When I told my P.A. I was going plant based for 90 days, I got the eye roll 🙄. In 90 days, I took my A1c from 13 to 5.6. When I saw him he said “You did that in 90 days without any medication?” Yeah Baby.
As of 03/10/22, I’ve been eating a mostly wfpb lifestyle for a little over 2 years and have taken off 75 lbs.

Question: Plants are great except most grains (except like barley and buckwheat) spike glucose/insulin. Q1: were you eating the typical grain heavy vegan diet? Q2: were you eating less calories than maintenance? Thanks for your time.

@@Scottlp2 I was eating as much food as I wanted, mainly beans and vegetables, a little fruit and I had oatmeal for breakfast. I made my own peanut butter 💚 and veggie broth (from veggie scraps). I also did 16/8 intermittent fasting and a after a couple of weeks in I started exercising daily. The only real grains I had were oatmeal (almost daily) occasionally brown rice, and a (1) loaf of whole grain bread (which I devoured in a couple of hours - What can I say... I’m a bread lover 💚). I hope this helps.

@@johnnypenso9574 I've been vegan over 3 years. My good cholesterol is higher and triglycerides are low. When I was eating lots of coconut cream my bad cholesterol went up. It depends on what your nutrition is like and high intensity exercise is important for your heart and body as well. I don't do the really high carb really low fat stuff which could raise triglycerides or high fat with high sugar. Most of the time I get the bulk of my fats from tahini, chia seeds, peanut butter and tofu, I eat one to two serves of fruit a day and I'll typically choose berries and banana as my main fruit, I eat a serve of leafy greens most days, my other veggies are mainly sweet potato, broccoli, mushroom, sauerkraut and onion, I eat higher protein in general because I train and my high carb sources are typically oats, kidney beans and/or a Turkish pizza base. If I want more sweetness I use Stevia because it's no sugar, natural and tastes good. Never had triglyceride, blood sugar or nutrition problems eating this style. My inflammation markers are also low according to my latest blood test.

Your hair is fuller? In 29 days? That’s not how the hair cycle works actually. You wouldn’t see a difference in fullness for several months. I’m plant based and see what you’re TRYING to do but don’t give false sis.

    • @sunflower5858
      @sunflower5858 11 месяцев назад +14

@@juiicii1 Dr. Isabel, thanks for your response! My hair DEFINITELY got fuller, and my assumption is that my body was responding greatly to the nutrients I was getting. I went from intermittent fasting, to fully plant based, and noticed a difference in just a few weeks. I was extremely iron deficient and it took a toll on my hair. It was thin and frail, and going plant based changed the state of my hair drastically and it didn’t take long for me to see the changes. My hair grew in fully, and stopped breaking so easily. So while it’s real cute that you’re trying to discourage me and other people who are looking for hope and a way to better themselves and their health, your negativity won’t work. Because you “know” how the hair cycle works, doesn’t make you the official hair doctor of every human being on this earth. Take your discouragement somewhere else “sis”.
To everyone else - I’m still here on my journey, going on 7 months! I’m also enjoying a healthy pregnancy! You can do this!!!!!

Going plant based one of the best best decisions I have ever made. Once I learned that all foods have an energetic quality it changed my perspective. Imagine the emotions from factory farm animals - terror, sorrow, despair - when you eat this flesh you also ingest these fear hormones. You are eating terror and death. You are what you eat. Milk is a cupful of sorrow. Once I went plant based I began to feel so light. After meals I didn’t immediately feel like I needed a nap because I felt so bogged down. Energy through the roof, joint pain disappeared... I could go on and on.

I'm so glad you mentioned the knee pain and GERD. I was still in my 20s and experiencing the same. I had fallen a year prior really hard on my left knee and it was still bothering me. Few months into getting the hang of a whole food plant based diet, those symptoms were both gone. Absolutely mind blown. One day I just realized I hadn't felt those symptoms. My acne cleared up, my brain fog, headaches, I lost 20 lbs in less than 3 months, fatigue and sleepiness after eating went away, painful bloating gone, throat clearing gone, and I got my menstrual cycle for the first time after almost a year (shorter/lighter cycle and significantly less symptoms than before). So many wonderful changes. I feel so blessed, like I cheated the system and didn't have to take medications to feel better. I'm a nurse and I refused at the time to see a doctor about all my symptoms. I knew a prescription was waiting for me and I just knew that couldn't be the only way. We weren't designed to have such poor quality of life. I can't believe how horrible I felt in my 20s. That was not thriving. I went vegan for the animals after watching several documentaries and regret not doing it sooner for them. The whole food plant based diet followed thereafter upon realizing how much better I felt and how quickly the weight started melting off. I will never go back. So thankful for this community and the work that is done to provide everyone free access to evidence based information. Considering changing my current specialty in nursing to something in plant based nutrition because I find it so fascinating. Wishing everyone the best of success on their journey. So grateful 🙏🏽

