    They’re confident in their position and know this will not effect them negatively. No plastic swatch will replace the traditional Speedy. Just like Tudor BB hasn’t taken away from the Sub or any of the well made affordable homages. For those that want a Speedy, the MoonSwatch will not suffice or deter. For those that are satisfied with the a MoonSwatch, they were never going to by a Speedy to begin with.

    I think its great for Omega, personally I cant spend 7k on a Speedmaster but I can definately get a MoonSwatch...and once I am able to afford the real thing in steel/gold & all its mechanical glory, I'd definitely get that over a new Rolex with their crazy waiting lists and "preferential customer first" attitude.

    • @theaussiewhinger
      @theaussiewhinger 2 года назад

      This is what I've been saying for years as well. It's really silly to compare them, based on price and also technical aspects. Perhaps it's because Tudor is the accessible brand within the Rolex Family that has caused some people to make this comparison? Also Tudor prices are actually in a bit of a 'quiet' segment - I.e. more expensive than Longines and Tag Heuer but less expensive than Omega.

    This mash-up is more of a threat to Timex, Seiko, and a zillion other entry level quartz offerings ... why buy a $250 beater when you can now have something with the Brand Name of Omega on it now? Assuming we will eventually be able to "buy" the damn thing. Asshats on eBay already have the MoonSwatch going for upwards of 7k! I Most are in the 2-3K range and people are bidding on them. I don't get it. The fact that they released it in limited numbers to choice outlets, causing the frenzy of long lines etc, makes me hate the watch already. IF it comes online for the rest of us for the suggested low price, I'll buy it. Until then, it's just a load of shite IMO.

    Supposedly, there has been an increase in the sales of the omega speedmaster moonwatch according to Fratello.
    I don't even consider the moonswatch as anything but a fun take on the moonwatch. They stand distinctly separate.

    • @vinceslapchopper
      @vinceslapchopper 2 года назад

      Yeah sure, Fratello was able to report an increase in speedmaster sales one day after the moonswatch release. Give me a break, watch journalism has no integrity and is constantly shilling watch companies to get special privileges and access. It's all a bunch of puff pieces with a heavy layer of sugar coating, never any criticism whatsoever for any brand or product they release.

    I think Pete McConnel over at Not So Obvious Watches has the best analysis of all the youtubers I've watched. The Swatch Group has a higher value brand in Glashutte Original so there is no point in moving Omega up to that level/chasing Rolex. A second point that only Pete seems to have mentioned is that most watch influencers today have fondness for Rolex because they remember their dads wearing a Rolex or they saw successful people like doctors wearing Rolex. They remember Rolex on alpha males like James Bond. Well, Rolex has pretty much become unobtainium to those people. Now, that 10-12 years old boy or girl who see his parents wearing an Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster, or Bond wearing a Seamaster, can get his own Swatch Speedie as his first watch. What is going to be his go to brand in 20-30 years when he is ready to celebrate his marriage or first kid?

    Tudor need to bring their game up, a number of issues with their movements, GMT dates, ceramic BB have movement issues, I had a BB58 the action was not great, bezel off too. I personally don't think they are on the level as Omega, Omega have better finishing as well. We all know it was a long term play by Omega/Swatch.

My first thought was it will be a disastrous move for Omega but like you i too am conflicted to the max. Can't decide whether this is a good move or not. Only time will tell if was a genuis move or a disaster that will end up as a case study in every MBA classroom, in a few years.
    You make a good point about the moon Swatch despite being a plastic $250 watch having created more buzz that any Rolex ever did. Some Rolex fanboys consider themselves too dignified to get a moon Swatch but own several Rolexes, more than half of which were bought just to get the one they really wanted. What is so dignified about buying 4 crappy Rolexes for the 1 you really want is beyond me.

    I think you are WAY overthinking this. And I also think you are wrong. The more likely scenario is that Omega was forced into the collaboration by the Swatch group. This release does nothing positive for the omega brand. It only devalues and cheapens it. That being said, it’s a major boost for swatch, which is a major cash machine for the swatch group. You have to remember that, unlike Rolex, Omega is owned by a huge corporation with a profit incentive.

