In this video I discuss whether you should use a ATX power supply for your mining rig or use a server psu for your miner. I also discuss why power supply efficiency is so important and why I am a huge advocate of platinum+ power supplies being worth it. I also go over a pico psu which basically allows you to run a gpu rig entirely off of a server hp delta ibm style power supply as the PicoPSU allows you to power the motherboard and a few accessories such as pcie risers with it.

I wouldn't buy from parallel miner. These breakout boards are not stable. They were selling for 49.00 for the last two years and all of a sudden the price increase because people think they are getting a good deal. This guy is just getting referral links on this, and hes only used the power supply for a month and now hes putting reviews online? Are you serious that you would want to run three l3+ on one power supply. This reviewer saying this means he knows nothing about power or how the supply works.
Its pretty clear Tails is the brains behind all mining and video operations. Props to her for training her people so well.
Tails recently received another promotion to CTO Chief Treat Officer
I'm a cat person, but damn that dog is cute.
Server PSU just makes sense if your going to run 24/7 that's my plan. Great video as always..
Agreed, thank you my friend :D
I could get 5 of these Delta PSU a couple days before it run out of stock! I'm using one now... Others are spared for future usage with more cards.
I have a server PSU bought from Parallel miner also, and I actually had to use their customer service. They fixed me up and it was a quick turn around, everything has been great. No doubt I will use them again, I figure most people don't have to use their customer service. Which is mainly why I wanted to post to say it checks out. :) My cables provided were 6 to 6+2 pins.
that's awesome appreciate the input! From what I've seen they have been quick to offer customers full refunds when they are not happy. They seem to have some of the best prices/products/ and service
hope you're well my old friend
ordered some L3 and D3 PSU through your link, not sure it worked though, i told PM on the order form. Keep up the good work.
Nice work done bro! very useful video. Thanks for sharing it. Keep it up man!
I was wondering to know is it possible to have 2 x HP PSU server 1200w for a rig with 8 x RX580 without having a ATX power supply?
Hey Vosk
Another ripper video!
To all out there, what is the deal with a power on/off switch for these guys?
What is the best option or do you just resort to the power point switch for control? Very curious on this one.
I guess you also have to install a reset switch cable on the motherboard for any required restarts?
Is this correct?
Any advice on this one would be great. Cheers to all!
I do a combination of this, rather than using the PICO-psu, just bought a cheap 450w EVGA BT(Similar prices from what I've seen) purely for mobo, and server PSU purely for GPUs and Risers. I do agree it's more wires and space but purely from a price standpoint ATX PSU is cheaper and for people like me simpler to use.
i am thinking about same thing...
but can 1200W server PSU handle 6x 1080ti + risers ?
What you use for join 2 PSU? is that use cable Dual PSU 24 pin adapter cable combine with Add2psu adapter?i just thing it be nice if both PSu can turn on and off at the same time. Thanks
akirezeusik I got 1000w hp psu/ 3x1080ti for maximum
How would you power your risers if using a server PSU?
Great explanation! Thanks! I bought a 1950 watt setup from Parallel Miner, platinum level, a 1200 and 750 combo. Looking to be able to expand.
How loud is the server PSU noise for home users, I am planning to put it in my living room.
Bits be tripping, got a 2400w gpu server psu for 90 usd and 30 did shipping from Ali, he has a link to buy in a older video, but in his video he is going to put it in the discription
I'll check it out! That's the same price I paid for this 2400 www.parallelminer.com/product/power-supply-kit-for-2-antminer-d3-dash-miners-94-platinum-high-efficiency-200-240v/?wpam_id=27 -- it was 10 or 20 bucks off iirc and obviously. . .was in stock then xD lol these D3s are wiping out so many server PSUs was it with a breakout board I'm assuming?
Sam G ya, the entertainment department in his"late night show" could you some help, but the info and chat is there!
Hi,
Nice work on your videos, this power supply is better than the platinum one?
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 T2 220-T2-0750-X1 80+ TITANIUM 750W Fully Modular EVGA ECO Mode Includes FREE Power On Self Tester Power
Can you help me find this? I've been searching for an hour but found a Chinese branded ATX @ 2400W
Cannot find it on ali, did you have a link to it?
are your server PSUs loud when they run? i have seen some vids and they sounds like a hair dryer
I'm going to comment on this as it was one of the main things missing from the video. Look for it.
That's only reason I watched is too
If you don't care about the noise server PSU are tremendously better than standard ATX PSUs!
