Johnny Depps is so convincing I actually didn’t know he wasn’t English, I always thought as Willy Wonka he was putting on an American accent
His accent in "From Hell" was pretty bad, but usually he nails the English accent pretty well.
Johnny Depp, is not bad at Scottish, he’s all right.
He doesn't nail it, its not bad but im a brit and I've live all over the place n never heard anyone sound like that
I'm a Brit and his accent is bad.
yes yes yes I was floored when I heard him speaking to Veruca in a British accent
Where is David Tennant! In Dr Who he puts on an amazing English accent!
Peter Kilner He’s Scottish
Peter Kilner he’s British, but not English. There’s a difference
Being from the United Kingdom, does not make one English. It is made up of several different countries.
@@peterkilner3939 he's scottish lol
The_ Under_Xans ...Yes. I know this. But he’s still British, he’s just not English.
2:47 who's Hugh Jackson?
...oh dear.
WatchMojoUK Big oops
I was just gonna ask that. Seriously, WatchMojo?!
So I wasn't hallucinating
@@WatchMojoUK Yes, oh dear indeed. Thanks to his English father ? Jackman is Australian ! Almost every Australian can nail an English accent perfectly. You also missed Eric Bana (another Australian) while praising Scarlet Johansen. For my money Liev Schreiber has portrayed the finest Australian accent (far harder, probably the hardest as Hollywood & American TV almost always employ a Brit to copy an Aussie accent & they always fail) I've ever heard.
Yo, that butler from "The Nanny" was low-key one of the best. I can't believe he wasn't actually British.
Daniel Davis. Absolutely.
not only was it a good accent, the pure sass just oozed from him
Streep was so damn good she literally channeled Thatcher. Of course several of those who made your list have British parents (Guest and Myers for example) or have lived in Britain or been married to Brits (Paltrow, Jolie.) Robert Downey's British accent was also excellent in Chaplin and Restoration so he has literally worked on it for decades.
Most of these accents are either posh or London. If a non-brit can pull off regional one like Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield etc then I would rate them
That's what I was thinking too.If a non-brit could pull off a scouse or a brummie one, only then i'd be impressed.
Then check out Glenn Close in Mary Reilly. She gets the lower-class madam accent down pat.
I think the Sam accent from LOTR was rather good ,being west country and all that
Oh yh west country farmer accent is posh
Rosalind Parry West Country is close to American Appalachian and the islanders off of North Carolina.
Sean Astin is the best one on this list. It was only one that wasn't a posh southern accent 😂
I agree.
I've seen LotR probably 100s of times, and until this video I didn't realise he was even attempting an English accent. He just sounds American to me? 😂
At least some of the characters are meant to be posh though. Especially Cruella Deville.
James marsters has a great English accent and I find it so weird when he speaks in his native American one
Johnny depp is the best
Daniel Davis from The Nanny should've gotten a mention. He fooled people for YEARS that he wasn't from Texas. Also, if you count Welsh actors, Cary Elwes should've been on the list.
James Marsters I thought was British when I watched Buffy for the first time. He was very convincing.
He sounds strange with his normal accent
He's from Modesto.
Everyone thought he was British
@@djwalkerfemaledj I actually thought he was British at first. I was like wow he was convincing and when he said Anthony Head his costar helped him with perfecting the accent was just amazing.
I was so surprised when I learnt that James Masters wasn't British. And I was pleasantly surprised by John Lithgow's Chrurchill.
Meryl Streep did a good impression of Maggie Thatcher, not only the English accent but her voice sounded just like Maggie herself.
Tyrion's accent doesn't sound like any English accent I have ever heard. He sounds exactly like Victor Meldrew/Richard Wilson; who's Scottish. 😂
James Marsters was good, but Alexis Densiov who played Wesley in Buffy & Angel was brilliant. With Masters there were the occasional verbal tics that gave him away, Denisov I was really surprised he wasn't one of us.
I disagree entirely with Peter Dinklage, his accent was all over the place. He sounded like an American doing an impression of Victor Meldrew in GoT.
I just recently started re-watching GoT, and while I do love the job Nikolaj Coster-Waldau did playing Jaime - his "english" accent is EXTREMELY tinged with Scandinavian influence/accent, if you listen carefully...while the American actor playing another Lannister nailed it totally. I never noticed until last week when I started watching it again.
I love James Masters accent in Buffy
You've missed Joel Edgerton in The King. His Lancastrian accent is absolutely perfect. That's a region specific accent too so must be even harder.

Joel Edgerton - also Australian, but can't act. Should change his surname to Woodenface.
