One more tipoff was the line "there was a wreath on his door." Foreigners and city people won't know this, but it was traditional in the south and rural areas for people who had a death in the family to put a wreath on their door so their neighbors passing by would know there was a death, and rural people being rural people,go home, cook up a bunch of food, and take it back to the greiving family so they didn't have to worry about feeding themselves and well-wishers who stopped by to offer condolences.

@@henryq9390 This song in fact was written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman, two longtime and seasoned writers of country songs in Nashville. George Jones didn't want to sing this song; it took over a year to get him to even start on it and that long to get it finished. It has come down to us since then as one of the saddest - and often called the best - country song ever written. So it was written and sold as just a country song, but it connected with the public segment that loved country music and made an alltime star and iconic figure of George Jones.

I give a like to anyone who listens to this song. All of you young people may not immediately understand country music, but every one that has listened to this song has started swaying to the beat and probably never realized it. That is the effect of true country music on people that don't normally listen to it. True country music has died because all the true country artists have died.

The reason he stopped loving her is because he died. She came to see him one last time - at his funeral. With these old school country songs, there is almost always a twist in the lyrics. It did not help that they scrolled another story on the screen while the song was playing.

"HE SAID I'LL LOVE YOU TIL I DIE" - the chorus is "HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY" -- Sooooooooo. ???? - so many reactors have no clue that this is a story about a guy that spent his entire life loving a women that didn't love him back but he loved her til he died - I often wonder what the reactors think the meaning of the lines "all dressed up to go away" (where is he going) - "soon they will carry him away" (who is carrying him and to where?) - why would she come to see him one last time after all these years on the same day he stopped loving here (guess just great timing) .......

No need to chastise someone for not catching it. Especially when the video is a documentary and pictures of the artist.
