    Hello everyone! I have been replying to comments individually but I want to make this public and known to all the viewers of this video 1. I have done my research on Betta fish and have done more since posting this video. I would like to add that I DID return to the original store with the very informative employee and I did follow her recommendations 2. I bought a 5 gallon tank which is absolutely sufficient for a Betta fish. 3. The tank has a light, a filter and I bought a heater! 4. I have purchased many plants for my betta to hide and explore. 5. I take pride in giving my pets the best life I can give them. 6. I thank everyone who has given me advise and let’s remember that we all make mistakes even as parents to children. I want to thank you all for your concerns. To UPDATE YOU my fish is very much alive and seems to be very happy and lively (his colour is vibrant and he is very active)

    Before you get any pet, even fish, you need to do the research. Fish are not decorations. They’re living things. Just because they can survive in a bowl doesn’t mean that they’re gonna thrive. Betta fish can grow up to three inches. They’re small but they need big tanks. 5 gallons is the minimum. 10 gallons is good if you want to add some tank mate but do your research before adding tank mates. Also, the bigger the tank the better because you don’t need to clean it as much, but do water changes at least once a week. If you keep it in a small bowl, you’d need to clean it like almost everyday. You should search up cycling a tank to have a better understanding of things. When you do, you’ll understand why you can’t but a fish in a tank you set up the same day. I also bought a 10 gallon tank for 10 dollars from petco. It was a dollar per gallon :)

    • @dotdot550
      @dotdot550 4 года назад +8

      And another thing, does your tank have a heater and a filter? Betta fish need low flow filters, if it’s high, it can ruin their fins. They’re also tropical fish so their water needs to be about 78 degrees. And before putting the fish in the tank, let the cup it’s in, rinsing it first of course, float in the water for like 10 minutes so the water temp can be the same so the betta is less stressed

    • @hayleyouellette5704
      @hayleyouellette5704  4 года назад +13

      Hey! Please read the description! I did buy a heater for tropical fish as well as I do have a low suction filtration system ( the one that came with the tank I purchased) I also made sure the temperatures were close to exact before placing the fish into the new tank insuring a reduced stress level when placing him into the new environment. I appreciate your concern and I agree all living things deserve to be treated with nothing but love.

    For once a pet store employee knew what they were doing, and was actually knowledgeable about fish, yet she was ignored by someone who doesn't have any interest in the fish's well being. Just because you've never cycled a tank before, or you've had bettas that *survived* in a bowl before, doesn't mean that it is appropriate husbandry. Keyword *survived* because that betta definitely did not thrive in a bowl OR tank that hasn't been cycled.

    Good on the employee for advising you and I do hope you continue to do proper research research on how to care for bettas. There should be more employees who are open to want to properly educate customers and the customer should be open to wanting to follow their advice. Because at the end of the day you’ll be definitely be spending more that 10.00 on a fish and it’s better to be prepared because if there’s casualties, you’re essentially throwing money down the toilet along with your dead fish. Bettas are amazing fish, but just as any pet they require time, money, and a base knowledge of care. Also not sure if you did improve on your fish’s set up but I’d strongly encourage you to get a heater. Bettas are tropical fish and they’re happy in water 75-80 F. If not, it hinders proper digestion and diseases such as dropsy can occur. Also plants. I can’t stress this enough. An easy plant are ones like java ferns than can rest on rocks and not be put into substrate. Bettas, especially with those with large fins tire out easily swimming in open water and need plants, rocks, or wood to rest on. Mopani wood is a great option and my bettas love it.
    Welcome to the betta world! These are unfortunately extremely misunderstood fish which is why you’re getting a lot of backlash for your video as they are finally getting the respect that these fish deserve. Over the years, bettas have been treated more and ornamental rather than a living being who deserves proper love and care. There’s plenty of resources you can use and I’d highly encourage you to join sites like Reddit and join the betta group on there. I’ve been keeping bettas for over ten years and out of all the internet communities they are the most helpful.

    You have to make sure that the temperature between the water in the bowl and the aquarium match exactly. The temperature should be between 78 and 82°. You also need to have a test kit to make sure there are zero ammonia, 0 nitrites and less than 40 nitrates. When those numbers match, your aquarium is cycled. Until then, you should do weekly water changes of 25% and add Fritzzyme 7 which is beneficial bacteria which will take care of the ammonia and nitrites It will help to cycle your tank.

