    In this video I discuss whether you should use a ATX power supply for your mining rig or use a server psu for your miner. I also discuss why power supply efficiency is so important and why I am a huge advocate of platinum+ power supplies being worth it. I also go over a pico psu which basically allows you to run a gpu rig entirely off of a server hp delta ibm style power supply as the PicoPSU allows you to power the motherboard and a few accessories such as pcie risers with it.

      I wouldn't buy from parallel miner. These breakout boards are not stable. They were selling for 49.00 for the last two years and all of a sudden the price increase because people think they are getting a good deal. This guy is just getting referral links on this, and hes only used the power supply for a month and now hes putting reviews online? Are you serious that you would want to run three l3+ on one power supply. This reviewer saying this means he knows nothing about power or how the supply works.

    I have a server PSU bought from Parallel miner also, and I actually had to use their customer service. They fixed me up and it was a quick turn around, everything has been great. No doubt I will use them again, I figure most people don't have to use their customer service. Which is mainly why I wanted to post to say it checks out. :) My cables provided were 6 to 6+2 pins.

    Hey Vosk
    Another ripper video!
    To all out there, what is the deal with a power on/off switch for these guys?
    What is the best option or do you just resort to the power point switch for control? Very curious on this one.
    I guess you also have to install a reset switch cable on the motherboard for any required restarts?
    Is this correct?
    Any advice on this one would be great. Cheers to all!

    I do a combination of this, rather than using the PICO-psu, just bought a cheap 450w EVGA BT(Similar prices from what I've seen) purely for mobo, and server PSU purely for GPUs and Risers. I do agree it's more wires and space but purely from a price standpoint ATX PSU is cheaper and for people like me simpler to use.

    @VoskCoin or anyone really... these breakout boards... theoretically when they are plugged into the server PSU, and the server PSU receives power... shouldn't the breakout board show the Watt LED #? Also shouldn't it also have a green LED and yellow LED on the breakout board once the server PSU is powered/plugged in? I'm really irked because I think I either got a bad "new" 1400w PSU and/or a bad breakout board. Even the 4 pin molex is chipped. Feeling powerless. No pun intended 🤦‍♂️ I should also mention the PSU (PS-2142-L) does not power on the light on the back and only a small internal fan running at 1-10 watts turns on.

    I'm planning to use a 1200W server PSU from ParallelMiner. I am using GTX-1070 and also powered riser. How do you power the GPU from the breakout board? Should the seerver PSU be connected directly to the riser? or to the GPU? should the GPU and the riser both be powered?

  • @Transmissions
    @Transmissions 6 лет назад

    Thanks for a great video. One question: how are you powering your risers when using the server psus + pico psu? I tried using some 6 pin connections off the breakout boards directly to the risers, but it caused the gpu fans to spin up and go nuts. Maybe it was just my setup being wonky. Are you using the breakout boards for both gpus and risers?

      On the the open air chassis behind you maybe, if that's the one you intend to build on. Also regarding that small breakout connection to run Mobo and other things off of server psu, I saw on parallelminer in the discussion section of that product where someone asked if you can just hook up the PCI 12V connection to the motherboard and Joseph G replied with the following "It’s great idea but we would need to make a special cable as PCIe 6pin have reverse polarity. Definitely would take load off the pico board. We will make some test." So as far as I understand one cannot simply use a splitter to power the 12V EPS connection from PCIe.

    Dear Tails (The Brains): You know your dad talks about fan noise all the time, especially with the ASIC Miners. He also mentions running things at a lower threshold to extend the life of the item. You needed to write a script for him as he left out an extremely important comparison .... the noise of each type of power supply unit (PSU). Since many are wondering about the noise or most didn't think to ask ... I'll fill in the experience from my builds. EVGA and other high end power supply companies make very quiet PSU's. You should never run a PSU at 100% since this will cause a shorter life for the PSU and is also less power efficient . 50% is the best for power efficiency ... but 85% is the most bang for your watts. The HP PSU's are extremely noisy when they become hot. In a cold location you can run them in the higher percents ... but in a warm surrounding those fans are very noisy for home use ... unless they are not in the living spaces (think garage, outside shed, basement (must have A/C)). Another thing to consider is the actual wattage output. If you look at the specs on the HP 1200 Watt Platinum PSU (Model 656364-B21) you only get 900 watts for 120V vs the full 1200 watts over 200V - very important information (don't want a system destroyed). The 750 Watt does give 750 watts at 120V. The HP power supplies will need cleaning more often since they are so compact in size and any dust starts restricting air flow ... and then you get the loud fan noise (higher rpm) sooner. I hope this helps you Tails .. just want to keep the channel growing. If you made it this far in the post please click the like button and post an idea, disagreement, more material, etc. Keep the videos coming Tails - The world appreciates you!