@@HelenGPitts that's a bit random
Meryl Streep for the win. Every accent she's done has been incredible. There are a few that I think you missed, but that's my opinion, of course. Alan Tudyk in A Knight's Tale and Death At A Funeral were pretty darned good. His voiceover work is extensive anyway. I know I'm ignoring the criteria but hey, I thought he rated a mention. I know I'm missing several folks to mention but his stands out to me.
I’m English, but I’m sure it must be far easier to do a “posh”, Downton Abbey type accent than a regular, modern day accent. Especially ones from Yorkshire or Somerset for example. Edit: Well, there you go, I wrote this comment before I got to Sean Astin on the list, he’s brilliant 👌
The mistake people make with Yorkshire and Somerset is forgetting that there are varieties of the accent even within those counties (Somerset is the most beautiful place in England btw), so when they attempt it, it's all over the place. That happens especially when English people attempt Scots accents, where they end up with some terrible mix of Glaswegian thug and Highland laird within the same sentence.
Posh accents are easier to do because most of us have never met anyone who legitimately is that, we've only ever heard actors. Met one ACTUAL posh person in my life (a Lord Lieutenant, if you please), and he was nothing like Downton posh sounding. He was utterly unintelligible, sounded like he was saying "Fnarr hyarr, narr harr farr..".
@@Sir_Gerald_Nosehairs. No posh accents. I'm from London and most people I know can do a Scottish accent
You should look up Chris Pratt nailing a basic British girl accent on the Graham Norton show. But mostly us Americans always try to do the posh accent that's often portrayed on TV.
Who do you think has the best accent?
Honestly, Brits do fantastic Yanks, but without fail I can always tell Americans playing Brits. No one does South African 🇿🇦accents well😒.
Robert downey jr
Alan Tudyk from Knights Tale
I definitely would've added Jordan Gavaris and Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black. Also, Heather Graham did a very good job with the English accent in From Hell.
Dialect coach here. Peter Dinklage is a great actor. But he does bot deserve to be on this list.
Emma stone? Really? I didn’t even notice the difference from her own accent
It still sounds like her but I can definitely hear the British accent and lack of American one.
Renée Zellweger should've #1. There isn't a person alive who didn't think she was British when they first saw her in Bridget Jones' Diary.
02:46 'Hugh Jackson'?
...Jackman's evil twin 😬
He meant Huge Accent
@@GodofMMA23 LOL
2:47 why does it sound like they pronounced his last name "Jackson"? X) X)
Eventing Hugh Jackman says is velvety and melting.
Downey was great as chaplin aswell in 1992
Amazing what about 10/20 video of actors who did not nail a English accent at all.
Jordan Gavaris from Orphan Black!
2:48 Who is Hugh Jackson?
I was shocked to learn that the actor playing Francis Poldark was American.
David Tennant?
just plain oblivious That’s what I said
The best British accent I've seen recently was by actor and comedian Lamorne Morris, playing Wilfred Wigans in "Bloodshot". I looked him up afterwards and was astounded to find he was American. Superb.
I watched this Johnny Depp, which was wow, but Sean Austin was brilliant and Meryl Streep definitely channeled Mrs Thatcher, awesome, thank you ✨ 🙏 😁
What about Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth?
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau did fantastic in Game of Thrones. Hard to believe he is not English
He has a natural British accent in real life. He didn't change his inflections much at all.
No Tessa Thompson? Her accent for valkarie is amazing.
Yeah it’s a bit weird how it’s not on here to be honest.
I thought she was British until a few weeks ago
I was genuinely surprised that she was American. It wasn't just the accent it was the attitude she got perfectly
Wait, John Lightgow is not british?
You called him Hugh Jackson x lol also I’ve always loved Glenn close Cruella and Mike Myers Austin powers, yeah baby yeah ! But I also love the Gyllenhall’s especially Jake he is the cuties and I love him very much 😊 x and I also love 💗 meryl Streep and Renee zellweger, bridget Jones diary 📔
Awesome thumbnail
Keanu Reeves - Bram Stokers' Dracula
and Don Chedle - Oceon's 11. Oh wait.
Johnny Depp is still the best 💕💕💕
An English accent not the English accent
Which one from what I know there are multiple
You guys sound like me critiquing so many of the non Southerners, lol! I find that more Brits and Irish do a better Deep South accent than the Yankees and the Westerners. They usually massacre our accent. Of course, like Britain, there are many variations of the accent, but it seems like the non Southerners use the Texan accent for the Deep South, and that's just offensive, lol!
I will NEVER be a fan of Renee Zellweger and her accent in Bridget Jones' Diary and I wonder how, if Gwyneth Paltrow is apparently so good in Shakespeare in Love, wtf happened in Emma. There, it was appalling.
