Glad to see a Harley video again.
Love to see the practical work arounds to bleeding ABS brakes. I avoided it for the longest time because I thought it was more complicated than it was and because I'd heard the scare stories about needing to take it to a dealer. Nice one as ever Del.

My technique is to close the bleed nipple before your brake lever stops sinking. That way certainly no air going back in as fluid still coming out... as a secondary I also use a vacuum pump (£20 eBay) as a guarantee. Brakes are rock solid at and takes 20 mins tops !

Great vid. Sealey Motorcycle brake bleeder with weighted, one way valve is a doddle to use.
You're right my friend, a great tool and I have one, but keep getting accused of being a Sealey shill, so just use a lump of hose and a spanner, works for me .. and this way, I can demonstrate to those who can't afford the tool, again just trying to dance around the critics who like to point out my every flaw !!!!!

What if I need to change the brake fluid hose? Need an extension to relocate to the rear on roadster. Does it mean I have to take it to a professional as while swapping the lines I’ll let air in?

What a twit indeed, I think they just saw an empty space and thought aha - or maybe, it's all a conspiracy to get the labour rates up for the dealers lol !
Have you ever consider making jumper wires to manually make the ABS motor run so that you could completely bleed the brakes??

Hi I prefer the look of the pipe you fitted to the one you changed it for in a previous vid its more fitting with the 50's retro look I think the bike is about. now all is required is spoke wheels.
In that vid I heard you mention Harley and tractor in the same sentence but as I tell many people tractors don't vibrate as much as Harleys, this usually stops the craic.
I have wondered many times why people cover their number plates in adverts and vids etc, I notice you do this, can you tell me why?
Looks like I'm gonna need a good sized box wrench for them screws.....not much area for any down force when trying to remove them screws.

Yes you can, as long as you don't feed any air down into the system, and it will work the same..
did you use the spanner (box end) with the phillips bit to undo the cap? The video didn't show how or which tool you used. thanks in advance del.
There isn't enough clearance above the cap for a screw driver / bit driver.. so i put a philips bit in a 1/4 drive socket and use a small ratchet.. goes in there nicely.

i tell e1 here in the states to look up your videos on changing fluids. will be doing all of mine this winter/spring. i just hit 1500 miles. so i don't ride alot mostly around town here and to the bigger hardware stores. hauled 4 stepping stones for the porch walk up yesterday and bag of mortor mix. heard people go look what hes doing. lighter than a passenger. just add a towel & straps. in fact i liked the added weight.......me and my little harley street.....lol
A bit off-topic, but I'm always interested in your shop techniques. And one topic I haven't seen (or missed...) is the proper use of a hydraulic work table (a tool I use all the time), I noticed on this particular video that you included two different bikes on your lift; one with a paddock stand (no center frame I suppose) and the other with a center support. On neither one did you use cam straps from the frame or handlebars to the platform - something I'd thought was a recommended safety procedure. If it's not necessary I don't want to "wear a belt and suspenders" as my grandfather used to say!
So, I was wondering if you might do a short video on how to use a hydraulic lift - I know it's basic, but sometimes you absolutely shine on the simple things too!

Hi Mike, you are quite right, it is generally recommended to use straps on any lift, but in my case, I have a high end lift, which has a fully supporting front brace, as you can see... and in both cases, with both bikes, the front brace will support the bike quite safely, unless you're pulling on it, and leaning on it, in relation to the work job you want to do, then you should certainly strap it down.... the paddock stand with the Kawasaki, and the under lift table under the Harley frame, are both there in order to steady the bike, so that all the flex doesn't go in to the front wheel, which is clamped at the front of the lift....... As you could see in both cases, I wasn't doing anything heavy, or intrusive, on the bikes, so the front lift clamp and the secondary lift/paddock stand, were safe enough in my view, but as you can see, if you look around the garage, I always have my load straps to hand, and use them, for other jobs.... havn't made a video on the use of a lift, and it could be a good subject for those buying in to one... there are a few safety advises, like never leave it on the hydraulics, always rest it on the prop lock, in case the seals fail, etc etc., so thank you for the nudge, and may well do that video soon...
Is it the same for triumph t120 as it has abs system fitted.

I believe so, but haven't done one myself yet, the simple mechanical concept of any ABS system is that you can change it, like this, as long as you don't switch on the ignition or introduce air in to the system... but I would check with your manual first, or if not sure, check with your main dealer to be sure !
My friend has a 2010 softail heritage and the rear brake bleeder screw is stripped and needs to be replaced. Do you have a video on how to do that.
As the bleed valve had a hole down the centre, you can use an "Easyout" tool to grip it.. and maybe soak it in penetrating oil over night first, and a little heat on the caliper body to expand the alloy away from the steel a little... ? hope that helps and good luck with it.. Del.

What happens if you get air in the line but don’t turn ignition on. Can you still bleed it lit like normal? I got a little air in mine and bled it out like normal and everything seems to work fine. Not sure if need to take to dealer to check for air in abs
As long as you bled it out it'll be fine.. but just test the braking function carefully on a test ride to be sure. !