@VoskCoin or anyone really... these breakout boards... theoretically when they are plugged into the server PSU, and the server PSU receives power... shouldn't the breakout board show the Watt LED #? Also shouldn't it also have a green LED and yellow LED on the breakout board once the server PSU is powered/plugged in? I'm really irked because I think I either got a bad "new" 1400w PSU and/or a bad breakout board. Even the 4 pin molex is chipped. Feeling powerless. No pun intended 🤦♂️ I should also mention the PSU (PS-2142-L) does not power on the light on the back and only a small internal fan running at 1-10 watts turns on.
Great channel. Great doge. Great info. Great girlfriend. Great presentation. Congratulations Vosk. Wishing you maximum block rewards.
what server psu can you suggest that is very silent?
also running the server psu at 50% load. is it silent?
I CAN NOT find any 6 pin PCIe to 8 pin female adapters so I can use my many existing PCIe cords. Any suggestions on where I can get those or other ideas so I can avoid duplicating all of those cords? Thanks!!
How do you get the 2 server PSUs to start at the same time? I want to use 2 HP 1200 watts and no ATX powersupply, just a Pico PSU. Running off a 240 Volt PDU with c13 and c19 outlets. I'd love some information on this if you have an answer and a moment. Cheers!
hello buddy
for example I have 8 rtx 3060ti cards and I have 1 powersupply corsair 1000watt and PSU SERVER HP 1200watt, now I want to connect corsair with motherboard sata molex pcu etc, now can I share 2 or 3 GPUs with corsair 1000watt and others with PSU SERVER HP 1200watt can I just make the combination ????
thnx for all
You come a long way Mr Vosk :).
Hey bro, your link for the 750W x 2 platinum server PSU is broken, its throwing a 404 error. It gets you too the Parallel miner site but not to the product page.
I'm planning to use a 1200W server PSU from ParallelMiner. I am using GTX-1070 and also powered riser. How do you power the GPU from the breakout board? Should the seerver PSU be connected directly to the riser? or to the GPU? should the GPU and the riser both be powered?
Thanks for a great video. One question: how are you powering your risers when using the server psus + pico psu? I tried using some 6 pin connections off the breakout boards directly to the risers, but it caused the gpu fans to spin up and go nuts. Maybe it was just my setup being wonky. Are you using the breakout boards for both gpus and risers?
Excellent video as always. Thanks!
Thanks my friend :D
Thinking about starting up mining. Can you tell what Rig would be a great starter? One that i could make a nice turn around rate. Is the one in your first video a good one?
are you looking to build your own or buy one?
Please make a build log, would be awesome to see. Great video as always.
a build log on what exactly? Definitely can though and thank you!
On the the open air chassis behind you maybe, if that's the one you intend to build on. Also regarding that small breakout connection to run Mobo and other things off of server psu, I saw on parallelminer in the discussion section of that product where someone asked if you can just hook up the PCI 12V connection to the motherboard and Joseph G replied with the following "It’s great idea but we would need to make a special cable as PCIe 6pin have reverse polarity. Definitely would take load off the pico board. We will make some test." So as far as I understand one cannot simply use a splitter to power the 12V EPS connection from PCIe.
I will look into this and get back to you asap because I need to know this for my build too xD I was worried about the polarity issue
I love mining and cool info peddling bros like vosk #Love
How do you turn this thing on? When i plug it in i get a yellow light on the right side. I switched both of the breakout boards to make sure it wasn't the breakout board and still the same thing. I was told that you know its on if you see a green light, and i dont. None of the numbers on either of the breakout boards are showing.
How's the noise on the ATX supplies like that EVGA you have there? I've got an Antminer S7 I want to run in my apartment but it's just way too loud, especially the HP server PSU I got with it. I'm building a noise isolation box for the miner, but I gotta find a quieter PSU for it. Any advice?
Do i need both for a 7 gpu rig? 750 w and 2400w? or can i do it with just 2400w?
@Voskcoin...Finally got my hands on two Delta 2400s...problem is they didn't come with AC power cords. What type of cord can I use that will still work in a normal wall receptacle that is a 20AMP?? If you know please send me a link
Hey Vosk- keep up the videos I really enjoy watching and learning from them.
Any way you can add in links to all the hardware you are using? I know you linked the PSU but it would be great to link the connector cables and everything else someone would need to get up and running.
Thanks again.
thanks brother really appreciate that!
PicoPSU ATX Mobo Adapter (shown in video) goo.gl/BDbcGD
ATX Mobo Adapter 180 Watt a bit more power goo.gl/5G6pHU -- added more links, this 160 watt is the exact atx adapter shown in the video
excellent! thanks again!
