car vibration every 2-3 month . The foam instead of fixing it to the chasis it’s going to allow more movement. Add a big blob of tin( with flux ) to the end of the cables to help mitigate it
I'll wait a few months and see, hopefully it stays tight.
Just a heads up. I believe you are missing the oem foam flap over the cabin filter. You may want to replace it at some point.
Didn’t know there was one!
@@matt13ross I had a 997 that was missing one and assumed the 996 was the same design. I just did a search (should have done before posting), and it looks like it doesn’t have the flap. False alarm!
Try a JL Audio micro sub for back deck area... if you decide to add a sub
JL is the best sub choice there is.
Hey Matt, live the channel your are champ
were the lights glary
The negative end of the battery maintainer is not to be connected to the negative terminal of the battery! It needs to be connected to the ground bolt located close to the battery. This is the official way it should be done as instructed by Porsche.
Hrm, I wonder why they say that?
@@matt13ross Its do to with the fact that the car is grounded if Im not mistaken. If you simply connect to the negative terminal on the battery it will not charger properly for longer periods of time, in some cases it may even drain further the battery. Had this happen to me unfortunately. If you manage to get your hands on the owners manual for your model it tells you the proper way. Hope this helps.
To clarify my experience is on a 992 but I expect it to be the same for a 996.
You should get a c5 corvette next. You’d be shocked at how similar a lot of the build quality and issues seem to be to this era Porsche
C5 Z06 is on my radar for a possible drift car build.
Next up, change those taillights out for some factory ones.
Future video
im a mechanic... just came home to have lunch... and this is what i see!!! tks matt!
yea I am talking while watching the video.
Matt It would be ideal to install black finish hd headlights!👌💯
How about nooo scotty
Black where?
I just bought my first 997. Had to buy the “POORSCHE” shirt 😂 Will you make a 997 outline?
Yes when I own a 997! Lol
👍all day job Mr Matt but you made an excellent video
What about that small circle hole in the front bumper?? Any plans to plug it up?
Not sure yet
Do love these M… but maybe as older person wondering why you’re not fixing the check engine light and performance instead of the stereo. When you road test it looks slow for a P turbo.
I’ve been fixing that stuff at the same time.
Remote may need programming?
It's not getting power, key fob light doesn't turn on.
The Key probably needs to re connect to the car after changing the battery...... put the key in the ignition, fire up, shut it down , remove key from ignition then try to lock/unlock with the remote.
The light on the key never turns on, so I think it's an internal issue.
@@matt13ross worth a try, the light is just an led and they can fail. I got my Audi reconnected like this
Matt can we get a tool box tour? :D
Perhaps in a future video!
That amp may get kind of hot mounted like that just an fyi
That crossed my mind. Not much load on it with my current setup.
You love bringing up that she will be mad abut u not cleaning her car lol
How much longer is he going to take to change the tails 😢
At this rate, NEVER!!!
Matt, for quite a few episodes I've been screaming in my mind for you to chase wires to solve the door issues and the sound problems, and finally, I understand now why you've been so tentative. being colorblind really does mess with your ability to be a sparky. keep up the good work, and I know you have to put out content but please preplan your content so they align up with your builds in progress. yhou shouldn't have have to rebuild your dash thrice in a row for the same issues. do what you can though!
I fixed the window motor, did you see that?
@@matt13ross I did!
Hi mate
Send your key fob to Northridge Fix he will fix it for you his in California, watch his videos
Thanks for sharing this with us. Really loving this build. Also why not upgrade the steering wheel with something else. This is arguably the ugliest Porsche steering wheel, and anything would be an upgrade from this? Although looks are subjective so you do you.
Funny you should ask, steering wheel upgrade coming VERY soon!
@@matt13ross Can't wait for the next video😊
I can't decide what is worse...the 996 steering wheel or the 997.1 multifunction steering wheel.
why didn't you use one of the wires you pulled out to pull the new wires into it
They weren't the right kind of wires.
The keys go dead after the battery is disconnected for a while, there is a sequence ro re activate them, did it on my 997 can't remember what it is bit should be easy to find it online
The light on the fob doesn't light up, even with a new battery.
did you ever have any zr2 tea shirts
Yes a few are on the website.
What is wrong with driver side mirror???
Plastic piece is loose, need to wedge it back in there.
Y'know, don't crap on the previous owner too much; if it wasn't for his or her neglect, this car wouldn't have been cheap to buy. Also, you ever try those EnChroma glasses for your red/green problem?
True story! And I’ve never heard of those glasses!