    Speedys are already readily available, and the amount of times they keep rereleasing the same watch over and over has cheapen the speedmaster in a way. I remember seeing a speedy between 3-4K so for them to ever be at 6-7k would be crazy. And not a lot of people are willing to pay that price for that watch. But if you could get that same watch, same esthetic for less then $300 just because it’s plastic and has a quartz movement. Everyone will jump on that. The average person doesn’t care about movements, I bet if swatch put a sistem 51 movement in that watch half of the people wouldn’t know how to wind it. This actually feels like apple, the speedy is the iPhone pro max and these moonSwatch are the 5.9. Yeah it’s not the max, but you at least get to enjoy the basic model.

    Omega needed a new direction. Something fresh, modern, and daring that aligns with today's viral trends. The old school purists seem to be the most upset but that's not the market that Omega should be going after. For the purists, Omega will always trail behind Rolex no matter what Omega does. If Omega continues to play it conservatively following the 'business as usual approach' of other competing luxury brands, then expect nothing extraordinary to result. Instead, Omega needs fresh set of new set of untapped customers that will possibly put Omega first. I say this was a brilliant move. Time will tell if demand for Omegas increases

    Great vid. I'd say Swatch just gave the orders to a reluctant Omega, they would never have authorised this if independant - too much downside risk to justify any upside long term. It's a double edge sword that will cheapen the brand but will bring potential customers in the market.
    What I'll be looking at is how available the new omega releases will be (aqua terras and chrono's). Currently you need to register interest and they're not limited edition so this may be a sign of going the "rolex way".

    Tudor range of watches has got a little bit boring . It’s black bay line is to big and the brand needs more variety. Maybe bring back the grand tour line , a new ranger etc . And not bang snowflake hands on everything. Omega is on a different level to Tudor . The moonswatch is great for the swatch brand but I’m not sure if it’s good for omega. At least if I buy a moonswatch I won’t be bothered if I scratch the crystal like I was when owned a 1861.

    I don't think they are letting Rolex off the hook, they will chase Rolex until they overtake. Luxury watches are typically sold to people aged 35+. The current buyers saw Rolex be seen as a power watch in the 80s and then they bought them.
    What Omega are doing is making young people want Omega and view Rolex as an Uncles watch. Omega know they can't catch Omega right now, but they are playing the long game.
    What could have been a disaster for Omega has turned out to be amazing as they could never have anticipated that so many young and new generation buyers would have expressed such interest.
    The way gen z work, the social media gen, once lots have this Swatch speedy they will want to go one up, the Omega version.
    A genius move and pretty much consolidated Omegas position will overtake Rolex within the next decade

    On Wednesday lot’s of watches are going to be released and 99% of us won’t be able to get one even if we have the money. It’s a stupid game of look at this but you can’t have one unless you buy one from one of the 1% who are able to get them for stupid money. It’s boring and most people aren’t interested anymore. In a time of high inflation and people having less money than they’ve had in along time this is a breath of fresh air and has given the watch industry something different to talk about than how to get a Rolex for retail. Some of the kids that buy this will want a actual Speedmaster in years to come.

    If these type of people and kids then fall in love with this style of watch, they might then go on to buy a real Speedmaster.

    It makes Omega less reliable (what more collaboration crap will they introduce?) and also from a pricing strategy point of view.

    Charge more for a BMW and it will not make it a Porsche. This is what Rolex is trying to do. Rolex is a mass produced run of the mill watch which has been swept up by the gullible on the back of decades of superlative marketing. To compare Rolex with brands such as Patek etc is frankly laughable as is the notion that a company making a £150k central tourbillon with one of the best heritage in watchmaking would try to “catch up” with Rolex. As for Tudor, they are parasitic and fees from the hyped kudos of its sister-brand which is in itself the most over hyped brand ever.