Video on evga site done by one of their reps says you can run both power connectors on video card with ONE cable. Right from the mouth of their tech.
you can actualy use just the server power supply without the pico atx
Dear Tails (The Brains): You know your dad talks about fan noise all the time, especially with the ASIC Miners. He also mentions running things at a lower threshold to extend the life of the item. You needed to write a script for him as he left out an extremely important comparison .... the noise of each type of power supply unit (PSU). Since many are wondering about the noise or most didn't think to ask ... I'll fill in the experience from my builds. EVGA and other high end power supply companies make very quiet PSU's. You should never run a PSU at 100% since this will cause a shorter life for the PSU and is also less power efficient . 50% is the best for power efficiency ... but 85% is the most bang for your watts. The HP PSU's are extremely noisy when they become hot. In a cold location you can run them in the higher percents ... but in a warm surrounding those fans are very noisy for home use ... unless they are not in the living spaces (think garage, outside shed, basement (must have A/C)). Another thing to consider is the actual wattage output. If you look at the specs on the HP 1200 Watt Platinum PSU (Model 656364-B21) you only get 900 watts for 120V vs the full 1200 watts over 200V - very important information (don't want a system destroyed). The 750 Watt does give 750 watts at 120V. The HP power supplies will need cleaning more often since they are so compact in size and any dust starts restricting air flow ... and then you get the loud fan noise (higher rpm) sooner. I hope this helps you Tails .. just want to keep the channel growing. If you made it this far in the post please click the like button and post an idea, disagreement, more material, etc. Keep the videos coming Tails - The world appreciates you!
and I heard that Mobo use different voltage that might need to use another atx power to just power up mobo and cpu.
is that true or just the adopter you mentioned above will automatically work ?
Can you also use the 1600 watt antminer power supplies used for the S9s? They only cost 150 or so bucks.
What do you think is the best route for running (12) 1080ti rig?
Thank you, great help! However a question. In case of a service outage, it seems I cannot have my rig restart automatically! I need to physically press the button on the breakout board. Any way around it?
Hey Vosk and All, Will a 1400w Para Miner PSU drive a motherboard and GPUs? (Just received 2)
I have the 160w Picos and the damn thing is only capable of driving the motherboard and rig fans only?
It just shorts as soon as a HDD or GPU is plugged into it? I am attempting to as you said all drive off the one PSU.
What the best option? A 250w pico?
Anybody? Cheers
Do the Server PSUs come with required power cables? It's something I couldn't tell from their site, and I noticed they sell power cables on their site.
Hey where did you find the adapter cable for cpu ,24 pin atx, sata. LINK please and what is it called?
Hey Vosk, What are the two springy copper bands that are on both top and bottom of the HP PSU? Are they like a chassis ground? Is it okay if they contact metal on your rig?
they are transformers. the most expensive part. they do not need to touch anything
I was going to order the server PSU from Parallel Miner with your link, but that's only for 240v eh?
Could you link me to the exact PSU (Parallel Miner) I would need for a regular 110v wall outlet to power 3x D3's?
Thanks.
Do you bridge two server PSUs the say way you bridge two ATX PSUs?
so how do you power up risers? Is there any adopters for that too?
good video that link is now dead to the PSU what are you recommending now ?
Thanks
thank you :D
Where did you find the double power supply cord?
Amazon
I just bought a PSU from the site you gave me and It won't turn on. I have plugged in 3 different power cables but no change. Is the PSU supposed to turn on automatically?
Your dog is awesome!
dude thank you for this, just found it
Hi,
The Evga 750 t2 Titanium works better?
Yes it does one step above Platinum
The biggest difference here is the Server PSU's require 220V connections to put out that wattage where the EVGA and generic computer PSU's put out their rated wattage with 110V connections.
Generally correct but not always. If you go to parallelminer.com they have allot of server psu that work off of 110V
They mostly all work off 110V however you will only get 900W max output with 110V input. You have to have a 220V input to be able to get 1200W output.
Not all server PSUs are 220v. HP power supplies for the 360 and 380 series servers use dual 750 watt units. Plus you can power a 220v supply and get between 55-65% of the max power rating. Just look at the data plate on any HP power supply over 1000 watt rating. It will show power out at all current worldwide supply voltages.
Link to these power supplies? Every HP PSU i've come across to use for mining are all 1200W at 220-240V and 900W at 110V. I'm stating that you can use HP server PSU's however unless you have a 220V outlet setup you will not get the full 1200W or so out of the unit. Parallel does have PSU's that work off 110V however you will only get 900W out of them if they are rated at 1200W.
hi is server psu loud correct? how many rpm and decibels? thanks
Is there a list of everything in this video somewhere?
