Vekoma clearly solved the problem of how to load and unload a flying coaster--having the track rotate sideways while turning the seats in and out of a sitting position. It's the kind of brilliant invention that only seems obvious in hindsight.

It's also easier with checking the restraints. Just walk past the train, whilst in other flyers, staff needs to walk in and out of the gaps between the cars to check.

      @flying_marvin 2 года назад +9

@@NiekNooijens In my opinion, that makes checking the restraints even better than on traditional coasters since you don't even have to walk trough the lines (when there is only a single operator).

@@animeleek But that would also be the case with a B&M flyer right?

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 2 года назад +4

The only major issue I can see might be capacity. This probably limits how wide you can make the cars. Four abreast, like a Flying Dutchman or a B&M flyer, could be impractical because you'd need to space the rows out even further to manage the rotation. And the trains get really long. But F.L.Y. seems to manage decent capacity by running a lot of trains.

An interesting fact almost no one knows about F.L.Y.:
In Bar 1919, there is a billard table with a glass roof above.
Turns out that the maintenance hall of F.L.Y. is just beneath the billard table and they are able to put the table away and open the glass roof so they can deliver spare parts for the coaster through the bar with the help of a crane.
If you look for the switch track into the maintenance building shortly after dispatch you can figure out that the location of the maintenance hall matches pretty well with the bar.
I've first heard about this in a RUclips video and since I couldn't stop thinking about it, I had to ask the barkeeper when we stayed at the hotel and apparently, it's actually true. Still mind boggling how they managed to cramp all of this into such a tiny area in multiple layers.

    • @flying_marvin
      @flying_marvin 2 года назад +13

      @@Spiderific Unreal.
It very easily exceeded our already incredibly high expectations. Every single corner is incredibly themed and detailed. The restaurant was great, we've had an awesome meal and breakfast, the bar was awesome as well and I could've stayed much longer in our room.
It was great to be able to walk through Rookburgh in the evening hours, you were actually able to take pictures with no one else on your photos. Especially the view from the top of the hotel was wonderful.
Most importantly, the staff is just awesome and probably the most happiest staff I've ever met.
Everyone was smiling, they were joking with themselves and with the guests, they were perfectly dressed (in terms of theming) and it was always great to be able to talk to them.
Since we visited weekdays and after the holidays, the park was not full at all (probably thanks to a very bad weather forecast which didn't came true at all).
Therefore, we were able to achieve a total of 64 coaster rides on these two days, including 25 rides on F.L.Y. and 18 rides on Taron, often without exiting our seats at all.
So at the end, we couldn't be happier with our stay at Phantasialand.

I went to Phantasialand to experience F.L.Y. in April, with a stay in the Charles Lindberg hotel. It boggles my mind how Vekoma and Phantasialand pulled off this ride. Absolute best moment for me on F.L.Y. is the starting dark ride section, with the visuals combined with the epic music and upward curving motion. It's so difficult to put into words what FLY is. It just is an experience, an adventure, and very immersive even without a story being told. The steampunk theme works so well with it, often parks try to hide as much of the coaster as possible, but in this case, the roller coaster itself is part of the theming. It's just so natural and fits so well.

How on earth did Vekoma build this with this crazy layout, in such a tiny space, but still feels so separate from all the other themed coasters, and has universal level theming, and has one of the most efficient loading methods, and has one of the most complex and advanced coaster systems, and is one of the most fun roller coasters to ever exist? This is just WILD.

    • @AceAviations2

Rides like this are why I currently consider Vekoma to be a superior company to Intamin these days, this ride is on-par with Intamin innovation without the same reliability issues that typically plague Intamins.
Also when looking at both Vekoma and Intamin's recent coasters Vekoma does better in variety.
Most of Intamin's have been just some variant on a sit-down launch coaster for the major ones with a handful of exceptions (some of which like Flamingo Land's new coaster aren't truly new given that was supposed to be built in 2013 for a park in Brazil), making them mostly a one-trick-pony at this point. The most 'unique' of the launch coasters is Big Dipper at Luna Park, which is a knockoff RMC Raptor with a launch.
Vekoma's on the other hand is FAR more diverse with this, the STC, Lech, Fonix, Guardian's, the Hyper Space Warp, Invincible Warriors (Vekoma Renegade), their own launch coasters (Shockwave, Top Gun, Firestorm and Space Warp) and the continuation of their other models on top of the revival of the Tilt Coaster model.
Intamin has gone pretty stagnant if we're being honest here while Vekoma is now the innovator.

Yep, I have been patiently waiting for a couple of years to visit Phantasialand again for FLY. It happened this summer, just shy of a few weeks before your trip. And man was I hyped for it. I am not a fan of B&M flyers, but this thing is nothing short of bonkers. The entire area, including the ride itself, feels like one big cohesive masterpiece in design and engineering. It should have definitely raised the bar for all those parks that are trying to deliver unique themed experiences.
The hurdles that Phantasialand had to and have to overcome still mesmerize me. Ever since I was a kid I saw great potentiallity in this park and I am delighted to see I was right. I can not wait to see what's next in store for this park.
In case you aren't familiar with some of the hurdles they have; it's mainly the neighboring town that complains about the noise coming from the park. They worked their way around this by making Black Mamba dip in and out of the ground practically eliminating the typical B&M rumble. Taron has this massive walls around it that are fully themed. Rookburgh is just one big closed off area. Wuze Town is indoor. Everything looks tactful and and no point do you feel like the themed areas are clashing with one another.