That actress who plays the main girl who got possessed in The Conjuring 2 should have been mentioned! She nailed it flawlessly
You CANNOT BE SERIOUS with this list! Just watch Depp's performance in Mortdecai, or rather don't, it's soul-crushingly bad. His accent in that film is a major contribution to that film's utter failure.
Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator and Quills anyone?
Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury was spot on.
Where is Tenth doctor?
I'd also have to say Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones and Brad Dourif as Wormtongue in the Lord ot the Rings
Lithgow was phenomenal
John Lithgow's performance as Winston Churchill is almost tied to Gary Oldman's performance as Winston Churchill.
Excuse me? Dinklage’s performance as Tyrion is amazing, except the accent, which is subpar. Listen to the way he pronounces many of his “a” sounds - he has frequently used the short a on words that South East and posh English people use the long a for.
I always thought Spike was English, great bit of acting.
What about Brad Dourif
in the LOTR franchise? He fooled Christopher Lee and other members of the cast and crew.
I was honestly shook the first time I found out that Jimmy Marsters was an American
John Hillerman as Higgins.
‘British accent’ is a complete misnomer - there are SO many regional dialects that are all completely different to each other - what most Americans think of as a ‘British’ accent is usually just generic southern English, the lesser used ‘posh’ or Queens English and the London (Cockney) accent - The accents of Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, Liverpool, Sheffield etc. are all harder to imitate and as different to our ears as a New Jersey accent to a Texan accent for Americans
Completely agree, as an Englishman it pisses me off when foreigners can’t tell the different between English and British, it terms of accent or nationality.
What about Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody?
How about English Actors who can nail an American accent? (I would include Guy Pearce as he was born in England despite having grown up in Australia)
Hugh Laurie for definite.
@@kukalakana I was about to mention this. As well as Idris Elba.
That'd be a separate video, but Tom Holland is one that comes to mind. I was surprised when I found out he's not American.
I thought Spike was British for years until I heard him in an interview I was like oh damn.
He sounds Australian!
Got another one: Paul Giamatti in Ironclad. I honestly thought he was English when I first saw that film 😂
How is David Tennent or rami malek not even mentioned !
No Keanu Reeves?? I'm shocked!! (that's a joke)
we dont have just one english accent
Where are Alexis Denisof, and Jordan Gavaris? ...Also, in later seasons as their characters (they got better) James Marsters and Tatiana Maslany.
Elle Fanning in 'The Great' is quite good, as well.
Renee Zellweger was so good in BJD that everyone UK Only found out she is American (and from Texas) years later
12:02 Yeah, take Alexander for example.
He sings well too
Where is lily Collins??
What a Thumbnail to Pick 😅😅
Of course Johnny would be on Top 10. It couldn't be different.
It's an abomination to leave out David Tennant from this list.
Isn’t he UK citizens and not USA
@@jeb284 Yes, but he's not English.
@@yesiamthatgradeAcunt_ He's Scottish.
Timothee Chalamet should have got an honorable mentioned in this list. His English accent in The King was spot-on.
How abt make a video abt england actor/actress who nail american accent?
Ron pearlman should’ve been on this list for his (Russian) English accent in enemy at the gates
You missed David Anders, when he played Mr Sark in Alias, I genuinely thought he was english. Turns out he's from Oregon.
I like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and I love 101 DALMATIANS, GAME OF THRONES, and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE!
Man Up is a highly underrated romcom and I honestly thought Lake Bell was a Brit at first
The anglophones speak of imitating the accent as if it was something super difficult like speaking a new language, lmao
Daniel Davis, The Nanny.
2:48 Hugh Jackson?? 😜
Oscar Isaac in 2010's Robin Hood was pretty good too
2:33 Sudden Wolverine and Sabretooth. Don't let Deadpool anywhere near them.
I thought Rami or timothee would be on here
where was Cillian Murphy?.
Pounds is currency. Weight is stone.
What about Juliet landau? (dru in buffy)& I thought Jonny depp was good in corpse bride with his accent.I think John lithgow and Kelsey grammar have those accents where they almost sound English & James marster I thought was amazing! Had me fooled
ok hugh jackmans was so good tho
Cate Blanchett should be in the list.
Alan Richtison Does looks good With a Accent .in Reacher season two.
I'm Australian. Imitating the English accent isn't difficult. Must be hard for Americans having to tamp down the emphasis on the vowels.
I've heard one big give away of when a British person does an American accent or vice versa is how the r's and d's are pronounced.
Phillip Wincester
Great thumbnail ffs
RDJ did a horrendous English acsent and welsh in dolitle
English accent is one thing but a Welsh accent is completely different beast