So interesting that you say that. I only starting having GERD when I was 25 and I had it shortly before I was operated on (they removed my gallbladder) for my gallstones. I continued to have a lot of acid reflux and the only thing that stopped me from taking proton pump inhibitors and anti-acid meds on a regular basis was changing my diet. If you had told me I would switch to a plant based diet (baring in mind I'm allergic to soy) I would have laughed. So it's basically whole foods that I consume which is the best thing I ever did. I still eat fresh fish once or twice a week but I'm hoping to eliminate that soon and find an alternative to give me the same benefits. Been plant based (with fish) for 5 months and no regrets!

By all means if you felt better eating foods other than the vegetables you’ve been eating then eat those as long as you feel healthy. No need to make yourself feel sick eating a the vegetables you could be allergic to. The only reason I’ve been able to try and mostly stick with whole food plant based eating is that I followed Dr Barnard’s advice. I listed vegan foods I’d actually look forward to eating. Knowing I had all those foods I loved eating is what prevented me from thinking very much about the ones I wasn’t eating. Good luck to anyone just starting out!

I've been vegetarian for 27 years, but I've always had a weight problem. Then a year ago I went low-fat vegan thanks to Dr. Barnard's videos. I lost 15 pounds and my blood pressure returned to middle school levels. And all this happened without ANY exercise. The trick is to get the refined oils out of the diet--that's the real culprit. My goal this year is to add exercise.

Low fat/high carb was my diet for about 20 years. I didn't call myself a vegetarian but technically I was. I couldn't get to a healthy weight, osteoarthritis came on like gangbusters in my 50s, various other health issues. Going meat heavy/low carb was a godsend. Arthritic pain down 75% to just nuisance levels, lost 35 lbs and down to highschool weight for the first time in 40 years. BP in the ideal range, HDL up, trigs down, inflammation markers back to normal. A literal miracle to me.

What? no! you dont need that! all that sugar wont help you! all those callories! just cut all your food intake in half! its that easy! i honestly got shut down...and did the cut in half( but within 2 months i ended up in te hospital with seazures- and i never had them before) turns out im pre-diabetes. my heart is not doing well and my pro-brain Natr. peptide was high of 186 ( range should be5-125),my cholesterol / HDL ratio was 5.6( indicator of high risk for coronary heart desease)
I am scared, but as soon as i came home i decided to go all plant( iknow its only been 3 weeks but im determined to live and so far lost 20 lbs. i could care less what he thinks...honestly maybe its time to change to someone who didnt "sleep in his classes" on nutrition lol

The problem with your doctor is not that he is wrong, it's that the food we eat is laden with drugs and chemicals, unfortunately it's the lesser of two evils. Plant based foods like pears and apples are laden with pesticides and meat carry traces of drugs used on the animal.

I make my own almond milk: soak 1 cup of almonds with hot water to cover for a few minutes, rub off the brown skin, put them into a magic bullet, add 2 cups of water, grind and strain the milk; keep the grits and add them to muffins and pancakes etc. You can add more water if you do like a thinner consistency milk.

I drink plenty of filtered water. After years of swollen feet, ankles and legs, the inflammation has completely disappeared, and I am comfortable and able to move more easily. I have also lost 30lbs by fasting, but have a long way to go. To me, a vegan diet has always been the only moral choice, health benefits are a bonus. The concept of living a compassion filled life is essential. I cannot imagine how I managed to justify eating eggs and dairy all these years by thinking that no animals were killed in the production of it, which clearly is not true. I love Dr. Barnard's philosophy. And, I am hoping that as I continue living this way, I will prevent the recurrence of Endometrial Cancer. I am having vaginal vault brachytherapy a few hours from now which goes against every grain of my being, If only I had been vegan from day one! The will to live and let live is motivation enough!

