  • It's the battle of the clays! Sorry this video is quite a bit longer than usual, but I wanted to be totally thorough. Here we're taking a look at the new CLUTCH clay by TheSalonGuy and how it measures up to two of the most popular clays, Cavalier by BluMaan and Claymation by Hanz de Fuko.

    Hey all, I meant to mention in the video what my process was for testing in terms of prestyling etc but just plain forgot! So if you're wondering, as I was testing these, I only prestyled with a bit of 25 Spray for smoothing/defrizz, blow dried, then applied the clay. I didn't use any prestylers to add extra hold, and also did not use any hair spray at the end.

      I agree! Very detailed feedback in every category. I used claymation but had to use hairspray every time because the hold wasn't that great. My hair thickness is medium so heavy clays are a bit too heavy. I will definitely have to try clutch! Seems like the kinda clay I've been hoping to finally find somewhere.
      I have a question though.. Have you ever tried kevin murphy "rough rider"? No one ever does any reviews on it and it is apparently really good! Maybe you could review it :)

    • @TDMStyle

      Hard to say, they are all very different from one another. Clutch I feel gives me a very consistent result so I always know I can count on it. Fuertes keeps my hair nice and soft, while Rough Rider is more along the lines of a traditional heavy clay. All are great in their own way!

    I have tried Arcadian, Dead Sea, Daimon Barber, First Hand Supply, and Jack Henry. Personally, I have found that the only clay that gives me the hold I want is Baxters (well, Jack Henry has great hold, but the washout is tough). How does Clutch compare to Baxters?

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  6 лет назад

      I’m a big fan of Baxter’s clay as well, and honestly for me Clutch still outperforms it. I find Clutch to have a similar hold level (higher if you layer it in), more of a matte finish, and washes out way more easily.

  • @druex5h824

    I have fine hair and use claymation, it holds all day long. I barley have to fix it through out the day. But later this week i’m getting original and hybrid by blumaan in the mail, can’t wait to test these out together. Have you tried these two together, if so did it work well?

    • @TDMStyle

      They do work well together - Hybrid on its own doesn’t have a very high hold for me, so prestyling with Original helped add more.

    Hey man. Nice video and great channel btw. Quick question for ya: I have super thick coarse hair and I often find that oil based pomades work best for me because I don't really like products that dry super hard/crunchy or are too matte. The only downside with that, of course, is they aren't as easy to wash out. I was wondering, do you have a go-to shampoo that you use that's great at getting rid of oil-based product residue? Thanks.

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  6 лет назад

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  5 лет назад +3

      Hmm. Cavalier is a very oily clay so it's odd that it would cause dandruff. You may want to look into the shampoo and conditioner that you're using, and that is more likely what is drying out your scalp.

    I have thick and rather course hair and I found clutch to be rather sticky and dry when I was breaking it down and applying it to my hair, it kinda felt like the ORIGINAL Original By Blumaan (Black). Thought it was going to be a little creamier and easier to apply but turns out its the opposite, I couldn't really distribute the product evenly throughout my hair due to it being way too sticky and dry. I have both Claymation & Cavalier clays as well and in my opinion Clutch feels stickier and drier than both of them.. kinda disappointed :/

      Ryan Ng sorry to hear that. Are you applying it to dry hair, on its own?

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  6 лет назад

      Sorry to hear. I’ve found it can seem a bit sticky/dry if I’m applying it to bone-dry hair with nothing else in it, if my hair is having one of its coarser-feeling days. You might have an easier time if you try applying some kind of anti-frizz or smoothing serum as a prestyler before blowdrying, then add Clutch.

    • @hairymangosteen
      @hairymangosteen 6 лет назад

      I used 25 Spray as a prestyler, like how Matt did and it felt dry. But I would try using a slightly oiler prestyler like PM's Super Skinny Serum and see if it works out!

    • @TheSalonGuy

      Ryan Ng ok. I really need to see pics of your actual hair type man. 25 Spray, 3-4 pumps, literally transforms and reconstructs your hair so it is almost impossible to make it dry. I have Plush which is my serum for smoothing. If you have coarse, wavy, frizzy or curly hair clutch wouldn’t be my choice of product UNLESS you blow dry it fully straight/smooth first, then apply it. This is where advice from a stylist can help. Dm me pics of your hair on Instagram.

