I for one couldn't wait to turn 40 when i was 18 because of my grandfather. I Remember him coming to visit the family and he'd always wear these cardigans or turtlenecks, Mostly in brown, grey or black. He looked so cool in them that one time i stole a brown cardigan of his and never gave it back. To the youth 40 and beyond is old and that's fine. But damn it's nice to be able to wear cool distinguish pieces of clothes at my age. Don't have to worry to much about trends or fashion. Casual dark or light colors is the way to go and by the way men age like fine wine.
I'll be 40 in a few years and I feel way closer to being in my prime than I ever was. My looks and fitness seem to get better and better over the years and I'm noticed by alot more women now. It also helps to be more confident. Some of us reach our peak later, not in our 20s.
39 years and 11 months me is in every way far more impressive than 20 year old me. I'm lighter, faster, stronger, taller, smarter, and definitely better funded.
I don't buy what's "trendy". I buy what fits my style, wich I have - I'm old enough for that. And I'm in shape so I still have and sometimes wear clothes wich I wore literally forty years ago. What I never get are men who dress as five year olds. Your channel was suggested by RUclips. I have no interest at all, because I have my style. But you got me hooked for several videos. That's because besides your obvious beauty you have a very likable and intelligent way to talk and a pleasant voice.
@@stylishlyrugged3372 You're welcome to disagree. I watched the video because I'm interested in learning new things but, in general, men don't care if we're called young, old, older/mature. I know where I stand. It is important and what I am. I am a curious person and I like to look good and to explore and I consider specially, a woman's perspective to be "important".
I enjoy most of your videos but this one reminded me of not only how young you are but of the world you live in/were raised in. Im a fit 47 and I spend alot of time outdoors. Most of my wardrobe is t-shirts, jeans and cargo shorts and I prefer sandals or hiking boots to all other footwear. I do have some nice button ups and dress pants for special occasions, but I can't wear sweaters indoors, they make me sweat too much. I'll wear a nice flannel as an overshirt and tie it around my waist when inside. I value your insight on many things...but this 'old guy' is pretty happy with his lack of fashion sense. 😉👍 All the same, I love your channel and keep up the good work.
My wife is glad I found this video, at 46 I lost 30 pounds and changed up my style and she definitely appreciates it. Now that I am economically secure I have time to enjoy.
Boots, jeans, a dress shirt & a tie are always fun. Pick a gaudy or goofy tie for casual occasions to show that you have a sense of humor; and pick a formal tie when you need to remind others that you're an Old BAMF.
I'm 54 but have been told I look much younger. I've heard the "Dad jeans" term before, but thanks for actually explaining what it is. I'll have to get rid of about a dozen pairs. I buy the dark ones, but they don't stay that way. I have the Dad sneakers too. But at least I have some better looking Pumas to wear instead. Now my biggest question is: "Can I still wear socks with dressier shoes?" I can't stand the bare ankle thing. Sorry, just can't do it....
As a single guy, still in the dating scene in his forties, I am not ready to retire... These are the best days in my life, and I dress trendy and fashionable because a lot of the younger women that I attract to me appreciate that. Just because you are more experienced does not make you an "old man"... Age is a number on a piece of paper, young or old is a mental attitude!
@stepentuthill4598 : Agreed !! many of us dudes are doing better at this age in many ways !! Serious question tho (not being snarky): would you or do wear skinny jeans ?
I just turned 70 this year and I work out 5 days a week I'm in better shape than I was in my 20 30 or forty I have my own style I watch what other men in the public eye and adjust it too my style I enjoy your videos keep posting them
I left a couple silly comments, okay that said you did give some really good advice. You are so right about quality over quantity.. I must go clean out my closet now🤓
I just turned 50 and my biggest problem is finding what to wear when I run errands (supermarket, homedepot, target). I live in hot South Florida and I usually end up making the mistake of wearing gym clothes when I do those errands. The imposter syndrome kicks in when I do that. Maybe I would feel better if I will run those errands after I workout, but I don't go to the gym. Any suggestions? A video with this subject would be helpful. Thanks.
Very true. But, be careful. All kt takes is a teen to start making thay very comfortable look popular/trendy then they will start to tell you that you are trying to look young. When you have wore the same style for years way before a trend. Take crocs for example. Older people and nurses wore crocs. Now they are in fashion with younger people. Not that I ever would wear crocs. But, today if I wore them, I would be TRYING to look young ?!?! 😒Smh
