  • Rheumatoid arthritis may be triggered by autoimmune friendly fire against a urinary tract infection bacteria called Proteus mirabilis, which could help explain why sufferers randomized to a plant-based diet experience such remarkable benefit.

After I was diagnosed with severe crippling RA 14 years ago, I became a gluten-free vegan. And I do not have any severe deformity of my joints, no pain, no stiffness or achiness...I feel great. I wake up alert and ready to go through the day, I work hard, I exercise 3 times a week, I do yoga 4 times a week and I walk every day up to 3 miles. I am very active and enjoying my days, one day at a time. Every 3 months I go into the raw diet for a month (no cooked food) to cleanse and detoxify my body of all impurities from food...I then feel renewed again and even better than I did before I went raw. If anyone is diagnosed with RA, please try to go vegan for 2 to 3 weeks only and you will see the change it does to your body, believe me, you will never go back to eating what you ate before. Always remember...live food, live body!

Just take a B12 supplement. I did a 4 day fast and eat whole food vegan meals 4 to 5 times per week and am starting to see an improvement in my RA symptoms. Could be placebo but will know in a few months. There is a steep learning curve for vegetarian/vegan meal prep however one does it. The food tastes amazing, just don’t get sucked into eating vegan processed food all the time.

I went vegan because I was getting severe pain in my left hip ( I already had arthritis in my lower back). I was taking the max dose of Ibuprofen with the max dose of Paracetamol 4 times a day. Within 1 week of going vegan the pain in my hip had gone and I was off the medication. After 5 months of going vegan I feel great but still have some lesser pain in my lower back (it has been a long term condition). Anyone starting to get arthritis should seriously consider a vegan diet.

I have been barely able to walk for the past year, suffering from severe pain that runs from by hip to my knee. I decided to buy the Total Gym and within a week of using it, the pain is hardly noticeable( I was diagnosed with RA over ten years ago). I have been flirting with a vegan diet for several years now, but after watching this video, I am hoping to shift to an, exclusively, vegan diet.

But, when she eliminated the specific foods that her results revealed, her symptoms that didn't go away for three years subsided. We still get her blood tests every year to check her RH and is still diagnosed with RH, but she is symptom free without NSAID drugs at this time. What foods? Everyone is different. Who knows if a truly WISE and knowledgeable MD would provide the same 'cure' in this day and age. It is now our project to replenish somehow miraculously the various critters which occupy a healthy microbiome.
I say : food as medicine, sleep, stress addressing, social happiness, regular body movement (every couple of hours, just a five minute walk or so min.), and maybe an FMT??
For me the hard part is eating very clean without losing all kins of weight I do not want to say goodbye to. Also progressing disease : (

With your arthritis symptoms, it's a good idea to get evaluated. This video was on rheumatoid arthritis, but there are many different conditions that cause joint pain. Osteoarthritis, lupus, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and fibromyalgia all can cause joint pain. Hell, even autoimmune diseases of other body systems can sometimes cause joint pain (like Crohn's disease, which is in the digestive tract).

    Hi Dr. Greger,
I'm looking for what conventional doctors are calling a “miracle” for my 70y/o mother who suffers from advanced rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, peripheral neuropathy(non-diabetic, doctors don’t know what caused it, but she now needs a walker), possible gluten allergy, all kinds of food allergies (dating back to when she was a little girl), TIAs…and the list goes on.
For decades, she's been nothing more than a guinea pig to conventional doctors, who just treat the symptoms and NEVER attempt to address the cause (in my opinion leaky gut IS the root cause of all her ailments). Anyhow, she's now on prednisone, yet again as the latest RA med seems to no longer be masking the symptoms.
Unfortunately, she has Medicare/Medicaid, which has prevented her from seeing an ND in Rhode Island. I’ve managed to get her off dairy and red meat and am trying to move her to a full plant-based diet. However, she also as diverticulitis and bean allergies (along with a long list of other foods, possibly even nightshades), which makes it extremely difficult.
She's been in and out of the hospital and no longer has a primary as he has left the practice (not that I think he’d help anyway. Her Rheumatologist already told her he doesn’t know what else to do for her). I am aware of the Washington D.C. Med Center that PCRM is opening in November, but I fear that her health is beginning to spiral down rapidly because of the RA and continuous prednisone prescriptions (she is now suffering from daily, consistent, fever & chills from RA. Her joints are extremely swollen now. She’s having daily migraines, and is now on an antibiotic for her first ever UTI.). I truly do feel that her health could drastically improve, if not reverse, with a plant-based dietary regime and cleanse/detox to start.
I, however, am no expert and know that she needs to do that with the guidance of a certified medical professional, who needs to have a good understanding of ALL her allergies.
With that said, I am looking for some guidance as she needs help ASAP! Anything you can recommend... Doctors or PCRM.org type MDs in the New England area? What Blood test/panels should I request the doctor perform? Treatments? ANY other suggestions or resources would be truly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

@Living4Jesus4Ever all animal derived foods cause inflammation. And all oils do as well. Go with the vegan diet. Meat is not the same as it once was. Even plant foods. But plant foods don't have hormones and nitrates injected in them. In biblical times, meat was killed fresh and eaten on the farm. Now they are highly processed and sent to factories. With time everything has changed. Pollution, environment and how we live. The Bible says in the old testament that we can eat anything except Rabbits, Eagles, Crows, other flying birds. And I even read yesterday that we can eat certain insects like Crickets and Grasshoppers. Also all fish that have scales and fins. Anyway all this is in the Old testament. So it's not strict as long as it's not humans that we eat. My point is meat and fish is not healthy anymore. The oceans have been polluted so badly that it's not healthy to consume fish. Perhaps that is why places like Sardinia and Ikaria still have people living to 100 plus. Because they still farm most of their food. And eat mostly plant based. In the Western world we just go to the grocery store where food has been on a truck for days and sometimes in the store for many weeks before we even eat it. Which is why we waste so much food in America. And other developed countries. Check out The Blue Zones on RUclips. It's fascinating it talks about the countries that have the most of centenarians because they eat mostly plant based non processed foods. And grow it themselves. For example Okinawans eat mostly sweet potatoes, bitter melon (vegetable), tofu and other vegetables. Anyway I'm talking too much lol. WFPB is the best diet for the times we are living in. Don't let the Keto community fool you. It is very rare to hear about a vegan that eats WFPB to die from a heart attack. If they did it wasn't caused by their diet. Maybe drinking or smoking. Keto was made famous first by Dr. Atkins with the Atkins diet. Scientifically it makes you lose weight but the long term effects are dangerous and even fatal. Good luck!! Hope this helps. GOD bless you.

I have seen marked improvement with a plant based diet with NO added OIL ( including nuts and avos ) and gluten free. Not a doctor I just saw two men do this with success.

Elizabeth did you try cutting out oil? You can try water frying or cooking with vegetable stock. The food still taste delicious.

Please be aware that even though Dr. Greger unfortunately uses the terms “vegan” and “vegetarian” interchangeably, he DOES NOT recommend a vegetarian diet at all. What he recommends instead is a vegan diet. In other words, NO foods of animal origin: no cheese, no cow’s milk, no eggs, no cream, no butter, etc. There is a world of difference between healthy, plant-based vegan diets and vegetarian diets, which are full of unhealthy, saturated, animal fat.