    The biggest difference here is the Server PSU's require 220V connections to put out that wattage where the EVGA and generic computer PSU's put out their rated wattage with 110V connections.

    • @jsmcrawler
      @jsmcrawler 6 лет назад +1

      Generally correct but not always. If you go to parallelminer.com they have allot of server psu that work off of 110V

    • @MrInfamos
      @MrInfamos 6 лет назад +2

      They mostly all work off 110V however you will only get 900W max output with 110V input. You have to have a 220V input to be able to get 1200W output.

    • @richardfaroni7268
      @richardfaroni7268 6 лет назад

      Not all server PSUs are 220v. HP power supplies for the 360 and 380 series servers use dual 750 watt units. Plus you can power a 220v supply and get between 55-65% of the max power rating. Just look at the data plate on any HP power supply over 1000 watt rating. It will show power out at all current worldwide supply voltages.

    • @MrInfamos
      @MrInfamos 6 лет назад

      Link to these power supplies? Every HP PSU i've come across to use for mining are all 1200W at 220-240V and 900W at 110V. I'm stating that you can use HP server PSU's however unless you have a 220V outlet setup you will not get the full 1200W or so out of the unit. Parallel does have PSU's that work off 110V however you will only get 900W out of them if they are rated at 1200W.

    Is there a way to get the server power supplies to turn on with the motherboard power switch or does the server power supply only turn the system on when you either plug it in or press the power button on the breakout board?

      Nevermind found my answer, the new breakout boards by S-Union have a 4-pin connection allowing a modular PSU to trigger the server PSU to turn on.

    The pico psu is rated at 160 watts, what does this wattage include? The motherboard + cpu + sdd + ram? Graphics card ? What about keyboard and mouse ? Thats a lot more than 160w ? Also, What voltage should my pico psu be? Theres 12v and theres 16-24v too. Thanks for the video, im trying to make a rig work completely with server psu

      Sean Darcy it should include everything that ur computer will have, except for the monitor which will be powered separately. (If the monitor is usb powered then it will include that too) the graphics cards can be excluded as they will be powered by the server psu. Also this pico psu shown in the video is useless and very cheaply made. I found an amazing custom pico psu maker, ships cheap and worldwide and costs just around 50 dollars average. Here: smallformfactor.net/forum/threads/more-g-unique-bto-psus-are-now-available-direct-order.1983/ .you will need to email the guy with your requirements, its the best pico psu i found. U dont really need a pico psu tho if u can buy a good quality atx power supply. I ended up buying a corsair hx750i. Will combine this with server psus later in the future. For now i have a pc with 1x rx550 4gb oc that im using for personal use only, i cant find any good gpu is stock at normal prices. Its just not worth it to make a mining rig anymore, unless ur willing to go really deep and spend a lot of money into it, then waiting for your investment to pay off, while hoping mining with gpu is still profitable by the time u start making the profit. I recommend a lot of rx550 with monero if u still wanna do it.

Or rx vega 56 with monero (impossible to find in stock at normal prices)

      Cheers JD, Are you aware if it is a must to split parallel miners pcie cable to the GPUs?
      Is the 12v and wattage from a single cable too much. From all setups I have seen document it does not appear so...
      PSU is currently causing issues to GPU and risers.
      I was only attempting to test power from the 1400w parallel miner breakout setup. Nothing else.
      Use of Server PSU is very simplistic. That is understood. Using a PICO with motherboard to also power GPUs is a little misleading.
      Separately 1, 2 and 3 GPUs all power on fine. Decide to plug 4 and 5 GPUs in then problems.
      What a nightmare.
      What you thoughts on a single pci-e from breakout board to the GPU and another to the riser?
      Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers JD

    @Voskcoin Do you always buy the same brand cards for your trio rigs? I've seen some manufacturers have different power requirements? Some 1080ti cards need 1x6pin 1x8pin... others are 2x8pin? What do you think?

      Sniper Pro nerf mods I was thinking from the view of PSU selection. Having different connectors on the card might effect what cables and adaptors you'll need from your psu

      Darren Carrington look onr 6 pin easily and safely carry 300 watts, so no problem there, and just search up DIY 6 pin to 8 pin easy or just get a 6 to 8, server psi are WAY cheaper and more effeint,

    Does the 6-pin to 8 pin (6+2) cable really give you the full power of a real 8 pin? There must be a reason PC PSUs actually have 8 pins coming out of the PSU.