Excellent commentary. It’s important to dress your age but not make your age an issue. Questions: Do you think guys 40 plus should wear socks with casual attire? And. What color should the socks be? Thoughts Apple or Garmin watches?
I'm 38 but I like a lot of those things. I have my light blue jeans and black t-shirt and bikers leather jacket. And yes I have a pair of gold and white retro nike jordans lol. I've been wanting to step up my game for a long time!
Hi courtney, I am a 64 years old, I work out every day and have always had a great scense of style throughout my life. Everything you just mentioned here, I have multiples of-- I just wanted to congradulte you for your depth of knowledge at such a young age! Keep up the good work.
Courtney, thank you so much for this video. I think there are other issues that you should address for older men, which I believe will make your channel more popular. For instance, nobody talks about fashion in the Sunshine State of Florida. Here it is summer all year round. Men come down from other states and stay here through the winter. So it's very difficult to wear the type of clothes that you were showing in this video down here in Florida. So perhaps a show on hot weather fashion. Secondly should older men's pants touch their shoes or rise above the shoes by an inch or so? Should men wear socks when wearing long pants? In today's styles it seems like the fashion is a bit snug around the arms and legs. Should this hold true for older men's fashion? Should older men still wear T shirts with shorts or should we wear a button down shirt? And what about fashions for big men? I am approximately 6' 1" and weigh approximately 270 pounds. I find it difficult to look good because of the large belly. So how do we dress to to look good? Thanks. I enjoy your channel!
I'll be 40 this year. I appreciate how you use gentleman, sophisticated, mature, timeless, cool, classy, and modern as goals for older men. Courtney you are awesome!
Well, as a 43 year old, i've always dressed a bit younger. That means you don't have to run behind every trend but pick simple, classic, good fitting neutral tones. That's it basically. No large prints, no baggy clothes, no xxl chunky sneakers. It all comes to developing your own taste. And you should always wear a watch:)))
@@Swearengen1980 There are literally thousands of different watches in thousand different styles, so you can pick one that suits you the best! You're not the brightest are you???
@@tommyboy71000 You might want to try thinking before you type. I'm not the brightest? You're not even functionally retarded, are ya? Some people's taste is, they don't like watches. Not everyone likes wearing jewelry or anything on their body. That's a personal preference. You're saying everyone should wear a watch is a judgement that contradicts personal style or preference. I never said nor implied that anyone has to wear a specific type of watch and you lose your shit over the variety of watches that is completely irrelevant. I don't care if there are a million varieties of watches; I'm not wearing one because your stupid ass thinks it's some kind of requirement. Sorry sport, go back to middle school and try reading comprehension again. The point was, NO, not everyone NEEDS to wear a watch.
I'm 58, and have decided to donate my out of date clothes. In addition to what you've already said, I've invested in timeless dress shoes as well. Thanks for your insight.
Nailed it 99%, one disagreement (for some men) most cargo pants have poofy pockets and look silly, however Duluth Firehouse and Firehouse Flex have flat pockets and are great for guys who can't practically carry a bag. I'm an executive for a small business, my daily wear is Duluth Firehose Flex pants, high quality steel toe work boots always polished, a well fitted quality T or pull over depending on the season. I keep worn or stained pants, shirts, and boots in my office for when I know I might get dirty. I'm in the coatings business and often on factory floors with the potential to get dirty. Plus by dressing just above the workers I get more respect than dressing in a suit, make friends more easily, and am more approachable. The rest of your list is perfect!!! I happen to have my father's wing tips from when he got his first job, mint condition, third set of soles. Quality matters. The same shoes today cost close to $400. My boots over $500 and as high as $800. If it's between you and the ground spend money on it gentlemen. Shoes, tires, mattresses, furniture, office chairs, etc. Your body will thank you!
You're not saying anything us "old" guys don't already know. One thing about being older are the life experiences and the knowledge you pick up along the way. It makes hearing someone on their 20's or 30's trying to sound like an expert actually sound like someone in their 20's or 30's. lol
Great vid as a 45 year old man I always find it hard to stay stylish without looking like the older guy trying to look younger. Great tips! Keep em coming!!!
Decent shirt and shoes and you're better dressed than most men you see on the street. At 57 I'm just getting into upping my clothing game. Fun, and you don't have to break the bank.