    It seems the first person at Petco knew what they were talking about but was pretty condescending about it, which is an awful way to teach people about minimum tank requirements and the nitrogen cycle and no wonder it made you dig your heels in and try to find someone to sell you a fish immediately. I'm glad you still put in the effort of learning without her help and got your fish a proper set up. From what I've seen though, through this video you seem to be acting impulsively with the idea that it's just a fish so its not a big commitment (which I'm hoping was just the excitement and impulsiveness and its changed since this was posted) which means a lot of information was probably missed, so please mind me asking the following questions. It's not to judge you, just to make sure you can enjoy the time with your new finned friend to the fullest.
    How often do you test your water parameters? Do you test them yourself or bring them to the store?
    Did you do a fish-in tank cycle or did you just put him in and let him be?
    How often do you do your water changes? How much water do you change?
    Betta fish like to have multiple places to hide and explore, and they can see as many colors (or more) as a human can, so your buddy might like at least one new hidey hole. But be careful it doesn't have any rough spots that can rip his fins or small holes he can get stuck in.

    I own 2 betta’s male and female and my friend has around 17 male and females she has a female sorority, and the males are all in separate tanks 3.5 gallons is her smallest tank, fish do need certain things no sharp plants not bowls nothing under 2 gallons and filters are best, also do research before u get any pet from trustable source, also those were horn worms, don’t just impulse buy any animal cause they are still living creatures

    I don’t want to be rude but you do need at least a 5 gallon tank for one beta fish, also I would not recommend putting more than one in a tank. You do need to leave the tank running for at LEAST 3 weeks before you out the fish in it, otherwise the ammonia will kill it. Please if you ever plan on getting another animal, do your research before you get it!

    There’s a reason why you have to cycle a tank. The ammonia that builds up (the fish pees and poos in the water) builds up. Because of this, the ammonia is so toxic it burns the fish alive. Ultimately killing it in the end. Which is unfair, because you’re putting the thing in pain, and burning it alive, basically.
    It’s not even that hard to cycle, and 2-3 weeks fly quickly, you’ll forget it. You drop fish food in there, revisit and test the water in 3 weeks.
    Betta fish are very active fish - that’s why they’re not meant to be in anything under 5 Gallons. They are constantly swimming around, only a unhealthy Betta (bad quality water) makes them not active, and lethargic.
    I’m not sure why you acted on an impulse buy. Would you do the same with a dog? - I don’t think you would.
    Research would’ve taken you 15 minutes tops. Also these fish despite being fish have a lot of personality and you will see yourself.
    You were being ignorant, and acting on impulse. Also, probably not a good idea to buy a pet if you are unhappy about the expenses. The startup is always expensive while done right.
    Also, you laughed about the heater, but these are tropical fish, as to why they need one.
    Lastly, sure they may survive in small bits of water, and last a decent amount of time, but in the end they’re not thriving and you’re just damaging the poor thing if it survives instead of dies.

    Has this girl never acclimated a fish before. all you have to do is hold the cup of water for about 20 minutes then you slowly add a little bit of water into it and wait another 20 minutes and then you do that a couple more times and then you can actually dump the fish in

      Just because he's alive doesn't mean he's doing great. Bettas are hardy fish, but they still suffer. they're good beginner ones if you raise them properly. Even though bettas are small, they need room to swim. In the wild, they live in marshes that are easily over 1 million gallons. But, the lady saying 10 gallons is a good tank size, but you really just need maybe 5 gallons.

    Bruh y’all r being so harsh like we all had to start somewhere with fish keeping yes she didn’t really know what she was doing but we all make mistakes. I mean, she should’ve read more about them, but it was her first fish and we all had our first fish and we made our mistakes just learn from it in the future. Don’t spread hate though.

    These pet stores give me problems about getting goldfish because of a 20 gallon mimum for one and i have had two in a 20 then one in a 10 gallon so when i get a fish i tell them i have a 55 or if i buy a new tank i tell them the fish i am buying is for another tank but little do they know the “new” tank is for the fish i purchase

    Yeah, you are supposed to cyclone tank for two weeks or if you get the right kind of conditioner colour Quickstart can be ready in 48 to 72 hours. They’re just trying to help you see your fish don’t die not trying to be rude, but you’re not a very good fish keeper if you were denying help on the best ways to take care of fish, I would not sell you any of my fish in my store if I had owned the store, but there still time for you to learn always look up how to take care of maintain stuff before you get them

    At least at the pet store the cups get water changes. She let her tank "CyCLe" for two days and didn't do anything with that cup water. Ammonia probably sky high in there. And her attitude and impatience is infuriating. I have had my betta tank for three weeks now with no betta at all because it's cycling and the plants are still coming in the mail. Do you know how many times I want to buy a betta from the breeders I am following online. But that's the thing, the fish keeping hobby is all about patience. Which she obviously had none of. The way she brushed aside that petsmart employee like she was just being annoying for not selling her that fish too 🤦‍♀️
    Some people are just ignorant.

    Good to see you did your research. But your attitude about the employee trying to help, was infuriating. You acted like a 10 years old brat and your mother completely supported you in that. Maybe be nicer to someone who's trying to help and do your research before you mock someone trying to help, especially when you have no idea about the whole thing. The employee was very nice to even help you test the water. And you're hoping she's not there. Laughable. Be glad she's there to help such terrible customers, trying to let you know about things you don't. Appreciate it.
