@UnlovedJDM California is pretty strict with emissions testing. It's every 2 years to smog test your car. Gasoline vehicles before 1975 are exempt from smog testing, diesel cars before 1997 are exempt from smog testing.

My dad had this in '84. He sold it before I have the capability to memorize anything.
MOT doesn't exist in California. However smog testing and occasional general safety inspection by the DMV is still required.