Is there a way to get the server power supplies to turn on with the motherboard power switch or does the server power supply only turn the system on when you either plug it in or press the power button on the breakout board?
Nevermind found my answer, the new breakout boards by S-Union have a 4-pin connection allowing a modular PSU to trigger the server PSU to turn on.
The pico psu is rated at 160 watts, what does this wattage include? The motherboard + cpu + sdd + ram? Graphics card ? What about keyboard and mouse ? Thats a lot more than 160w ? Also, What voltage should my pico psu be? Theres 12v and theres 16-24v too. Thanks for the video, im trying to make a rig work completely with server psu
Hey John, Did you get a response from anyone anywhere?
Sean
Sean Darcy it should include everything that ur computer will have, except for the monitor which will be powered separately. (If the monitor is usb powered then it will include that too) the graphics cards can be excluded as they will be powered by the server psu. Also this pico psu shown in the video is useless and very cheaply made. I found an amazing custom pico psu maker, ships cheap and worldwide and costs just around 50 dollars average. Here: smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/more-g-unique-bto-psus-are-now-available-direct-order.1983/ .you will need to email the guy with your requirements, its the best pico psu i found. U dont really need a pico psu tho if u can buy a good quality atx power supply. I ended up buying a corsair hx750i. Will combine this with server psus later in the future. For now i have a pc with 1x rx550 4gb oc that im using for personal use only, i cant find any good gpu is stock at normal prices. Its just not worth it to make a mining rig anymore, unless ur willing to go really deep and spend a lot of money into it, then waiting for your investment to pay off, while hoping mining with gpu is still profitable by the time u start making the profit. I recommend a lot of rx550 with monero if u still wanna do it.

Cheers JD, Are you aware if it is a must to split parallel miners pcie cable to the GPUs?
Is the 12v and wattage from a single cable too much. From all setups I have seen document it does not appear so...
PSU is currently causing issues to GPU and risers.
I was only attempting to test power from the 1400w parallel miner breakout setup. Nothing else.
Use of Server PSU is very simplistic. That is understood. Using a PICO with motherboard to also power GPUs is a little misleading.
Separately 1, 2 and 3 GPUs all power on fine. Decide to plug 4 and 5 GPUs in then problems.
What a nightmare.
What you thoughts on a single pci-e from breakout board to the GPU and another to the riser?
Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers JD
can you comment on the noise of your server psus? are they very loud?
Are the boards included in the purchase?
@Voskcoin Do you always buy the same brand cards for your trio rigs? I've seen some manufacturers have different power requirements? Some 1080ti cards need 1x6pin 1x8pin... others are 2x8pin? What do you think?
Darren Carrington does not matter, I am telling you as a overclockrr
Sniper Pro nerf mods I was thinking from the view of PSU selection. Having different connectors on the card might effect what cables and adaptors you'll need from your psu
Darren Carrington look onr 6 pin easily and safely carry 300 watts, so no problem there, and just search up DIY 6 pin to 8 pin easy or just get a 6 to 8, server psi are WAY cheaper and more effeint,
Sniper Pro nerf mods how many 6pin cards would you run off 1 850watt psu? 5?
Sniper Pro nerf mods Also, could it be safe to use a splitter, 6pin into 2x 8pin? To run 2 gtx 1070?
Can you run these server PSUs on standard 120v US outlets? Or do I have to get an adapter?
Some of them can, some can't always double check the description, for example this 750w x2 (1500 watt) can goo.gl/3emSmi
Go go go
Hey!!! pls help!! can you combine an atx and server PSU??
what if i just wanna do Blender rendering?
Pci e can run 288 watts
Damn that server PSU is the size of a dog (1:13) :/ how am I supposed to fit a dog into my PC :/
lol it's not that big xD
i just wanna know is what breed is that cute lido doggy you got there?
ThatGuyKappa Shiba Inu
Cute doge
give me the motherboard cable link
PicoPSU ATX Mobo Adapter (shown in video) goo.gl/BDbcGD
ATX Mobo Adapter 180 Watt a bit more power goo.gl/5G6pHU here you go sir :D
Does the 6-pin to 8 pin (6+2) cable really give you the full power of a real 8 pin? There must be a reason PC PSUs actually have 8 pins coming out of the PSU.
10:13
2:16 haha
WARNING do not buy a SERVER PSU unless you have a 240v outlet, I'm down 200$ cus of this video.
