    Do you have any thoughts of quality of the stream via USB-C vs Ethernet? BMD’s support is very vague and doesn’t provide a clear answer. Thoughts? Thank you for your time and your great videos!

    • @StephLeeTech
      @StephLeeTech  3 года назад

      Thank you for the support and watching my videos! In my experience the quality of the stream isn't so much affected by the choice of USB-C vs Ethernet, more like the platform you use and the streaming quality set on the Atem. Those 2 are the biggest factors in getting a good quality stream.

    For music video production this feature is interesting! Musicians movie fast on stage and difficult to guess where they will be. With a small low budget production having the chance to fix some takes here and there.

      Hi Roger! Thanks for watching our videos! Yes I agree the feature is really good, but again for the price of $300 (Pro to ISO version), I could probably buy a couple of 256GB memory cards for less than $100 which could do the same function for that. Again, it's just my personal opinion :)

    I have a question Steph: if you are recoding the audio of a live singing performance through microphones into a audio mixer and want to incorporate that with the live video recording from camera; can the ATEM Mini Pro combine the audio output from the mixer to the video from the camera? Steph, TY for the excellent video on the mini pro iso. I'm a bit new and looking at the ATEMs and looking at them. I agree that your two points (extra USB-C and an audio monitor output) would be so useful. I have two questions . . .
    The audio output work around seems to be to feed HDMI output through a small monitor and grab the audio from the monitor and feed the HDMI through the monitor and send it on its way. Or I guess split the HDMI before the monitor if the monitor has not feed through. What are your thoughts on this?
    And the second question:
    Would this be a work around for the Iso Pro lack of USB-C output as a webcam? : Use an HDMI to USB-C web converter such as Elgato (expensive at $200) or others as cheap as $35 to create an HDMI to webcam feed to the Zoom-streaming computer. Thus freeing up the USB-C port on the ATEM for recording? I realize these converters introduce zoom latency as they eat up resources on the "Zooming" computer but at least the audio and video should be sync'd.

    • @StephLeeTech
      @StephLeeTech  3 года назад

      Hi David thanks for watching !
      1. Recommended to hdmi to monitor and extract audio directly. I talked about this in one of my latest videos under 3 amazing hacks for the Atem mini so u might wanna check that option out
      2. If u use the elgato to connect your camera directly to your zooming computer, it would mean u are missing out on using the Atem mini as a switcher if I understood ur qn correctly. A more stable workout would be to use OBS to record the output while still using the USB-C cable connection .
      Hope this helps!

    • @davidjackson552
      @davidjackson552 3 года назад +1

      Steph. TY for your reply! Re Elgato, no I was not referring to a direct connection to the camera but rather a connection to an HDMI out from the ATEM. Would this work in a similar fashion to using the USB-C as webcam output from ATEM? . . . presuming the ATEM provides the option to view the final output via the HDMI (what would be streaming on the ethernet).

  • @nyambe
    @nyambe 3 года назад +1

    I think ISO is valuable for content live creation which might o might not be streamed at that moment. Examples, education, presentations, ceremonies, concerts!, gammers! Wow. I don’t have the GH5 but many of the inputs are often presentations, screens from iPads or other computers which can’t be recorded.

    • @StephLeeTech
      @StephLeeTech  3 года назад +1

      Hi Samiebuka! Again, my point is not to diss the AMP, but just not impressed with the so-called upgrade from Pro to ISO version. All these so called "content" will be in your 1. recorded memory cards 2. PPT slides in your computer 3. mp3 audio files 4. mp4 videos and IF the client requires a high res version of the whole presentation, you can piece them all up in a separate Post production quotation and that is a project price itself which is chargeable. This has only happened twice in my livestream experience and in both cases I charged them separately for creating that higher quality video. I'm just saying $300 extra for that ISO function is not worth it because 90% of the time you hardly use the extra recorded material other than the one from the PGM output. Anyway, bottom line is, get whichever model that suits your budget and needs and you won't be disappointed! BMD has really great products!

  • @dra11y
    @dra11y 3 года назад

    Man I agree with you! I just got the ATEM Mini (NOT Pro) and love it. Even with the Pro, the only really good feature seems to be the hardware live-streaming (oh, and no WiFi, really??? $50 Raspberry Pi has WiFi!). Recording is a gimmick... you can only record at the same bitrate/quality as the livestream. Well, plus you get Multi View ... however, I'm visually impaired, and so Multi-View wouldn't really be that useful to me anyway (Preview feed from HDMI into USB capture card works great!). For roughly $350 total brand new, the ATEM Mini with a Raspberry Pi to playback upstream/downstream key motion graphics is the way for me!

  • @siskoDE
    @siskoDE 3 года назад +1

    Short question. I own a Macbook Pro from 2018. I last connected my DSLR via USB and integrated it into OBS using a software solution. A USB mic is also connected to the Macbook Pro. When streaming, the Macbook Pro box has already reached its limits and the CPU load ensures that you can actually no longer use the computer to work in a program and stream a video tutorial, for example.
    The ATEM Mini Pro with built-in encoder could solve this problem for me. In any case, I understand it that way, when I connect all the hardware mentioned to the ATEM Mini Pro and also connect my Macbook Pro to the ATEM via HDMI, that I can stream directly from the ATEM Mini Pro and the entire CPU performance would no longer come to fruition yes the ATEM is working.
    How does it all work when I connect all my hardware to the ATEM Mini Pro and connect it to my Macbook Pro via USB-C and then stream from my Macbook Pro via OBS (source is then ATEM video and audio). Is the CPU utilization of my Macbook Pro even smaller than when I use the first scenario without ATEM? Have you been able to gain experience on this?