Thanks for the food for thought. 40 probably seems old until you're 40 or older. Not really a problem, there's always a lot to think about and enjoy! Enjoyed the video.
I am 57 years old and I think that this video is really good advice for men of almost any age. When it comes to layering, I even like to wear a thin turtle neck sweater under a casual shirt topped off with a tweed sports jacket. I have had many compliments on this combination and it allows me the latitude to wear almost any kind of pants that I want. I call it casual/sharp.
Great video Courtney. I'm glad you recommended loafers, as I've sworn by them my entire adult life. Call me old-fashioned, but you didn't mention hats at all; I'd be interested in your opinion on that subject.
However, they’re still entitled to wear decent modest jeans, t-shirts (in warm weather), hoodies and other comfortable clothes based on their own personal tastes as long as they’re more decent and doesn’t look boorish or gangsterish
@courtneyryan You say don't dress like Kanye is a guy who 's over 40. I believe in still buying what's in but then again I'm in the public eye! 👍 I do now wear a nice watch that I think guys over 40 should wear.....
Clearly she isn't a person I want advice from if she looks at people over 40 as their days are numbered. One day she will be 23 and look at her lost youth
You're NOT old but.. the clothes you buy will probably last for the rest of your life 🤣🤣🤣 Good one ;) As you get older, your potential in life decreases, that's a fact; deal with it. Do the best you can with what you've got and accept that you ARE relatively OLDER.
Disagree about wearing an expensive watch. I use my cell phone to keep track of time. Plus now there’s random robberies here in LA of men wearing expensive watches. Not street smart! But having just been fitted magnificently by the wardrobe department on a tv show, I agree with everything else you suggested! (And I’m 56!).
This is a good primer for us older gentlemen. I personally already adhere to some of your points you presented and I want to thank you for educating me on other things. Great insight Courtney !
I am 70, still pretty trim because I am naturally slim and do some exercise. I love cargo shorts but I would like to have a classy look too. My wife is even more casual than I but I’ve noticed a couple of comments that hinted that she wouldn’t mind a bit more class, the first being pleas to wear my ‘blue jeans’. They are nice but I felt they might show my slightly rounder belly, which I then felt like hiding under a shirt. Other questions now. First, do men really carry those bags around all the time? Two, I can where a pretty thin looking pair of jeans but I don’t like low cut pants even if they are in style. So could you address rise in pants? Can I where my champagne brown shoes with other colors? Should it match my belt?. Now, the big one. I really don’t think the tight suits nowadays look classy because they look too small . Also, I love comfortable clothes so how should I stretch the limits of suits without looking like I bought mine in 1960? I know. I’m requesting a whole show just for me.
Haha I respect their initial politeness and then if appropriate, I kindly and simply ask them to call me by (first name). And I live in a southern state. They routinely chuckle and respond, “Sure. Thanks.”
I am 61 and my wardrobe has never looked better. I prefer chinos to jeans because they fit me better. Really if you just keep yourself groomed and have clothes that fit well you are ahead of the norm by a mile. Oh, and keep your shoes shined gents. Dirty shoes are a look killer.
@@CourtneyRyan Don't worry Courtney, as a guy in my early 30s, but with the crankiness and knee problems of someone in his 80s, I'm definitely OLD now :D As far as I'm concerned, 40 is basically dead and if I make it that far it'll be a miracle!
Clothes for the rest of your life? Im sorry but 40 isnt death age. More guys are getting into the best shape of their life at 45 40s doesnt mean moldy old fogy like it did years ago cmon girl get it together
As I approach 40 this year, and have been updating and upgrading my wardrobe the passed year, I see this video. It's nice to know my decisions are reinforced while reinventing.
I’m surprised that Courtney neglected to mention what I regard as the most important part of the over 50 male wardrobe: The fedora. Any man over 50 should be comfortable wearing a nice hat. Not a cap mind you, a hat.
Great, Courtney! I am 40, and for a man of simplicity like me, you made total sense. Not too much with the accessories and all, but, "Sophistication and Substance", that's all that actually matters.
