  • It's only been 6 years since my last demo so I thought I'd do one for this Gretsch G9220 Resonator Guitar. I've had it since April of this year. For my original music head over to www.sincerelyiris.com This guitar will definitely be on my next album. I used two tunings on this video. Open D Major (DADF#AD) and D Minor (DADFAD). If you have any questions just let me know.

    Nah man if your res is set up right you can bang on it pretty good. They just don't always come in the best shape. Lot of travel time to get into our hands. I got a grestch boxcar about a month ago and it came with a little rattle. I was able to RUclips my way through it and now it plays great. Having a resonator, even a new one is kinda like having an old car. You either become a mechanic or you spend alot of time at the shop. Mine is the spider cone, and I believe yours is the gretsch' s biscuit. I almost bought that one. It's cool to hear it play but I am very happy with the choice I made. Now I'm saving up for a mule!

    Looks like I'm viewer 5,000. A bonus in this vid is the use of the internal pick-up vs acoustic recording. I prefer the acoustic...I expected to with a resonator. You saved me $150. The issue with the surface being marred by sweat, etc., can probably be solved with shellac; maybe other varnishes too, but shellac is what is on the best violins etc, because it can go on very thin and stay very flexible. It does not dampen the vibrations that way. It's a great sealant. (Clean the surface and test it first on any surface to make sure it doesn't react with other coatings possibly present.) Thanks for the vid; very nice playing. I'm about 99% sure I'll be getting one of these sans 'lectronics.

    After playing always wipe your cone cover down with a silicone cloth. Keep it clean. Acid and oil from your fingers and arm will cause the cover to corrode. No it’s not just something these guitars do.

    Do you think that this cover plate is more likely to get spots and corrosion (from sweat and such) than other brands? I am about to buy my first resonator and looking for this Bobtail Gretsch (but square neck). I read it is nickel plated, and stuff I have that are nickel plated, does not get more spots than chrome details on an old car. One can polish it. But the thickness and quality of the plating may differ, making it harder to polish.

      Man, I'm really not sure honestly. I've heard conflicting answers haha. My one guitar techs said that you can't polish them out, and to just leave it for "character." But some people in the comments below have had some good suggestions, but I haven't tried them out yet. I wish I knew the answer, but I don't want to lie to you or anything. Best of luck!

    Which would be best for fingerstyle blues played without a slide: biscuit or spider? I like playing R.L. Burnside and John Lee Hooker songs, often in open G tuning. And would you suggest a wooden or metal body? Some resonators I've tried sound too much like banjos. You're a great musician, so I'd really value your opinion and appreciate a response! Stay healthy and keep playing!

    • @Sincerelyiris
      @Sincerelyiris  4 года назад

      Hey Roy thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it man. That's a tough question! I'm not sure if I have the best answer. There are some videos out there comparing the difference between spiders and biscuits. I think that spiders just sounded a little less bluegrass-y to me. But that's just me. I'm not sure that you necessarily need a resonator for that kind of music, but if you get one and you're not playing slide, make sure your action is lower that needed for slide. One other option, if you don't go with a metal body, is maybe looking into those old vintage DeArmond soundhole pickups. I've seen a lot of people playing through those (including Warren Haynes) and they just automatically sound vintage. Not sure that they're THE MOST versatile things if you're not playing blues, but they definitely have a VIBE. Hope this helps a bit!

    • @royevans6116
      @royevans6116 4 года назад

      @@Sincerelyiris I agree with what you wrote about spiders sounding less bluegrassy. Most online articles about resonators say biscuits are for blues, spiders are for bluegrass and country. But my personal experience has been the opposite. I already own three acoustic guitars, but I need the eerie, cosmic tones of a resonator in my life! Royall makes inexpensive tricones, but I can't find much about that company's reputation. I might very well get a Gretsch G9220 Bobtail because of your video and informative response, so thank you!

    I wonder if it needs (well not even a cutaway more like) a chip away just to get lower with the slide.
    But if all those guys from the 20's etc could do it on the beasts they had to use I'm sure we can learn to live with it. 😂

    • @Sincerelyiris
      @Sincerelyiris  4 года назад

      Yea that's a solid point haha. I do think that when you play it with a strap it improves the angle a little bit and makes that 12th fret easier to access. Maybe that's why Kelly Joe Phelps wears a strap with certain guitars, even sitting down. Of course, the other option is for me to just suck it up and start playing with the slide on my pinky. Thanks for watching man!
