  • The Volkswagen ID Buzz takes a legendary concept - the VW microbus, and adapts it to a new high-tech and electric era. It is perhaps one of the most anticipated EVs in years and something VW hopes will propel it to better sales in the US. Currently the brand has just 2.5% of the market, despite parent VW Group being the second largest automaker in the world. Volkswagen wants to double its market share by 2030, as it leans deeper into EVs. It has its work cut out for it. Besides the VW brand’s low market share, EVs made up just 8% of US sales in 2022 and the segment perhaps closest to the ID Buzz - minivans - made up less than 2%. But it does have heritage on its side. The VW Type 2, better known as the Bus, microbus, hippie van, and a dozen other nicknames, was, along with the Type 1 or Beetle, perhaps one of the most iconic vehicles of the 1950s and 60s. But like the Beetle, the VW bus was later discontinued in the US.
CNBC went to Huntington Beach, California, to test drive the ID Buzz and see if this throwback can live up to its legendary heritage and position VW for a better future in America.

    An Open Letter to VW:
I want it to look more like the older bus types. That slanted windshield and protruding front bumper kills the fun for me. It looks like a minivan, not a bus. I want to hear that it has camping mode!!! Tesla gets it and thinking about experience centric details like this is part of their $850 billion market cap. I want fold flat back seats so we can put in a bed. I have some real nostalgia for the brand (our family had 2 VWs as a kid, a bus and a beetle), but this doesn't scratch it. My dad had an older VW bus with mattress in the back and bench seats in the front. It was pure freedom! 3 people could travel in style sacrifice nothing, play at the creek or beach, grill a meal using the back as a staging area, then take an afternoon nap on the bed in the back (we would leave between 5 and 6 to avoid traffic and "get the most from your day" so everyone was ready to relax by 2pm), hang out and look at the stars in some remote place, then be able to drive back late at night. No one was super exhausted and unsafe to drive (because of the nap). When it was parked at the house people would sometimes hang out in the bus and put on a radio and play board games or with indoor toys. Like a tree house on wheels. The only problem was we couldn't in the winter or peak summer because of the temperature (totally fixable with electric). The car also worked fine as a daily driver (unlike a camper/RV would), but gave us a decent taste of that life. You have the opportunity to do that here, please don't mess it up!
    Much Love,
    James
PS. If you take this product feedback, I think you will make something that will resonate with a large number of people. I'm not saying you are going to dethrone the F150, but even a small slice of it's market share could double VW's. There are a LOT of American families that want a bus experience, but just don't know it yet.

I'm not sure who this is made for. It doesn't look like the old one so it doesn't really invoke any nostalgia. It doesn't have any of the features of a modern camper van despite being the same inflated price. It doesn't have enough room for real utility like a regular Ford Transit or Sprinter. It looks like a minivan so rich luxury brand buyers won't pick it up. What exactly is the target market?
They should have just followed the example of the oldschool one. A cheap camper van to take advantage of the current vanlife trend with marketing throwing back to the good ol' days of hippies roaming the country in these things while being super eco-friendly. I feel like the market is hot for that right now.

I love VW, but it's too much of a minivan. Had they thrown retro elements in, such as the rounded headlights, likeness of the hubcaps, likeness of the sideview mirrors, then it would sell like crazy. Plus it needs to be a plug in hybrid!!!! I love this bus and would have wanted it to succeed badly.
But Jesus Hewlett Packard Christ $60k USD base price??? No one is spending that.
How about Volkswagen stops trying to create such a differentiation between the North American and European market. Why would we necessarily get a more up-scale interior (that we'd be paying for) and a longer wheelbase (that we'd also be paying for) as a base? I'm a Canadian, and our family has 2 gas-powered compacts hauling our 2 kids with no problem (2014 Jetta & 2014 Mazda3). A 2-row bus would suit our family's situation perfectly. A $60k USD bus (...$81k CAD?) would absolutely not.
Still waiting on these cheap EVs that keep remaining on the horizon. Volkswagen keeps thinking North Americans ONLY buy really large, really expensive luxury items.

It’s not large enough to be a bus… but not wide enough to be a van… hence it’s a Minivan. Just because you want to pretend that the label you put on it will keep it out of the stereotype leaning of minivans does a difference not make.
I am a father. I have a girlfriend and a grandfather I car for. No new vehicle in the market is capable of providing me a one size solution for family transport.
This would have… if not for the price point.