People who have money and good taste. So I'm eliminating celebrities and I'm eliminating sports players. I'm talking about people who are educated sophisticated entrepreneurs or old money people they dress ultra high quality less is more and it shows. So the guy who looks like a punk or who dresses like he just got off Saturday Night Fever to a more contemporary look they are hobos. If you wear a business suit or a sport coat of some sort you want Oxxford or Brioni. You want John lobb shoes, the classic 1953 Gucci loafer in an exotic skin or brown or black not the ones that have the cheese all over them that makes you look like Super Fly. Timeless Classics things that never go out of style. If you're on more of a budget go Brooks Brothers always buy things on sale. Never pay retail wait until it's half off typically it's twice a year some things never go on sale like the two suits I mentioned they are top of the line and worth it and will last you the rest of your life. It's worth it to have your shirts custom tailored. If they are done properly again they will last you the rest of your life they will fit you perfectly and make you look polished and in control. Stay away from necklaces and bracelets unless you want to look like a Goomba. I would also suggest staying away from wearing a Rolex watch because frankly it's a wannabe anymore. Everyone knows what they are blah blah blah save your money and buy a Patek Philippe or something that is only known to someone who appreciates high quality. Oh, loose the Bible Sandles and dude, flip flops belong on the beech. Ladies don't have men feet fetishes. Refine Be unassuming
I am 35 years old and going through a little bit of a fashion transition. I can definitely see myself in a lot of the stuff you listed but I also think I can get away with lighter jeans for a little longer lol
Hello I'm 46 but don't feel old sorry, good tips though, a pair of brouges is always good as well as a nice check shirt and schoffel gillet, barbour or belstaff coat. I still have my rm williams boots I bought in Perry Street in 1996
YES! One of the few advantages of age is knowing what looks good (on me) and what doesn’t. Again, your simple, sensible advice is on the nose, Courtney. Thanks!
Courtney, I really appreciate your vids. I’m mid 40s and haven’t dated since was a punk in my 20s. This vid is good info… but I live in AZ. It’s hard to wear some of these outfits due to the heat. Any thoughts on doing a vid for people in climates like mine?
I think it doesn't have to be that hard. Fitting linen pants or light chinos. A plain polo or a button down shirt with rolled up sleeves. Match your shoes with your belt. Add a stylish Panama hat, maybe a nice watch and you're set :) You'll be already dressed better than 80% of men you meet on the street.
Hi Courtney, another really helpful and informative video for me as a man in his 50s. I think I best get some shopping done to 'up my style game'. PS My wife kept saying "Absolutely" and "Yes" during your video, so she obviously really liked it too. Many thanks Noel
I think the example ( guy reading paper with foot on the table @ 4.06) used in this particular video wearing a suit with no socks - is not great style advice, not just for the 'mature' man ....but for anyone.
Hi, love your videos. As a 57 yr old widower I find your videos very informative, about baldness and dress etc but when you say put your stuff from your cargo pants into a bag, well you lost me there. Cargo pants are men's version of bags but coz there they are attached to my clothing I can't lose them on a train, plane or automobile and if sh7t hits the fan my multitool is in my pocket. Lol. Seriously though, cargo pants till the day I die. I might be able to dig my way out.....
Very good advice. I always make a conscience effort to dress age appropriate. (I’m 55 yrs old). I opt for fashion not fad. Having said that, what is the deal with finishing an outfit by not wearing socks?! I will never understand this. I see pictures that you post of men wearing lots of layers for winter and then no socks. Can you please explain this to me? Not to convince me to go sockless, but to at least understand the reasoning.
Josh Harrell Pretty much anything without going to extreme. Any color any type of wash jeans. But not torn and too much distracted. T-shirts of course, but avoid logos. Classic type sneakers, and any type of shoes. Replace hoodies with bomber and leather jackets. Buy couple of scarves. One navy color blazer for going out. Thatks pretty much it.
Getting clothes that fit is most important, IMO, so know your sizes and get friendly w a tailor. A sport coat or blazer (NOT a suit coat) w jeans and a button-down is my usual look... generally with a pair of boots (Thursday Boot Co makes a great dress/casual boot). Wear a belt that's in the same chroma-range as the shoes (black w black, brn w brn) and, if possible, match your chosen watch to the vibe and style. Details make the package and may not even be noticed, but doing it wrong will be glaring and obvious. I had a buddy ask me one time why I always look "put together" (I'm a still a slob for chores, auto work, etc). I told him I do the exact same as him: pants, shirt, shoes, jacket... just different "styles". Casual and relaxed but not pretentious or over-dressed. BTW, I'm a 54 yr old truck driver, not a bucks-up hedge fund guy. I watch for sales and even look at Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores for items.
Well fitting chinos, quarter zip sweaters, Chelsea boots, chukka boots, loafers and a nice pair of brogues or double monk straps. So many choices like Woodies chinos, Johnny-O quarter zips, and Allen Edmonds shoes. Quality over quantity for sure!

