Hawaii, we call'um "off da lip."🤙 Tip: one needs to drive your bottom turn and smash through the lip, with fins out of the water.😅 If you're going to just do a floater. You need to get practice overweight on the bottom turn and underweight "pop" with knees in a tucked position, to "float" off the top. Think of the maneuver like jumping & tucking your knees at the top of your jump, very similar to what you're trying to accomplish. Everything that I'm talking about can be accomplished on a 12 ft board... Good luck.
@@LongboardSessions I only mention 12 footers because it’s an extreme example. You can also do what I explain on a 5 ft board too, another extreme, on the opposite end of the spectrum.
@@LongboardSessionsAnd I love seeing two of my fave surf channels from around the world come together for this collab (though what y'all do is still lightyears beyond me!)
Dude I don’t often comment on RUclips Videos but I gotta say man great job. These videos are super fun and entertaining. I know it’s gonna be a good day when you post!
I admire your self-reflection and honest analysis of your surfing. Thinking about my surfing in this critical way doesn’t appeal to me but I see your progression. Cheers! BTW, I’ve heard this maneuver called “foam climb,” which seems weird now that I think about it.
Oh yea I totally get it. Iv'e had many people say they would never want to treat surfing like I do, and I get that. Some people just use it as a fun hobby and sorta escape. However, if you want to get better, this is the way to go IMO.
You’re videos make me wanna longboard. Been striving for short boarding but looking at things a little different. Just bought second hand 9ft softtop hopefully an get hard board for summer🤙
Been rewatching a lot of your videos since moving to a place with better waves. Riding a midlength right now but always learning something from your journey !
@@LongboardSessions Anytime Im on a longboard people tell me that I look like I want to be on a shortboard. And the opposite happens on a shortboard because I don't want to sacrifice that paddle power. Riding a 7'0 with a 8 inch single fin. Not much of a nose rider but I think you'd really dig it!
Who knows? I know them as off the tops. Although I learn a lot of my surfing language from Ben Considine who is from Australia... so this could be the problem haha
Thanks for a terrific video. In all honesty, I don't know if I will ever be able to cross step, although I've only tried it a few times. But off the top, that's something I'm pretty sure I could do, and it looks awesome!
Another great video Brian 🤙 can’t believe you of all people didn’t have a second fun 😂😂 off the tops… I think I would call them a floater…I think it’s one of the few manoeuvres I can do 😂😂 but I never wanna see what it looks like… I will happily die with just the feeling 😂
@@LongboardSessions lol imagine a gorilla shuffling around on aboard, knuckles dragging then a shit bottom turn followed by a very high board vertical floater... I imagine it's like that. but it feels like Machado style lol
I’d love to see this with the Chingona, perhaps with some discussion of tail rail design. i.e. I’m guessing that the Chingona has round rails right to the tail, but that the CI log has some edge. This manoeuvre seems like it’d be the one where that difference really shows up. Cheers 😉
You're 100% correct! That's why I wanted to try both which I will do in the future. We had such a flat spell and was running out of time before my surgery or I woulda taken this video to a third day.
Thanks!! Absolutely. I'm recovering from a hip replacement surgery as we speak, so im still 6 weeks away from being back in the water. I have a video or two already shot tho so that's good. I'd love to do a few more mic'd up!
Brian off the top so the only things I could flipping do😂 bro if it’s on your forehand put your weight on your back foot and aim to stick your board on the curl right on top of the lip bruv it’s about the only manoeuvre I can do. I’m so chuffed that you said you can’t manage it, you’re way better than I am.😂
As a former shortboarder, you should have mastered this long ago. Is it not? I surf both short and longboards. I think the off the top was the first maneuver I did on the longboard. :)
Honestly, don’t beat yourself up. Those waves are dumpy East Coast shore breaks, that really are not that Longboard friendly…… perhaps your Wife would prefer to live in California. Why New Jersey?
Ah yes! Well we have lived here most of our lives and have tons of family here, so we don't want to leave that. We do love to visit california, but wouldn't live there I dont think. We treat it as a vacation destination hehe

Thanks Michael!! I gotta get myself a mid length. I think it will help my longboarding haha

aren't they called floaters?
on the east coast, at least in the northeast... they would be called roller coasters.
Who knows? I know them as off the tops. Although I learn a lot of my surfing language from Ben Considine who is from Australia... so this could be the problem haha
YES they are called Floaters
IMO for a floater you have to travel across the white water, not just go up and down. Awesome progress whatever the manoeuvre is called! 🤙
Off da toppers!
Hey! Your ripping🤙When you go up for your floater just three things “lift, lean look” this helped me so much when I was learning
Oh i like that. Simple yet effective !
Great video! Thanks! I love doing off the tops, floaters, whatever the name is!
Thanks!!

Sometimes we get stuck in bad habits… like riding a longboard
A short boarder elitist no way !
lol!
These little videos are like surfing instructions for nerds
lol you just made my son laugh pretty hard
Is your CI an epoxy? Nice floater practice.
Thanks!! No, it's the classic fiberglass construction
When are you coming back to ca?
Let’s surf
At the moment I have no plans, but that should change soon! For sure we got to get a session in next time i'm out. Or if you're ever in jersey
Hey dude! Get a glider and start backdooring all the peaks there.
haha sounds like fun!

Not really, I didn't even do them back then. I wasn't necessarily a great short boarder tho haha
Yeah do better😂
In oz we call em chazwazzers
Where are all your other fins man? Thought you had 40
Who knows man... my friends keep stealing them
watch Ed Solt. Watch Levi Prarie. Wide stance. stay low.
Yes sir.. gotta keep them knees bent!