Hello,sir! I have a problem with my '83 Honda cb400n and maybe you can help me. The left cylinder isn't running when the bike idles and at low rpm. I've cleaned the carbs,there is spark and compression is 140psi on both cylinders. If I hit the gas,the left cylinder is comming to life. There is also some backfire in the right carburetor and the exaust at hi rpm. Can you give me some advise? Thank you
88nastase: With any luck Del & Pen will be out getting their knees in the breeze right now, but until they get back try this -
It sounds like you have air getting in where it shouldn't be, eg. somewhere between the carb jets & the intake valve. Check for any leaks on the carb mountings by running a finger of grease around the joint while at tickover (if the revs pick up, you've found at least one leak!) Also make sure any vacuum hoses ( for fuel taps/ carb balancing bungs etc.) are in good shape & connected up properly.
Failing all that, check the fuel float heights are OK & then, while you're in there, blow all the jets through again with carb cleaner for good measure. Good luck : )
Lod dude I have sprayed some starter fluid on all places that could suck air. The idle remains the same! Only when I spray in the intake of the left carb,the cylinder turns to life!
Wow - squirt ether up my nostril & I'd wake up! Careful with that stuff, one 'spitback' & you'll be on ebay looking for new facial hair.
Basically, if there's fuel in the bowl & the suction's good but it doesn't want to drink, then something's not right with the carb - holey diaphragm?
88nastase - as Lod dude said, sounds like a vacuum leak, so check everything he said, and one more thing, check for a balance hose missing between the carbs, some of the early 80's bikes had little 1" rubber hoses running side to side between the carbs to balance the vacuum, check it's not gone missing, or split.... good luck with it !

Heard stories about dealers charging a fortune to do this. I have changed brake lines in the past but not on abs model

Hi Jon, this is the biggest thorn in the side of anyone wanting to put apes on an ABS bike, as you've seen, your front hose goes down to a connector block which is welded in, and the only option is to buy brackets from the dealer, a new complete set of hoses for the ABS as well, with the front long enough to fit your bars... I wanted to put 18" apes on my Switchback, but got a four-figure quote from the dealer, so when I stopped laughing, I decided to go a different route and save the apes for another bike a different day...! even if you can fit a longer hose on the front yourself, then bleeding them up from dry is gonna be a dealer only task... even looked in to how to junk my ABS, but once again, it's a typical Harley Davidson nightmare as it's all tied in to the ECU for some stupid reason... it's a case of technology hindering, rather than helping, yet again!

I know how you feel mate, i was gutted as i would really love some 18" hooners on my Switchback, make it look proper RAZA stylee.. but its just too much money.. so for now i went with some bars from an XR1200, they're a little wider and higher, and dont look so goofy as the factory bars... they'll do me for no..! maybe scout round, see what else you could fit that the brake hise would reach.. take the master cylinder off the bar and lift it up to see ho much slack you actually have.. ?.. you never know, maybe a mini ape bar would fit.?
Moonfleet41 I already have fitted the 2" riser blocks and drag bars and the brake line is at the maximum stretch so will have to be satisfied with that. Harley Davidson are robbing gits lol

haha that would be cool, we wold have to have a section on what tea and cakes are best advised for what jobs in your bike ! Personally, I like a coffee and Hobnobs when fabricating, but servicing, prefer tea and a Kitkat (with a disclaimer that other beverages are available!) haha
Quite partial to a mug of tea and bourbons when doing an oil change put that in the book, all the best del.
Could you do an outside walk around of the street fighter project for the next vid ?
It's a bit of a mess at the mo buddy, and none of the bodywork is bolted on to it, wanna get a little further with the tail panel, maybe get it in to it's finished shape and primer, and then will be ready to walk round it, still have a little fab to do o the tank and gonna make an adjustment to the headlight cowling too - won't be long buddy!
Will do buddy, got a few more bits of fab to do, the bodywork isn't mounted on properly yet, and need to finish the tail end and a few other jobs, but once that's done, will certainly do a walk round buddy !
Not to mention that Harley has had recalls on the ABS system due to NOT changing break fluid.
Really?, i didn't know that, but im not surprised, its daft not to include a brake fluid change in with the 10k service, that way at least it would get picked up on menu serving eventually.. at the moment, its common practice for most owners to just do the mileage service and assume everything is done, not all owners are mechanically minded, and many will just defer to the odometer for the reminder to take it in for service.. they dont know, or want to know what has to actually be done.. that should be the responsibility of the dealer... but you know how many companies are.."we did what we were asked to do, the brake fluid wasn't part of the service so we didn't do it, not our fault"... it seems with what you say, that it takes the factory, (probably following complaints or warranty claims) to instruct the dealers to do their job properly by means of an official recall.... Its yet more proof that bike dealers are in the business of making money, and the directors of these dealerships care little for thier customers accept to sell them the next bike..!
