Great tip I would argue painting on a thin layer of portland cement is superior to any liquid bonding agent out there.

You would be CORRECT. Think how strong the crystals are to interlock with the SMOOTH steel on this trowel. The same cement deposits are on my Marshalltown magnesium concrete float. The Portland cement crystals are more tenacious than Velcro.
