  • Brad Bird is leaving Disney for Skydance Animation, headed by his old Pixar boss John Lasseter. And he's not the only one. Word is that the directors of Wreck-It-Ralph and Tangled are also moving over from the Mouse House. Apparently John Lasseter isn't as 'cancelled' as the media would like too think he is...

I genuinely believe that Steve's dismissal was because Disney wanted to use Kermit in projects he wasn't comfortable with. They don't understand that the main reason the Muppets have been so popular is because a lot of that is born from the performers own personality. It bugs me when people call the performers "voice actors," because that completely trivializes how much they put into their work. (Sorry for the tangent, I'm just a huge Muppet fan lol)

I wonder if he only stayed at Pixar as long as he did because he wanted to protect the studio. And now that the writing's on the wall with everything getting plopped on D+ (and I predict a merger into Disney Animation Studios), he might as well go join his old friend.

I understand that different people have different boundaries, but HUGGING should not require legal action. Just pull the person aside and say that hugging makes you uncomfortable, and make sure it’s not said vaguely. If they keep trying to hug you, THEN a court order makes sense because that would be harassment. Involving the courts for just HUGGING is a waste of everyone’s time.

    1. They are unable to keep talent due to cost cutting and rising salaries of the top brass
    2. The company's sheer arrogance that been appearing in the last few years
    3. Unable to take real critics advice/warnings
    4. Chasing the wrong kinds of people and listening to twitter far to much instead of a much boarder view, where they listen to various soical media platforms, not just the one platform that seems to scream the loudest
    5. Unable to figure out where they should be going with the company and its various brands, to me, from what I can tell, Lucasfilm & Marvel don't really have much of a long term game plan and they are just winging it, espeically Lucasfilm, so I just cannot see a long term future where it remains seperate of its parent company

Brad bird is one of my favorite directors. Despite the faults of incredibles 2(though from what I heard it's issues seems to have been a studio and development hell issue rather then him), I still love it as well as his other animated films(though I still need to see the iron giant), and he's gonna do great at Skydance.
Here's hoping more new studios, Dreamworks and illumination(yes, I'm actually a fan of them and tbh I look forward to their movies more then disney's nowadays) keep up the good work and give disney the message that their monopoly won't last forever and if they want to stay relevant they need to make quality, not quantity. Oh, and stop shifting everything pixar to disney plus!

"(though from what I heard it's issues seems to have been a studio and development hell issue rather then him)"
I've heard the same thing, that the movie had a year cut from its development time halfway through production.
When you look at the history of Brad Bird movies, from what I can tell all of the ones that have issues there's something behind the scenes you can point to where any "Bad" Brad Bird movie probably isn't Bird's fault but the result of some kind of behind-the-scenes production meddling and someone else getting in Bird's way.

Reminds me of how a bunch of OG devs at BioWare jumped ship too some years ago, Mass Effect Andromeda was a failure, Anthem was a godawful dead corpse of a game, and there's no hope for Dragon Age to make a comeback after all that's happened.
Basically the same thing that's leading a crushing blow of incompetence in the Gaming industry technical blunders is all the long time veteran developers bailing out.
Sounds familiar to the comics industry, right? Now here with Animation.
This can't be a coincidence, right?

Not only can we have great animated movies in the future, but it can also open the red light for Disney to stop making live-action remakes of old movies and go back to making good stories full of creativity for everybody.

Given what I've heard here, Brad Bird's decision couldn't have been easy, but he made the right call. With all these veterans teaming up to make so many great projects, clamping down on Disney's monopoly, and the possibility of Don Bluth's return, we might just get the mother of all animation renaissances. Speaking of Bluth, there's a book he's writing about his animation career, but it will not be available until July 19th.

“If you start seeing a decline of quality at Pixar…” That ship has sailed. Lasseter’s name on a project was almost always a seal of quality (some notable exceptions, but those weren’t twisted they were just kinda ‘meh’), I think Pixar’s stories have gotten noticeably worse for awhile now, and Brad bailing is just going to hasten that decline. Looking forward to seeing what Skydance puts out. Just as I automatically write off anything Disney does as garbage, it’ll be nice to have a studio I can trust for quality as a default. Time will tell, but this sounds promising.

    Just a little correction-
Rich Moore did leave Disney, but he didn't moved to Skydance with Lasseter. Instead he chose to go for Sony and produce "Vivo".
Nathan Greno on the over hand did leave disney to direct an animation movie at Skydance, but it was before Lasseter was hired there. The reason why he probably left Disney was because Lasseter shut down his movie "Gigantic". So it's not guarantee that he will stay there.
But yes, there is a gigantic wave of directors that are leaving Disney and Pixar.
Here is a short list of some of them that I remember:
Rich Moore (for Sony), Nathan Greno (for Skydance), John Musker and Ron Clements (for Warner), Chris Williams (for Netflix), John Ripa, Lee Unkrich, Mark Andrews.
Call it conspiracy if you want, but I think that most of them left because the dismissal of Lasseter.

As for John Lasseter, I still respect his work and since many people spoke highly about him, I believe them. I don't think those allegations are as awful as the media says. MeToo started out fine, but spiraled into being offended about everything, so its hard to take seriously anymore. Bird and Lasseter working together again can only lead to great and innovative things, unlike Disney who doesn't have any creativity left.

Frankly, the only abuse allegation I've believed since Harvey Weinstein was put in the slammer is Christina Ricci's accusations against her ex husband. The reasoning for this is that she keeps to herself when she's not acting, never tries to take advantage of the social climate, and has moved on with her new husband without bitching about her old one to try and gain more sympathy points. Aside from her, I assume that almost all of the women who make abuse allegations these days are riding the Me Too movement. Amber Heard has almost single handedly made it into a joke.

Skydance seems to be the modern DreamWorks, as DE was also founded by disgruntled Disney and Pixar employees. I believe Lord Farquad from Shrek is loosely based on an exec or something that one of the animators had an issue with 😂
While DreamWorks is a very mixed bag for the most part, I do enjoy most of their catalogue and they’ve created How to Train Your Dragon, Rise of the Guardians, and The Croods. My top favorite movies hands down, I’ll fight anyone who disrespects them 🤣 Shrek is such a cultural icon, Kung Fu Panda to an extent, and The Prince of Egypt is so good even non animation fans enjoy it.
They’ve also seem to find a better groove with their shows (again, baring a few projects *cough notShe-Ra cough*) like Troll Hunters, Trolls, and Dragons. With the right team and leadership, DW can easily top Disney and Pixar. Cause no way was Toy Story 4 more deserving of the Oscar than How To Train Your Dragon 3, which I will concede can be overlooked by Klaus. But not TS4.
Anyway, I will laugh if Skydance and DreamWorks end up dominating the animation sphere. Maybe that will finally kick Disney/Pixar to actually try over coasting on name brand.