    • @ItsTheMasterWoo
      @ItsTheMasterWoo 6 лет назад

      Nailed the description- Baxter and Clutch have similar waxy feel and ways they hold. They're both frm hold in the light-medium-firm-heavy spectrum. Cavalier is the heaviest best holding clay in the market tho, which is why it's so sought after!

    • @jsuisebfeu
      @jsuisebfeu 6 лет назад

      Luke In terms of hold, I don't think you need a super heavy thing. I have very thick hair, and personally, I can do pretty good build ups from the Flagship clay, which is labelled as a firm.

    For the price category you'll be using more clutch each morning as opposed to Cavalier, so really the better bang for your buck is Blumaan.

    • @TDMStyle

      Not true for me. I use the same amount of Clutch that I would Cav for the same result in terms of hold. Same price and Clutch has an extra ounce of product.

      Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you liked the video! As far as Quicksand though, it is totally different from Clutch. Quicksand is essentially a jar of diatomaceous earth and honestly makes my hair feel like a dry tangled rat’s nest. No shade either, just the honest truth. That stuff just does not work well for me at all, and it is vastly different from Clutch.

    • @alexolal110

      TDM Style for you quicksand is like that for me its a god send. I have super oily, fine hair and it rips away the oil and it allows me to go days for I have to shampoo my hair. Its one of the most unique products I've ever seen. I haven't found anything quite like it. It does wonders for texture as I have bone straight hair and the hold is exceptional just enough to hold everything. The only gripe I have is the smell and beachy feel.

    • @TDMStyle

    You can tell that this review had some backdoor bias.He gave every single point to clutch. Clutch isn’t even a clay....it’s more of a waxy pomade. Because it’s not a clay of course it’s easier to pull out, work into your hands, and work into your hands.
    Also, clays don’t work for everyone mostly because clays are meant for thick hair, not fine/thin hair or normal hair

    • @TheSalonGuy
      @TheSalonGuy 6 лет назад +4

      It's not a waxy pomade at all. Pomades are designed to give shine and this has NO shine and a wax leaves the hair feeling greasy and tangled. CLUTCH does neither. I have tested this on all hair types. Super fine hair I may choose a different product of mine such as Talc or Talc Spray, but because it doesn't leave your hair greasy or oily it works well on most hair types if not all.

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  6 лет назад +4

      It’s not biased, these are my honest opinions. I also literally stated at the end of the video that I’m not calling the other two “bad” - Clutch is just straight up better. And if it wasn’t a clay, it wouldn’t be called a clay. Stephen is a professional and obviously knows how to label his own products.

    • @ItsTheMasterWoo
      @ItsTheMasterWoo 6 лет назад

      Good point, Reid, about the pomade-like aspect of the product. Looking at the ingredients, Kaolin clay is a less significant ingredient than the petrolatum (?!) and wax/oil content. This petro & waxy water-based product definitely would have a hard time having the true matte/dry shine level of a dry clay, which is totally ok. Definitely see that clay like aspect too. Interesting product that sits in both categories.

    • @KryptikToxin
      @KryptikToxin 6 лет назад +3

      TDM Style it's barely a clay dude.. kaolin clay is the only clay used and it's like 7th or 8th on the ingredients list. I have a feeling you may be trying to become an ambassador for the salon guy. You have to have a little more than just a sprinkle of clay in your product to be calling this shit a clay killer lmao