Your channel was suggested by RUclips. I have no interest at all, because I have my style. But you got me hooked for several videos. That's because besides your obvious beauty you have a very likable and intelligent way to talk and a pleasant voice.

@Mike Tran Huh?
We are men, we don't care about things like that.
@@miguelcustodio2177 I disagree. We do and should. I assume you do as well. Why else would you be watching this video?
All the same, I love your channel and keep up the good work.
My wife is glad I found this video, at 46 I lost 30 pounds and changed up my style and she definitely appreciates it. Now that I am economically secure I have time to enjoy.
Beware, she is prolly insecure that you are going to leave her.

Boots, jeans, a dress shirt & a tie are always fun.

So true, I’m in my early 40s I dress trendy and the younger women love it. I’m loving my 40s

The man purse doesn't work for me. I need my stuff on my person.
I carry a small bag over my shoulder to keep my iPhone and accessories in
I just turned 50 and my biggest problem is finding what to wear when I run errands (supermarket, homedepot, target). Thanks.
Always been a denim/flannel shirt and jeans kind of guy for knock around/casual wear. Comfort never goes out of style.
Down here in SW Florida, we old timers break out the leather flip flops for those special occasions. 😂
I'm 38 but I like a lot of those things. I have my light blue jeans and black t-shirt and bikers leather jacket. And yes I have a pair of gold and white retro nike jordans lol. I've been wanting to step up my game for a long time!

Any man at 50 and over should wear a fedora when they are outside.
I am in my 30's and I can't wait to get to my 40's because that's when Men really look like a fine bottle of wine.
Well said Tomaz 👏
Contradiction must? You can't say to develop your own taste and then tell people they should always wear a watch. 🤦♂
It makes hearing someone on their 20's or 30's trying to sound like an expert actually sound like someone in their 20's or 30's. lol
As someone in their early 40’s this is great advice. Thank you.

I think 40 year olds and 50 year olds dress differently.
While none should dress like 20 year olds they don't really look like each other.
However, they’re still entitled to wear decent modest jeans, t-shirts (in warm weather), hoodies and other comfortable clothes based on their own personal tastes as long as they’re more decent and doesn’t look boorish or gangsterish

As you get older, your potential in life decreases, that's a fact; deal with it.
Another good video! BTW - “older” has a much better sound to it than “old”. Keep em coming, Courtney.
Haha I totally agree! Thanks Will! ❤️
She's basically saying if you're 40+ you look like shit, and therefore should wear clothing that makes people think you're wealthy and powerful.

@@CourtneyRyan Don't worry Courtney, as a guy in my early 30s, but with the crankiness and knee problems of someone in his 80s, I'm definitely OLD now :D As far as I'm concerned, 40 is basically dead and if I make it that far it'll be a miracle!

Refine

Hi, love your videos. As a 57 yr old widower I find your videos very informative, about baldness and dress etc but when you say put your stuff from your cargo pants into a bag, well you lost me there.
"Old" is considered everything that is 15 years older than oneself. So yeah, 40 is "old" for her...

What should a fashionably conscious mid 40’s guy wear when their lifestyle doesn’t warrant suits outside of rare special occasions?