    • @StephLeeTech
      @StephLeeTech  3 года назад +1

      Hi David. The moment you connect the macbook to the ATEM via USB-C cable means you are using the ATEM as a webcam. You are not tapping on the built in streaming engine of the ATEM's capability. To do that, you have to stream directly using the ATEM (either FB, RUclips or other streaming platforms) and this takes stress away from your Laptop. Hope this helps!

    I am looking for a device that can record the isolated hdmi tracks to SSD, but I don’t need any livestream switching capability. From what I understand the ATEM mini pro iso would do it, but I would like something smaller more portable with fewer buttons. Really what I want is a video equivalent to a Zoom H4N, but for video instead of audio. Does anyone know if something like this exists?

  • @Paladinleeds
    @Paladinleeds 3 года назад +4

    So why do I see this being very useful to me?
    1) If I do streams, I'm going to be using the built in encoder (if needed, I'll use something like a remote RTMP server on the LAN, which XSplit hooks into then produces a virtual camera for Teams/Zoom) to livestream, via the Ethernet port
    2) I want to have each input separately recorded, including the desktop PC output. This would do it without dropping or breaking any frames, which would mean highger reliability compared to my PC (and likely cost less than upgrading my PC)
    3) I use DaVinci Resolve (with all its quirks), so the automated timeline would work great for me. I'll need to figure out how to deal with the ultrawide monitor though.
    4) I'm no longer reliant on software for encoding, I can have a dedicated piece of hardware handle this for me, that is specifically designed with this in mind. Which feeds back into 2 really.
    So for me, this is something I'm going to look into. As you say, this video is based on your professional experience and opinions, but yeah, I can see this being EXTREMELY useful for me, moreso than the Pro (oh I'm so glad I hadn't bought one of those yet). Though that being said, a second USB-C port wouldn't go amiss! As well as a headphone out port (though this would largely be mitigated by using my GoXLR, and having all the audio pulled in that way, with only the mic sent via the Line Out port to the ATEM itself - that way every other track can be multitrack recorded properly for audio)

She was using a karaoke style app with the lyrics that get "blued" over when the lyrics are being sung (not too sure if u know what I mean!). I pinned her video and everyone was watching her screen and following the cue of the blued lyrics. Other than the occasional slight lag from 1 or 2 attendees I think it was alright, not all over the place imo . Maybe this might help!

      @@visioneer32 Hi Richard to put it simply, 1. Recording to the SSD, the USB-C is being utilised as an output source (from the switcher to the SSD) but
      2. Using it as a webcam, the USB-C is being utilised as an input source (from switcher to the computer).
      When you try to split the USB-C source it cannot function as an Output and Input at the same time.
      I have tested this before to confirm it and it doesn't work.

      @@StephLeeTech Thanks for that Steph, when you say that you have tested it, have you tested it with the ISO PRO model or Just the ISO model?, I wonder if the only way you can ISO record a live stream is if you use the ethernet port for the stream and then the USB-C port is free for the ISO recording??. Thanks again.

      @@visioneer32 Hi Richard its the PRO model, there's no PRO ISO model... You can only record via the USB-C port, so if you use that port as a webcam function you can't record. That's what I am saying in the video...

    Where i do see the iso being good is if you use mirror less cameras that have a record limit and you are shooting a wedding or similar where you may want to go back and recut something.

    • @moltenpros
      @moltenpros 3 года назад +1

      How many wedding videographers are you going to see this using ISO? none. are you going to run wires from your camera to the ISO, this is just a ridiculous statement. As a wedding videographer, you are mobile so how are you going to use the ISO when the ISO has to be plugged into an outlet. Just buy a camera with no recording limit like the Sony A7111 or Panasonic GH5

    • @StephLeeTech
      @StephLeeTech  3 года назад

      Hi Molten Pros thanks for helping me answer that. I think Mark probably meant livestreaming a wedding, and I have one wedding this coming Friday that requires livestreaming, hence the wires connected :) I have memory cards in each cam recording the event so I won't need the ISO function. And yes nowadays most cameras do not have this recording limit and if it does, it is better to get a new one that doesn't.

    • @moltenpros
      @moltenpros 3 года назад +1

      @@StephLeeTech If your cameras are going to be stationary close to the Atem then it can work. If you're moving around like a typical wedding videographer then you need a more mobile solution like Teradek vidiu go or LiveU Solo. You can also use Wireless video transmitters with the Atem but that will cost $300-$600 for each transmitter and it will also introduce more latency. In addition you will have to have another person control the Atem while you shoot.

      That is why I don't understand why some RUclipsrs are so excited about this ISO version, where it is in fact not so. BMD should not be making this version at all and we should be more informed with any of our purchases. I am a big fan of BMD products, just not so impressed with this move.

    I wonder who makes decisions in Blackmagic company. Nobody asked for this separate recording feature on each input, yet Blackmagic decided that we needed it. And the things we did ask for was not included. We asked for audio monitoring, a dedicated multi-view and a second usb c so that we could record and attach to a computer as a webcam at the same time. Blackmagic has really turn me off from their products. I am selling my Atem mini pro and going with another brand.

      Don't give up on them yet. I'm still a big fan of BMD products and will wait for a new model with the extra USB-C port. The workaround I have with audio monitoring is I got an external pc monitor that has an audio jack out which I connect to my headphones so I can monitor the audio. The single USB-C port has no easy workaround I can think of!