    • @R_BucketsB34
      @R_BucketsB34 6 лет назад +4

      Also, I didn’t mean to say “work into your hands” twice. What I wanted to say “work into your hands and obviously easier to work into your hair.”
      I don’t mean to disrespect the salon guy at all for what he does....I do watch his videos. I just can’t help to get over that a clay is supposed to be harder to mix with your hands and put into your hair. Having it super creamy and light (in my mind) kinda seems shady. Clays are supposed to be heavy because it’s designed for thicker hair. Thicker hair can actually maintain the heaviness of the product. If you put a clay product in like say....thin/fine hair, the product would weigh down the hair. And if you used a very light product on thicker hair, the thicker hair wouldn’t maintain because it’s a lighter product that wouldn’t have a good hold on the hair.
      Finally, the reason why I say “backdoor bias” is because it just so happens that Clutch gets the point every single time. Knowing that all these products are renown with their popularity and perfectionism, there’s no way that one singular product has a landslide of a victory.All these products are really good and basically evenly matched.
      I know this a review and obviously people who will make future videos showing this product battle, but people will have different opinions. This is just my opinion. I hope this brings up healthy discussions in the comments

  • @not.rxnzzo

    This man clearly cheated out cavalier and claymation. It's stupid that he gave a point to clutch for scoop and breakdown because all of those 3 clays are heavy clays and they are supposed to be firm. Cavalier and claymation are firm and clutch isn't so he should've gave the point to either cavalier or claymation. And there is no way that a clay that is supposed to be similar to another that he is reviewing destroys its opponents. PATHETIC.

      @TDMStyle  6 лет назад

      No worries, I respect the feedback man! Honestly though I only used one small fingertip of Cavalier that day, and it still ended up looking like I had way more in there. Truth be told, when I first tried Clutch I thought exactly the same, like “no way this will have a high hold” because it felt so light and creamy. But no joke man, it works amazing. In terms of hold and lightness, you can _kind of_ compare it to Original by Blumaan, in that it provides a high hold with a surprisingly light product.

    I just bought Cavalier Heavy Clay and it's fucking awesome! I've been having trouble with hold even with hair spray but with Blumaan I don't even need hair spray.
    It is difficult to apply but it kind of compensates since you can spend less time styling since THE HOLD IS SO GOOD!
    And the part about Clutch looking good even after sleeping. I get that with Blumaan! I have the most thickest straightest hairtype, East-Asian and its perfect!
    And no, I don't need shampoo to get it out... Comes out easy.

    Is this guy being paid by Clutch? We need more people to make unbiased videos.

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  5 лет назад

      No, “this guy” is not being paid. I don’t do sponsored reviews because in my opinion a “paid review” is not a review, it’s an advert. If you’ve watched my other videos you would know that I’m always honest and forthcoming. I just happen to actually like Clutch a lot because in my opinion it’s a fantastic product and it works very well for me. That doesn’t make me biased. You watch reviews for the reviewer’s opinions on the product, and that’s what you got here. Not to mention the fact that doing a sponsored video without making it inherently clear is a violation of FTC guidelines. If and when I ever do sponsored videos, it will be VERY clear.

  • @eliranerel1569

    You gave 2 points to smell and box shape, those are totally subjective, when you give one point to a subjective issue and then give a point, same amount, to objective issues like hold, finish and so on i just can't take your criticism seriously. You brought and old blumaan box that is no longer branded as such and you compare it to your subjective preferences like "classic tin can look" and you call it a clay killer. Im sorry but giving so many points while you compare outdated branding and giving Same amount of points to minor issues and main issues don't happen that often, it smells fishy to me. Sorry but... Your Unubscribed..

    • @TDMStyle
      @TDMStyle  5 лет назад

      The Blumaan branding now is exactly the same materials, just with different imaging and stickers. Not exactly a major point of contention, especially when in the same breath you’re trying to tell me that I shouldn’t have given so many points (which was ONE by the way) to packaging. In case you didn’t actually watch the video, I specifically mentioned that packaging and scent were both aesthetic categories which have no bearing on the performance of the product itself.
      As far as the whole “clay killer” name - that’s what Clutch was being marketed as by the brand. I didn’t make up the name, and this was also mentioned in the video, which apparently you didn’t hear either.
      In case you haven’t noticed, reviews of anything are subjective. That’s why different reviewers have different opinions on products based on their unique experiences due to their hair type etc etc.
      Sure, the point system could use some work to be more balanced. But you’re gonna unsub because you watched an old video of mine and are salty that I didn’t have the Blumaan packaging that is available now? Give me a fucking break.
      And by the way, your means your. You’re means you are. 🙄