Vekoma and Phantasialand did an absolute stellar job with F.L.Y and Rookburgh. The amount of detail that Phantasialand put into this area is absolutely amazing, and you can't deny that this is Disney level theming right here, and it's not even a Disney park. The whole steampunk concept here is pulled off extremely well. Phantasialand even went out of their way to make sure that the roller coaster is blending well with the rest of this area, and you can see that. And F.L.Y is no joke of a roller coaster. Vekoma's concept on a flying coaster in this era is absolutely insane. Very intense (even though the trains don't seem like they're going too fast), great launches, and also the way the trains operate and tilt. And from an operations standpoint, Vekoma really did implement everything. It definitely seems that they studied their old Flying Dutchman coasters and studied B&M's flying coasters, and solved the issue of loading and unloading the trains quickly to the point where there are no delays that the Flying Dutchmans or B&M flying coasters usually have. So kudos to Vekoma and Phantasialad for this amazing area and coaster. Absolutely 10/10.

Great video and comments. I was surprised that I liked this more than Taron when there in July and rode each 6 times. F.L.Y is so unique and fun--that floating time after the 2nd launch hill is amazing and the closest one might come on a coaster to the sensation of gliding. There is nothing like it here in US. Disney would be wise to expand more into the coaster world more.

Phantasialand rollercoasters, for some baffling unexplainable reason, always underwhelm me the first time I ride them. It happened to Black Mamba, to Taron, and to F.L.Y.
It's always on my second visit that everything just clicks and I'm crazy impressed with the stellar work they always put out, so I can't wait to ride F.L.Y. again in 2 months

I just did it for the first time last tuesday with my girlfriend. She's not a fan of launch coasters at all, Taron was way too much for her. But damn, this thing put a smile on her face. She got all emotional after the second run we had, both times in front.
I must say, I don't think I have done a better coaster/theme experience than this. This is a full package.

FLY and Rookburgh are one unit and wouldn't work without each other. If you slapped FLY on a lawnyard, it would be mediocre at best.

    • @AceAviations2

No, this would likely be a custom design style based on what the park wants, which is what this model is perfect for. I'm sure that they'd introduce some smaller cloneable models (like the original Flying Dutchman model), but the main selling point would likely be the big ones like this.

I experienced this ride on the 30th of August this year - it was a pretty fun experience! I was on row 3, if I'm remembering right. I rode it once on my second day in the park, and did not re-ride.
    Pros:
    - truly unique seating and ride experience
    - the ride is LONG! Phantasia is king for me when it comes to wait-worthy experiences
    - very good track elements
    - the track is also exquisitely assembled, there is not the slightest bit of chop at any point
    - the theming is truly unrivaled!
    Cons:
    - the line to the station is very long, so you have to do a LOT of walking even if crowds are thin! This might become annoying if you want to do a lot of re-rides. It's also a hurdle for folks who have to be wary of leg pain relating to hip, ankle or knee issues. Like many of the big queuelines in this park, there are a LOT of little stairs, and I don't think F.L.Y's line can be shortened for a more expedient route.
    - my mother and younger brother both complained that the leg guards were very unpleasant for their shins the whole ride, but this was not a problem I personally experienced.
    - However; I personally found the breastguard to be highly uncomfortable immediately after the cars rotated to their 'flying' position, as the harness compressed my torso quite a bit in all the most unpleasant places. Male riders probably don't notice this quite as much.
    - this is a *highly* subjective point, but for me at least, F.L.Y did not quite hit the high points that I was hoping it would, so on the whole I still prefer Taron, *especially* when it comes to seat design.

If you would have put "favorite coaster is a Vekoma" on my bingo card 25 years ago - or even five - I would have laughed. Hell, the day I was at Phantasialand I avoided it until nearly the end because I generally hate how flying coasters hang you, and... Vekoma.
It's an absolute masterpiece and perhaps the best ride ever as a total package. I'm hoping some park in the US gets one so I can experience it more!

Absolutely agree. Riding this was like exeriencing my first roller coaster again because the experience is just so different to any other ride. Wasn´t a fan of the theming at first and I still thing Afrca and Klugheim look better, but entering Rookburg for the first time and seeing all that track around you is really something else.
Also 100% agree on the airtime being the best thing about this ride. Flying airtime is crazy fun and I hope more flyers will have it in the future.

I was there with my two nephews lately. The older one is 13, the younger 10 years. The older one was brave, until he rode his first rollercoaster. After that it was impossible to convince him to go on another rollercoaster. And I couldn't let him run around on his own, because there were still substantial queues and I didn't want to lose him for hours. Also, their parents didn't let them take their mobile phones, because they were worried they'd loose them. Wonderful park, great rollercoasters. I managed to go on Taron with the younger nephew, shortly before the park closed and there was no line. A blast! At least that was wonderful - albeit short.
So, if you're planning to go with younger family members, make sure you have enough equipment and people with you to plan for alternative occupations. I payed over 50€x3 to ride 2 rollercoasters... but I might return with my younger nephew next year and ride them all!! FLY was the one we were most impressed by, too. Even though Mamba looks kinda cool too, hell they all do :p

The only thing I kind of think could have been done better, is the floorspace for the lockers. It would have been nice if it somehow would be larger, especially the return area get's crowded a bit too much with people going to the locker to retrieve their stuff and then turning back to the exit gate.