Approximately a year and a half ago I transitioned to a plant based diet. I have Hashimotos, and asthma. I suffered from constantly getting sick, constant increases in my medications and only feeling worse and worse. It took changing to another doctor who tested my Vitamin D and called me to tell me to immediately start taking Vitamin D. Turns out I was critically low, When I saw what a change one vitamin could do I started to look further. I was flabbergasted that no one tested me for this. Additionally, I have several benign tumor/nodules in my thyroid that protruded and we're visible on my throat. Current status, no longer suffer from depression or take any medications for it any longer, have not had an asthma attack since changing, no longer take any asthma medication, my thyroid medication is half what it was a year ago and dropping, the visible nodule/tumor on my throat has shrunk dramatically and is no longer visible, my cholesterol is that of a twenty something adult (I'm 49), my blood pressure is "remarkable for some one 'my age'" as my doctor says. Side effects; I've lost 22lbs, I have more energy than I did when I was in my 30's - and it's increasing, my mood is not only stable but I would say excellent! I'm also peri-menopausal and seem to have no real symptoms other than less cycles😁! So it is life changing. Also, it gets so much easier as time goes. I had a challenge in the beginning, stopped and had to restart. Side note, turns out I also had a gluten allergy I never knew about and now there's no longer brain fog and my mind is clearer than ever and the energy sky-rocketed both physically and mentally. My children are hard pressed to keep up now😆! So if you face challenges with health, depression, anxiety don't think about a change run for your life to make the change - literally!

Of course her care giver, one of my aunts, ran with that because that is what they ate. Now my grandmother has severe joint pains and other issues and yet my aunt can't see the correlation🤦🏾‍♀️. Neal makes a great point about when your doctor is not receptive to keep going for your medical treatment and seek your nutritional advice elsewhere. I'm four weeks in, and its important to say that i'm not just meat and dairy free (vegan) free, but i'm also process and junk food free too. You can be Vegan and destroy your own health because a high percentage of process foods can be still be on a Vegan Menu if you so wish. What I like about people like Fuhrman, McDougall. Esselstyn, Ornish is that their eating plans addresses that which is critical if you are eating for health.
Anyway, when I was a week in, I went to my doctor and told her what I was doing. She said "why restrict yourself like that, life is short!" Now..... she was saying this to a guy who had a heart attack + two stents at 45 and a triple heart bypass at 53. I was thinking in my head "like ya.....life might be too short for me alright and thats why I want to eat this way to optimize my stay on this planet as much as I can....so could you row in with me!!"
I knew I was wasting my time trying to convince her, so I said nothing to her. I had it in my head afterwards that I was going to change doctors....... but quickly realised that in my town nearly all the doctors are conditioned like that as well. So I did what Neal said and I kept her on for my medical needs and I got all my nutritional advice through videos and books from the above people that I mentioned.
I also managed to get in touch with a Plant Based Doctor in Ireland by the name of Dr. Sean Patrick Owens, but he is too far away to become a regular GP. But I'm delighted that he touched base with me after I reached out because he did offer me some great advice about dealing with doctors and medication questions and he pointed me in the right direction on my journey. I'm in a very good and confident place now with it all even after four weeks in and already I am reaping the benefits.
But it is not just with Doctors that there need to be some major changes with around diet..... there are even more issues with a lot of hospitals. In the hospital where I got my heart by-pass, there was a serious lack of veg and plant food in the meals and you had fried and process food options on the menu. They even had a candy vending machine on the ward and I seen people eating candy and crisps before going for serious heart surgery like myself and the nurses and doctors tolerating it!!! A guy in the bed next to me offered me some candy one night and he was dead himself the next day from a cardiac event. It was a real eye opener in there. And after my surgery, it took me nearly 3 months to see a hospital dietician and I had to navigate myself around the food equation myself in the meantime....which I may add was a minefield to say the least. But I have to give all those doctors and nurses a lot of credit too. For all my medical needs and for the surgery itself.....they were exceptional. Its a pity that they didn't have the nutrition side of it on the same par excellence.

I've been noticing that women such as yourself, who are vegan, look better than other women. Maybe it's the nutrients in the vegetables?
